SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - There is a memorial of candles, notes, and flowers along 4th Avenue near Main Street in Chula Vista.They are in memory of 23-year-old Christina Garcia, who was found dead at a nearby field on Aug. 5th. Chula Vista police say they were called out to 3100 block of Main Street after someone found her body. They say she had an apparent gunshot wound and opened a homicide case.“That afternoon, she wanted to see her daughter and pick up the truck, so it was a brief encounter,” her mother, Lisa Garcia, said. “I expected her to come back, and I wish I took advantage of that situation longer.”Lisa says Christina leaves behind a two-year-old daughter.“I think the saddest thing for me is that her daughter is only going to know her through pictures because she’s so young,” She said. “She’s never going to remember her mom’s touch, her kiss, her voice.”Lisa says her daughter was very likable and smart.“She tested out in the 10th grade and started southwestern college and finished her classes there,” Lisa said. She was also a skilled welder and liked working with her hands. Most recently, they bought a home and worked on remodeling it.“She’s very hands-on, like her mom,” Lisa said, “you know, taking the popcorn ceiling down, remodeling the walls.”She says it’s been tough knowing Christina’s killer has not been caught. Lisa says she has many questions and is cannot find any closure without finding answers.“Was she dumped there? Was she shot there? So my brain is at 100 miles per hour trying to come up with all these scenarios,” she said.Police are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward, saying they can even remain anonymous through Crime Stoppers.“There might be information out there that people think is irrelevant,” Lisa said. “But it could be very relevant to law enforcement.” 1845

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The US Marine Corps is responding after a pilot made an inappropriate flight pattern over the Salton Sea. According to a statement from Major Josef Patterson, the pilot flew in a pattern resembling a "phallic image."The T-34C aircraft is assigned to the Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 101, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing. An investigation is underway and, at this time, it's unclear whether or not any disciplinary action will be taken. Read the full statement below:  524

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The University of California system has appointed its first-ever Black president in the system’s history, Cal Matters said Tuesday.Michael V. Drake will become the 21st president of the University of California.Drake is making the move after leaving The Ohio State University last week. There, he served as the university’s president from 2014 to 2020.Drake was also chancellor of UC Irvine for nine years and served as the University of California vice president for health affairs from 2000 to 2005.“Much has changed in the 15 years since I was given the privilege of becoming chancellor at UC Irvine, but not my absolute belief in this great University and its time-honored mission,” Drake said. “I look forward to working with the regents, chancellors, students, faculty, staff, alumni, and our broader community as we, together, guide the University through the challenging times ahead. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego man who claimed he punched a San Diego Police officer in self-defense was convicted on four counts Friday.Frederick Jefferson was arrested February 3 at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan. At the time, police were trying to disperse a crowd which had gathered as two groups debated the historical significance of the park. Barricades were in place, and dozens of officers were standing by to keep order.During a jailhouse interview with 10News, Jefferson said a San Diego Police officer asked him to get out the street. However, Jefferson said he didn’t want to walk with the protestors.RELATED: San Diego man claims he punched officer in self defenseJefferson said he tried talking to the officer but admitted he did not get out of the street.“When they got out of the car, I continued walking,” he said. “I told them I said, ‘I’m just going to keep walking on’ and as I kept walking on they came up behind me.”RELATED: Video: Demonstration between groups at Chicano Park becomes violentJefferson said an officer grabbed his shirt and swung a billy club.“I was afraid that if this dude got back a hold of me he was going to go town on me with the billy club," Jefferson said.San Diego Police Lt. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego will begin its first over water testing of lighting on the San Diego-Coronado Bay Bridge, as the Port continues efforts to install lighting across a portion of the bridge.The testing will start on Sunday, Nov. 8, and continue to Saturday, Nov. 14, from 6:15 p.m. to midnight.The testing will include 170 computer-programmed LED lights and controllers temporarily installed on three of the bridge's tallest columns near the center of the structure. Each night, a live technical test will be conducted in different colors, combinations, sequencing, and arrangements."This bridge lighting test provides San Diego a unique opportunity to see what’s possible and how the infusion of technology and art can make people feel connected to, and inspired by, our beautiful waterfront," said Commissioner Marshall Merrifield, Port of San Diego Board of Port Commissioners. "Our goal is to ignite the imaginations of every person in the San Diego region, and after years of dedicated time to the project, bring forward a viable, beautiful addition to the nighttime skyline."The testing will see periods of darkness as other aspects are being tested, so the lighting won't be constant illuminated.The upcoming testing is the second test of the project. The first took place in April 2019, when lighting was tested on two columns over land on the San Diego side of the bridge.Following the over water testing, the Port will reach out to community members for input about the lighting and design. 1530
