SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego student has been named among those killed when an international flight bound for Ukraine crashed in Iran.Sara Saadat was a student at Alliant International University in Scripps Ranch. She was a passenger on Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752, according to the school.In a statement to 10News, Saadat was visiting family in Iran and was heading back to San Diego to begin the spring 2020 semester. She was enrolled in the university's clinical psychology program."We extend our deepest sympathies to family and friends of Alliant Student Sara Saadat. Sara was a passenger on Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 that crashed in Iran. It appears that Sara was visiting family in Iran and was on her way back to San Diego to begin our spring 2020 term in our PsyD in Clinical Psychology program," the school's statement read. "The Alliant community is still processing the news and many of us are still in shock but overall it's grief and sympathy for the family and friends of [Saadat]," said Amber Eckert, vice president of student affairs. "[Saadat] was a student in our doctorate program in clinical psychology. It's a cohort based program that means [Saadat] will stay with the same group of students ... Very tight knit group of students, they develop life long friendships."The campus is providing on-site support from counselors from the school's student assistance program.Reyaan Shuaib, a close friend of Saadat's, told 10News she was "the sweetest person I'd ever known.""She had an amazing way to speak to people, to listen to people," said Shuaib, noting her natural talent for wanting to be a psychologist."She was the first person who got me to really open up. CNN reported among those killed on the flight were 82 Iranians, 63 Canadians, 11 Ukrainians, 10 Swedes, four Afghans, three Germans and three British nationals.The crash came hours after Iran launched a ballistic missile attack on Iraqi bases housing U.S. military. Chief Steward Andy Mills broke barriers in the military and is best known for his heroic actions during the Battle of Midway.His niece, Carolyn Coleman, says it's hard to pick just one word that describes her uncle."He was amazing, sweet, generous, kindhearted, amazing, loving, I could go on and on and on," said Coleman.Mills enlisted in the then-segregated U.S. Navy as a steward in 1934. At the time African American's were assigned the worst possible jobs and treated like second-class citizens.Despite that, Mills made his mark during the harrowing four-day battle when he was tasked with finding important documents on a sinking ship. Mills was the only one able to crack the safe.Mills would go on to become one of the Navy's first black chiefs."He was a hero," said Carolyn. "I'm going to miss him, I'm going to miss that man."Mills will receive military funeral honors next week. 968

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An eventual return to outdoor dining for some North Park restaurants may not be an option due to a City of San Diego project.Right now, some businesses on 30th Street have left their outdoor dining structures just as they were before the latest stay-at-home order. However, concerns have been raised as the city’s pipeline replacement project, which includes a bike lane expansion, moves into its final stages.In a virtual meeting, city officials presented a plan to the North Park Main Street Business board of directors, informing business owners of what will be required of them as part of this construction. This will include restriping the bike lanes in their section and putting signage up.Several area business owners, like David Gamboa, were not happy to hear the plans. Business owners believe the project will cost them their parklets and outdoor dining spaces.“Not only are businesses scratching for every penny they can right now. Now we’re going to ask them to take their staff, time, and take whatever little money they have and stripe the street themselves. It seems crazy to me. It’s a big ask,” Gamboa said.The business owners are asking the city to delay the striping of the bike lanes until businesses can fully reopen.Typically, the city would require businesses to hire an engineer who would design a traffic plan. 1363

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Alpine residents are bracing for a Public Safety Power Shutoff, as SDG&E monitors the weather conditions.The National Weather Service issued a High Wind Warning Thursday, "winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts to 60 mph. Local gusts to 75 mph possible near the mountain ridge tops." The warning lasts through Friday afternoon.Neighbors in Alpine are always ready if a fire sparks, “we keep a go bag of important documents and stuff and uh three dogs at this point and we’d be able to take them with us, and we had to do that in the past too." Neighbor Steve Allison said. He's lived in Alpine for 20 years."Well we’ve chosen to evacuate four times, the last time we had no choice, we had to go. The fire burned within 40 feet of the house," he said he was thankful firefighters saved his home last year during the West Fire.Since the West Fire swept through, in July of 2018, he's made some changes to his home, "we have defensible space around our house, we have new vents in our attic they’re supposed to keep the embers out of the attic."SDG&E reports areas of Alpine, Descanso and Pine Valley are in the dark Thursday and won't get power back until Saturday evening at 6 p.m, due to the Public Safety Power Shutoff. Neighbors like Allison are determined fire danger won't scare them off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An argument between two women turned violent when one stabbed the other with a box cutter Saturday afternoon in Mt. Hope, San Diego Police said.A 27-year-old woman was taken to the hospital, along with her 16-year-old brother. Her brother was also stabbed when he tried to intervene in the fight and defend his sister. Both are expected to recover from their injuries, police said.The suspect left the area, near 41st Street and Hilltop Drive, driving a white Toyota Solara with a tan roof, according to witnesses. She is described as 38 years old with a heavy build and an afro. Police are looking for the suspect, who goes by Bunny.Anyone with information is asked to contact the San Diego Police. 726
