A Georgia family got a special holiday surprise last week after finding an owl hiding inside their Christmas tree. The discovery came last Thursday evening when Katie McBride Newman and her two children, India and Jack, were finishing dinner.India, 10, had started to clear the table and was in another room when Newman heard her exclaim, "Oh my gosh!""She comes very dramatically into the dining room and goes, 'Mama, that ornament scared me,'" Newman told CNN. "Then she bursts into tears."Newman said she's a big fan of owls, so the tree actually had about a dozen owl ornaments gracing its branches. At first, Newman said she thought India had just been spooked by one of those. So Newman checked it out, ready to calm her daughter's fears. But when she peered into the tree for the ornament, she saw the owl turn its head and look straight at her."And I'm like, 'Oh, that's a real owl,'" Newman said. Meanwhile, India had disappeared into the other room, in tears again.Owl may have been in their tree for over a weekThe family had purchased the tree from a store about two days after Thanksgiving, so at first they thought the owl must have flown in and taken refuge inside their tree, Newman's husband, Billy, told CNN.The family left their windows and doors open that night, hoping the bird would leave on its own -- but it didn't.The next day, they called the Chattahoochee Nature Center, a non-profit environmental center about an hour away from their home in Newnan. An employee there told them to leave the owl some raw chicken, concerned it may not have eaten in a few days. The employee stopped by Saturday morning. She caught the bird and identified it as an Eastern screech owl, common in the Georgia area, a spokesperson for the nature center, Jon Copsey, told CNN. She also checked for injuries and gave it some food and nutritional supplements. The owl was pretty thin, igniting the theory that the bird must have been inside the tree since they bought it, Billy Newman said.Returning the owl to the wildThe employee left the family some instructions: Leave the bird in a crate in a darkened room and release it after dark.At dusk on Saturday, the family left the open crate outside. By 9:30 p.m., the owl had disappeared.Copsey said the family did everything right in the situation -- closing it off from the rest of the house, trying to help it escape on its own and calling a wildlife rehabilitation professional.Katie Newman, though, says she swears she can still hear the owl at night, hooting away. 2531

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that the National Guard has been “activated” in New York, California and Washington state to help the three states hit hard by the COVID-19 crisis. Trump made the announcement during Sunday’s coronavirus task force briefing, adding that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be covering the cost. A FEMA official at the briefing said that both New York and Washington have already been approved for major disaster declarations to allow the federal government to more seamlessly provide supplies. California’s request is being considered. Trump also said that the Navy hospital ship Mercy will be dispatched to Los Angeles to help to help relieve the state’s overwhelmed hospitals. Non-coronavirus patients will be treated on board. A similar ship is being sent to New York City. The FEMA official said the projected need for hospital beds in California is five times greater than it is in Washington. A Birmingham, Alabama, police officer radioed for help, with the sound of gunfire in the background. His chief says it was a hoax and an attempt at "stolen valor."Officer Keith Buchanan was arrested Thursday after police said he faked a call for help and injuries while on duty last month. Birmingham Police said he was charged with false reporting, criminal mischief and discharging a firearm in city limits.Buchanan had already been relieved of duty, Police Chief Patrick Smith said, and every case he handled is now under review. The officer was patrolling a rural road near Tarrant about 1 a.m. July 21. He radioed in to report that he was making a traffic stop, 678

A group that raised more than million in a GoFundMe campaign has completed its own private border wall that the group claims to be on private land. We Build the Wall, the name of the group, was founded by a triple amputee Air Force veteran named Brian Kolfage. “I joined the Air Force in February 2001, right before 9-11,” Kolfage says. “And on the three-year anniversary, our base came under attack. A rocket landed right next to me and instantly blew off my legs, my right hand, and my thumb. I took a lot of damage to my body and that is basically what set my life and set the path of where I am today.” Donations to the online GoFundMe initiative to fund the private construction of the border wall between the United States and Mexico helped create the half mile stretch of steel bollard barrier in Sunland Park, New Mexico, near El Paso, Texas. According to Kolfage, the