A newly proposed Ohio bill would make it punishable by law for physicians to medically aid transgender children through gender transition therapies. Two Ohio lawmakers have proposed charging physicians who do treat transgender children with a third-degree felony if they attempt therapeutic or surgical procedures to change the gender of anyone under the age of 18. It would also allow parents to sue those physicians. While the bill hasn't been formally filed yet, it's already caused concern among those who support transgender rights. "Without the medications, and the access to doctors and therapists and all this, I don't know where these children are going to turn or what they're going to do," said Jessica Cicchinelli, the mother of a transgender child. "And that, that scares me more than anything." Cicchinelli's child is one of 1,600 patients receiving treatment at Cincinnati Children's Hospital, in the Living with Change Clinic specifically designed to serve transgender children. Two doctors, a social worker and several members of nursing personnel work in the department currently. The conservative group Citizens for Community Values supports the bill and other legislation like it. Citizens for Community Values has not responded to a request for comment. Reps. Sedrick Denson and Bridgid Kelly responded, saying they do not support it. Five other state state lawmakers did not respond. Cicchinelli said the treatments her child receive are important, and help her child thrive. She's working to raise money to help fund the work that happens in the Living with Change Clinic."These lawmakers should not have the right to choose how we live our lives and the type of medication and that, you know, that we get," said Cicchinelli. A pilot was pulled from the Hudson River after a helicopter crashed in the water near where the Lincoln Tunnel comes into Manhattan, authorities said.The pilot was the only person aboard the helicopter and was rescued by the New York Police Department's Aviation and Harbor unit, according to a law enforcement official with knowledge of the rescue.The pilot is expected to be OK, the source added.Video of the crash, recorded by Ashton Byrd, shows the aircraft descending toward the water with its nose down and its rotors moving. A shooter injured 11 people early Sunday on Canal Street, on the edge of New Orleans' French Quarter, and a person has been detained though not charged, police said.Ten of the victims were transported to local medical centers, and one walked into a local hospital. A strong earthquake has struck the west coast of Indonesia Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey.The USGS said the 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck just after 8 a.m. ET. It said the epicenter was in the Sunda Strait, 65 miles from the city of Tugu Hilir in the province of Banten, on the island of Java.The shaking was felt in Indonesia's capital city of Jakarta, 240 miles from the epicenter, prompting people to run out of their homes. The earthquake lasted around 40 seconds.The Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency issued a small tsunami warning for four areas following the earthquake.The agency lifted the alert just after 10 a.m. ET after there was no change in the sea water level.The quake also caused some blackouts, plunging some of the affected areas into darkness.The Indonesian National Board for Disaster said it was working with local authorities to evacuate people living on the coastline. The board told people in the affected areas to evacuate to higher places.According to USGS data and the Indonesia Tsunami Early Warning System, there was no tsunami threat to other countries along the Indian Ocean. 1174
