EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- Three lanes of Interstate 8 closed Friday night after at least one person was killed in a fiery crash near State Route 67. Around 5:30 p.m. a man driving in the fast lane of I-8 lost control and swerved into the center divider before reaching the slow lane and hitting 1997 Wabash 53-foot trailer being towed by a 2013 Kenworth T660, according to California Highway Patrol. Witnesses reported that the Ford was cut off by an unidentified vehicle which merged from the eastbound #2 lane into the #1 (fast lane) lane directly into the Ford’s path of travel. The driver of the Ford made a turning movement to the left and impacted the concrete center divide wall. As a result, the Ford veered back across the eastbound traffic lanes and broadsided the trailer.As the crash happened, the Ford became lodged under the trailer and was dragged for several hundred feet. (KGTV) - A 4.1 magnitude earthquake shook the Lake Tahoe-area town of Truckee, California Thursday.The quake happened at 3:08 p.m. and was five kilometers north-northwest of Dollar Point in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.People in Sacramento also felt the shaking about 120 miles away, according to the U.S. Geological Survey map.There are no immediate reports of damage or injuries. 419

Doctors say a Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, according to a report Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. “Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case. The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes.Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhythm problem, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.The death was clearly an extreme case. The man had switched from red, fruit-flavored twists to the black licorice version of the candy a few weeks before his death last year. Dr. Anthony Fauci has a stark warning for Americans, reiterating that if our response to the coronavirus does not change, there could be more hospitalizations and deaths.“If things do not change, if they continue on the course we’re on, there’s gonna be a whole lot of pain in this country with regard to additional cases and hospitalizations, and deaths,” Fauci said in an interview Wednesday evening on “The News with Shepard Smith.”Dr. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has repeatedly told lawmakers and other news outlets the country’s coronavirus case numbers are going in the “wrong direction.”Cases are rising in almost every state and territory, and coronavirus-positive patients are overwhelming hospitals in some parts of the country.The Midwest is especially hard hit right now, with Wisconsin reporting a 7-day positivity rate of 28 percent.
