Many Starbucks locations will close on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. local time to allow for employees to participate in racial-bias education. All Starbucks company-owned retail stores and corporate offices will be closed in the afternoon of Tuesday, May 29. Franchised locations are not participating in Tuesday's training. The training was announced last month after a store manager called police to forcibly remove two African-Americans for loitering. The incident drew criticism and calls for boycott against Starbucks.  "The company's founding values are based on humanity and inclusion," said executive chairman Howard Schultz, who joined Johnson and other senior Starbucks leaders in Philadelphia to meet with community leaders and Starbucks partners. "We will learn from our mistakes and reaffirm our commitment to creating a safe and welcoming environment for every customer."Starbucks has updated its store hours online. MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico's office for environmental protection says it has filed a criminal complaint against the organizers of the Score Baja 1000 off-road race for damaging protected desert areas. The office said Thursday that some participants in the Nov. 14-18 race departed from agreed-on routes and damaged cactuses and other desert plants in the Valle de los Cirios protected area. Inspectors found damaged choya, agave and cardon plants.Score International spokesman Juan Tintos Funcke says the Reno, Nevada-based company has not received any formal notification from Mexican authorities. Tintos Funcke's statement adds that "as soon as we do we will coordinate ourselves with them in order to attend to it."The race starts from Ensenada in Baja California state. 779

Lucy McBath never imagined she'd run for Congress. In a way, she wishes she didn’t feel she had to.  “I really wish that Jordan were here; I really wish that,” says McBath, who lost her teen son to violence. “I would have been watching him graduate from college and go on with his life.”Six years ago, McBath was working as a flight attendant, thinking about retirement, when her 17-year-old son Jordan was shot and killed.A man fired into the car he was sitting in with his friends at a gas station after an argument over loud music.McBath had only thought about gun laws, one time before her son’s death. It was when Trayvon Martin was shot and killed.“But upstairs, Jordan said to me, ‘Mom, that's not going to happen to me. Mom I’m going to be good.’”After Jordan’s death, McBath became a gun safety advocate, speaking with lawmakers and groups across the country. But it wasn't until the shooting at Parkland that she considered a life in public office.“And all I kept thinking is that these kids are standing up,” she says. “Why are they the ones that are having to fight for their lives?”With no experience or resources, the idea of running was scary. However, McBath said she turned to faith to move beyond her fear.“I believe if I’m in God's will and I’m doing what he's calling me to do, then I have to move beyond the fear.”McBath won the Democratic Primary, then the runoff. Now, she's facing incumbent Republican Karen Handel in a close race for the 6th Congressional District seat that's long been held by a Republican.McBath says her son is with her every step of the way. 1599

Mick Mulvaney, the director of the Office of Management and Budget, will become the acting White House chief of staff replacing John Kelly, President Donald Trump announced on Friday."I look forward to working with him in this new capacity as we continue to MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN! John will be staying until the end of the year. He is a GREAT PATRIOT and I want to personally thank him for his service!" Trump tweeted.Trump appointed Mulvaney to the position in an acting role about a week after Vice President Mike Pence's chief of staff Nick Ayers declined Trump's offer to become chief of staff, refusing to agree to a two-year time commitment the President had requested.Mulvaney will step down from his role as OMB director, a White House official said.Trump tapped Mulvaney for the position as one candidate after the next withdrew from consideration or agreed with the President to take themselves out of the running, including earlier this week Rep. Mark Meadows of North Carolina and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.Mulvaney had indicated that he was not inclined to take the position of White House chief of staff, with a source close to him instead indicating Mulvaney was interested in moving up to Treasury secretary or secretary of Commerce. 1282

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. — A new national poll from The New York Times and Siena College shows that Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden has a nine-point lead over President Donald Trump.According to the poll that was released Tuesday morning, Biden leads Trump 50% to 41% among likely voters. That's a slight increase from a month ago when Biden led Trump 49% to 41% among likely voters."When we look at the presidential race nationally — not battleground states and the Electoral College — it is clear that despite the first presidential debate, a presidential coronavirus diagnosis and hospitalization and many other events, little has changed in the dynamics of the race, Dr. Don Levy, the director of Siena College's Research Institute. "Biden has a nine-point lead, right at 50%, up from eight points last month. He continues to have a positive favorability rating, as Trump's continues to be negative."While comfortably ahead in national polls, the 2020 presidential race will be decided by a series of key battleground states. Trump won the 2016 election despite losing the popular vote to Hillary Clinton 46% to 48%.According to the poll, nearly one-third of voters have already cast their ballots. The poll found that 38% of Democrats have already voted, while 34% of independents cast their ballots, adding that only 20% of Republicans voted early."Nearly one-third of those likely to vote in the presidential election have already voted. Democrats and independents are much more likely than Republicans to have already voted at this point. Among the remainder of likely voters, half plan to vote in person on election day, one-quarter plan to vote in person before election day and one-quarter plan to vote by mail," Levy said."Among the 31 percent who have already voted, they support Biden by a huge 67-26 percent margin," Levy said. "The likely voters who have yet to vote, 68 percent, support Trump 48-43%."You can review the poll's findings here. This story was originally published by Paul Ross on WKBW in Buffalo, New York. 2047
