CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) — More than 220 teachers are out of jobs in the South Bay and a superintendent has been placed on leave. Jessica Davis has been teaching in the Sweetwater Union High School District for almost five years. She's just one of more than 220 layoffs in the district's effort to balance the budget that's been crippling for years."I really poured my heart and soul into my career," said Davis. "I was more than a little bit shocked that they went that high up on the seniority list," said Davis. "I don't know that she should continue in any capacity," said Davis. And a lot of them don't get a lot of credit for how amazing they are," said Davis. "What they have done to temporarily solve an issue that they created is not in the best interest of the students, teachers, and families in this community."The Sweetwater Education Association is hoping to negotiate with the board and get some of those teaching jobs back. 2225

CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Parents in the South Bay are upset about a marijuana dispensary operating near their children.The Eastlake Greens Collective is located in Venture Commerce Center. Hundreds of children are in and out of the business park every day attending dance classes, music lessons or martial arts classes."It's basically, just a, I don't know, like a music utopia," said Cierra Guerra.Guerra's daughter takes ballet at Neisha's Dance & Music Academy."The fact that they're operating a dispensary so close to this area is just kind of disheartening," said Guerra.Sara Fernando owns Migoto Judo Dojo. (KGTV) — Emergency crews Saturday were working to pull a submerged vehicle out of Otay Lakes.It's unclear how the vehicle became submerged and whether anyone was inside the vehicle. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Chula Vista’s Police Chief and a city councilman hosted a public safety meeting in a community where most would think safety isn’t an issue.  Chief Roxana Kennedy and Councilman John McCann met with several residents Wednesday night at the Montevalle Community Center.“I feel the balance is like this:  Housing, people, lights, traffic, less parking and police protection and presence are here,” said Chula Vista resident Dianne Farsetta while holding one hand up and one hand down. “It is a little scary.  We want to be in a safe environment.”Community groups on Facebook and Nextdoor appear to post more instances of crimes throughout the communities of Eastlake and Otay Ranch. Farsetta said the city is growing faster than its police force.However, Councilman McCann says the crime in his district is still less than half the crime level in other Chula Vista districts.  Additionally, McCann said Chula Vista is still one of the safest cities of its size in the country.  Nevertheless, McCann and Chief Kennedy listened to the community Wednesday night.“We want to make sure that we’re working with our police and our community to continue to make it as safe as it is,” he said.Farsetta and several others want to see more police on the streets and a police substation on the city’s eastern side.  Headquarters is on the western side of the city.McCann said the city’s immediate need is more officers on patrol.  He added he wants a substation but that the estimated million price tag is too much for Chula Vista. 1598