section of the wall cost an estimated .5 million. “We’ve been promised border security for the last 30 years,” Kolfage says. “I just felt like politicians are playing games, and I see both sides of the story. I know there’s an issue going on. Our politicians are holding both sides in the middle for their own personal gain, and I just felt like, maybe, I could have a difference.” Kolfage explained how him and his foundation were able to build the wall, which took about 20 days to construct. “It might be a 30-foot strip of land that the wall sits on,” Kolfage says. “We own it. We bought it from that land owner. It’s no different than putting up a fence on my yard. It’s your property, you can do what you want. As long as it’s within city ordinances, no one can tell you ‘no.’ It’s that easy. And that’s what people don’t realize, is how easy it is to get this done.”However, on June 11, We Build The Wall is facing some issues with the International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC). The IBWC issued the following statement: "A private organization, We Build the Wall, built a gate on federal land in Sunland Park, N.M., near El Paso, Texas, without authority, and then locked the gate closed on June 6, 2019. The private gate blocks a levee road owned by the U.S. Government. After repeated requests to unlock and open the private gate, the United States Section of the International Boundary and Water Commission (USIBWC), accompanied by two uniformed law enforcement officers from the Dona Ana County Sheriff's Office, removed the private lock, opened the gate, and locked the gate open pending further discussions with We Build the Wall. The gate was also opened so that USIBWC employees can conduct maintenance and operations at American Dam. The USIBWC did not authorize the construction of the private gate on federal property as announced on We Build the Wall's Twitter page. The USIBWC is not charged with securing other fences or gates as reported by We Build the Wall. The international border fences are not on USIBWC property. The USIBWC did not open any other gates in the El Paso area as erroneously reported. Other gates and the border fence are controlled by other federal agencies. An incomplete application permit from We Build the Wall was submitted to the USIBWC on Sunday, June 2. The USIBWC responded to the initial permit request on June 6 with questions and requests for additional information. The USIBWC has not yet received a response from the private organization regarding the Agency's initial response to their permit request. The USIBWC is concerned about the safety and security of our employees and the infrastructure at the American Dam, which is next to the privately-constructed gate. Despite USIBWC requests to locate the gate further from American Dam, the private gate was constructed in a way that may channel undocumented immigrants into the American Dam area. When the proper documentation is received for the permit, USIBWC will continue to process the permit application."According to Kolfage, We Build the Wall’s lawyers are handling the situation. “We are working with them to resolve the scheduling,” Kolfage texted E.W. Scripps national correspondent Tomas Hoppough. “They were speaking to people who they thought were with our group but they were not, and caused mass confusion. Our lawyers are handling it and it should be back under our control soon.”Hoppough texted Kolfage asking him if he built on federal land. “Yes, with their authorization,” Kolfage responds. “They helped us design the gate, they were involved every step. Fourteen members from IBWC approved the gate as designed. They asked for a 0,000 electronic gate but we said no and gave them a Jurassic park gate. Our lawyers have and still are working with them. We hope to have it resolved in a day.”Hoppough spoke with Kolfage in his home of Destin, Florida. “I’m sure you’ve had some backlash about building this wall,” Hoppough says. “What are some of those people saying about it?”“They’re saying it’s ineffective, they’re saying it’s not going to stop anyone," Kolfage replies. "They said the Cartel is just going to send them through a different route, which they’re right. It’s like a hose. If you have a leaky hose you can plug one hole, but it’s just going to leak somewhere else. With our wall, we’re going to have to plug in those holes trying to make an impact. But we’re enabling with our immigration system. Right now, it’s broken. We’re enabling these people to make a dangerous trip across the desert. The wall is a band-aid.”When asked what he thought the real solution is, Kolfage responds, "The Band-Aid is the first step. You have to stop the Cartels. You have to address the problem. If you don’t have border security the problem is just going to keep flowing.” Like those who oppose Kolfage’s idea planted along the southern border, he agrees that this is an issue that cannot be solved just by a wall. He believes that both countries need to work together for a better solution. “We’re not done though,” Kolfage says. “You’re going to see a lot more of what we’re doing in the next few weeks. We have other property owners that want to sell their land for us to build a wall. We have an order, whatever is the most vital area, that’s what goes next.” 6199

