SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Six San Diego inmates had to be treated with an overdose drug this month after deputies say they were showing signs of a fentanyl overdose. The San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) said the overdoses happened just after 4 p.m. on Dec. 4 at San Diego Central Jail. The six inmates were given various doses of the drug Naloxone to reverse the effects of their overdoses. All inmates regained alertness and were taken to a nearby hospital for care.Deputies searched the cells of the affected inmates and discovered pills possibly laced with fentanyl, according to SDSO.The department says it's taking several approaches to stop drugs from entering jails, including x-ray body scanners, screening of visitors who may be smuggling drugs into jails, and overdose awareness and contraband detection techniques.SDSO says that about 70% to 80% of people entering their custody are using drugs at the time of arrest or have committed a crime during drug use. 974

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo Global is stepping up efforts to protect the koala population as hundreds of massive wildfires scorch Australia. The organization said Wednesday it's committing resources to ensure the koala population is recovered. San Diego Zoo Global-backed researchers are preparing to journey to the Blue Mountains region of Australia to look for koalas and provide recovery assistance.Koala's in the Blue Mountain region of the country are the most genetically diverse koalas in the world, according to San Diego Zoo Global.RELATED: UCSD Health, San Diego Zoo Safari Park team up to save gorilla's eyesight"We have been working in this area for many years now, tracking koalas to learn about them and to assess their population numbers," said Kellie Leigh, researcher with San Diego Zoo Global. "The population of koalas in the Blue Mountains have high levels of genetic diversity. This makes this particular population very important for the survival of the species."Researchers utilize a special radio-tagging technique to track koalas in the tall trees and rugged terrain of the region. Thanks to that tracking, they were able to locate 12 koalas threatened by the wildfires and relocate them to Australia's Taronga Zoo.As researchers prepare to head back into the region, they say the devastation will require them to plan for immediate relief and long-term sustainability for the threatened population.RELATED: Here's how you can help the victims of the Australian wildfires"These fires are completely changing how wildlife management will be carried out in future in Australia," Leigh said. "In the short term, we will be engaging in search and rescue for wildlife that needs assistance, and putting in water sources for the wildlife that have been left behind. Our long-term goal will be to re-wild the koalas that were rescued and recover the population in the region."Across Australia, more than 120 wildfires have burned more than 15 million acres, killing at least 25 people and burning nearly 2,000 homes. One expert estimates the wildfires have killed more than 1 billion animals. "We know that Australian biodiversity has been going down over the last several decades, and it's probably fairly well known that Australia's got the world's highest rate of extinction for mammals. It's events like this that may well hasten the extinction process for a range of other species. So, it's a very sad time," Chris Dickman, a professor at the University of Sydney, says. "What we're seeing are the effects of climate change. Sometimes, it's said that Australia is the canary in the coal mine with the effects of climate change being seen here most severely and earliest … We're probably looking at what climate change may look like for other parts of the world in the first stages in Australia at the moment."RELATED: San Diego Zoo announces name of 19-day old rhino calfDickman adds that many of the animals who survive the wildfires by fleeing or going underground will return to their habitat without the resources needed to survive.San Diego Zoo Global has also started fund raising to support the recovery of koalas, platypuses, and other species. Information on how to support those efforts can be found here. 3250

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego State University said Tuesday it plans to pause a majority of in-person instruction for the fall term. The university noted that the changes will begin the week of Thanksgiving.“Faculty offering in-person courses are encouraged to shift to virtual, preferably by Friday, Nov. 20. All faculty should convert to virtual instruction no later than Wednesday, Nov. 25,” the university said. The university also said that no in-person research by freshman, sophomores, or volunteers will be allowed for the remainder of the fall semester. The changes come as San Diego County enters the state’s purple tier. Also this week, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced that a majority of the state's counties would enter the purple tier, suffocating economic activity. As of Tuesday afternoon, the county experienced more than 700 new coronavirus cases. 880

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Some San Diego fitness studios and hotels are getting creative by working together.F45 Training San Diego East Village and the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego are partnering to offer outdoor fitness classes this weekend.George Chmiel, the F45 studio owner, said that when they heard about the new public health orders to shut down more indoor spaces, they immediately looked for outdoor space.Meanwhile, the nearby Hard Rock Hotel San Diego has an 8,700 square foot rooftop terrace that's sitting empty. It's typically used for events and parties, but none are happening due to the pandemic. The hotel has allowed F45 to use the space without charge."Two industries that have been hurt by this current situation we're going through, are the hospitality and fitness industries," said Rana Kay, the director of communications at the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego. "We feel the pain at the gyms when they were recently shut down once again.""I think it's a great collaboration of businesses that have just gotten kicked in the face to find a unique way to weather the storm and potentially grow through this," Chmiel said.Chmiel says the plan is to hold one class on Saturdays and Sundays, and two classes on the weekdays.Kay says it could also benefit their guests. They hope people staying at the hotel will eventually take part in the classes as an option because fitness areas in the hotel are currently closed.Hapa Yoga & Fitness in Mission Valley says they have also turned to hotels since their indoor studio space closed. They are renting outdoor space at the nearby Marriott in Mission Valley. 1620