A day after David Ortiz was flown to Boston to recover from a gunshot wound, police in the Dominican Republic are working to find out why the legendary former Red Sox slugger was attacked in his native country.Ortiz, 43, was being treated Tuesday at Massachusetts General Hospital, two days after he and a friend were shot at a nightclub in Santo Domingo. The Red Sox, for whom the retired athlete starred for years as he endeared himself to fans across New England, sent a plane to collect him Monday after he had surgery in the Dominican Republic.Ortiz was shot in the back, and "the bullet went through his stomach," Felix Durán Mejia, a spokesman for the Dominican Republic National Police, told CNN.Before he was flown to the United States for further treatment, he was treated in his homeland for bleeding in his liver and had portions of his intestines and gallbladder removed, said Leo Lopez, his media assistant.Ortiz's condition was serious Monday, but he was stable enough to be flown to Massachusetts, said Sam Kennedy, the Red Sox president and CEO.One suspect is in custody, and investigators are looking for at least one other man in connection with Sunday night's shooting, police said. The reason for the shooting wasn't immediately clear. Ortiz, who was awake after surgery, does not know the man being held or why he was shot, and he's confident it was not a robbery attempt, Lopez said Monday.Dr. Jose Abel Gonzalez, who assisted in Ortiz's surgery in the Dominican Republic, said during a press conference Monday that the former ballplayer asked to see his family as soon as he opened his eyes."He finds himself in a good state of mind," Gonzalez said. The doctor also said that they hope Ortiz's recovery "will be the shortest possible," and that he expects Ortiz will return to life the "same as before" following recovery."On behalf of the Ortiz family, David Ortiz's work team, I want to thank the press but especially this medical team," said Ortiz's father, Leo.Video shows gunman open fireOrtiz and his friend Jhoel Lopez, a television host, were shot Sunday night at the Dial Bar and Lounge in the Dominican Republic's capital.Surveillance footage from the club shows an area of packed tables. Clubgoers are drinking, mingling and fiddling with their phones when a shooter approaches from the top of the screen, a short video clip shows.Only a shooter's legs are visible when a shot is fired and apparently hits a seated Ortiz in the back. Ortiz slumps to his left and falls out of his chair. Frightened bystanders knock over chairs as they flee.Ortiz's agent, Fernando Cuza, who has seen the video, confirmed to CNN that the man who falls from his chair is Ortiz.Jhoel Lopez was also shot, according to his wife, Liza Blanco. His condition was stable Monday, Blanco said, according to CNN affiliate Telesistema."They were both on their backs. It was very fast. He doesn't remember much because he was also in shock from the bullet wound," Blanco told reporters in Spanish. One suspect is in custody, and another is on the looseOne suspect is being held after bystanders captured him, and another man is on the loose, Dominican Republic authorities say.Eddy Vladimir Féliz García and the second man arrived at the Dial nightclub Sunday on a motorcycle before one of them eventually opened fire, police said. They tried to drive away after the shooting, but the motorcycle fell to the pavement, police said.A crowd attacked Féliz García and handed him over to police, while the second man fled, police said. The suspect was treated at Hospital Dr. Dario Contreras in Santo Domingo and is now in custody, police said.Féliz García has a 2017 drug charge and lives in Las Caobas, West Santo Domingo, police said.Santo Domingo's Ministry of Interior and Police announced a "provisional closing" of the Dial Bar and Lounge on Monday after the weekend shooting. The ministry's Control of Alcoholic Beverages program initiated the closure. The club has three days to give its account of what happened as police investigate the shooting, the ministry said. After a police officer's ID card was shared on social media implicating him in the crime, the Dominican Republic National Police denied any agents were involved."Our institution has no link to the event which occurred in the club Dial in the Venezuela Avenue, yesterday Sunday," the National Police said in a statement.Beloved in BostonOrtiz, also known as Big Papi, was reared in Santo Domingo and made his Major League Baseball debut in 1997.The first baseman and designated hitter played 20 seasons before retiring in 2016. While Ortiz's major league career began with the Minnesota Twins, he is best known for his 14 seasons in Boston as the Red Sox's designated hitter. 4756
