SANYA, April 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao met here Friday with Kazakhstan's President Nursultan Nazarbayev and discussed the measures to withstand the impact of the global financial crisis.     The two leaders, who were in the city of Sanya for the 2009 meeting of the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) in south China's Hainan Province, expressed willingness to make concerted efforts to cope with the crisis. He said the two countries should:     -- take effective measures to maintain the growth of bilateral trade;     -- fulfill previous agreements and give priority to the cooperation in the energy and resources sectors;     -- reinforce financial and investment cooperation to ensure smooth implementation of major cooperation projects;     -- promote cooperation in the non-resources field, such as infrastructures, so as to forge a more dynamic bilateral trade relation.     Nazarbayev said the two countries had signed a series of cooperative documents during his visit, which fully reflected the common will of the two nations to jointly resist the financial crisis and China's strong support to Kazakhstan.     He believed that China would certainly be able to cope with the challenges, which was crucial for strengthening the international effort in combating the crisis.     Kazakhstan agreed with China's tentative plan on enhancing economic and trade cooperation between the two countries and was ready to work with China to boost cooperation in such sectors as oil and gas, agriculture, technology innovation, finance and transportation, he said.     The BFA, established in 2001, is a high-level forum where governments, businesses and scholars promote regional economic integration and bring Asian countries closer to their development goals.     Under the theme "Asia: Managing Beyond Crisis," more than 1,600participants will discuss how to cope with the international financial crisis.

SANMEN, Zhejiang, April 19 (Xinhua) -- China on Sunday started the construction of its first third-generation pressurized water reactors using AP 1000 technologies developed by U.S.-based Westinghouse. The reactors, located in Sanmen of east China's Zhejiang Province, will also be the first in the world using such technologies.     The Sanmen Nuclear Power Plant will be built in three phases, with an investment of more than 40 billion yuan (5.88 billion U.S. dollars) injected in the first phase.     The first phase project will include two units each with a generating capacity of 1.25 million kw. The agreement also involves technology transfer to China.     Two of the four pressurized water reactors will be installed in Sanmen of Zhejiang Province and two in Haiyang City, eastern Shandong Province.     William Poirier, vice president of Nuclear Power Plants China of Westinghouse Electric Company, said China has a sound nuclear power security system with a strict supervision work.     He said he believed China can replicate the experiences of the third-generation nuclear power technologies and build more such stations.     China's mainland has 11 nuclear reactors at six plants, all on the east coast, with a combined installed capacity of 9.07 million kw.     To meet its fast economic growth, China plans to develop more nuclear power. The country plans to have 40 million kw of installed nuclear capacity on its mainland by 2020, which would be4 percent of projected electricity supply capacity, or double the current level.     Of the 11 reactors, three use domestic technologies, two are equipped with Russian technology and four with French technologies, and two are Canadian designed. TAIPEI, March 14 (Xinhua) -- Premier Wen Jiabao's press conference on Friday has drawn positive comments in Taiwan, making the headlines in Saturday's local newspapers and leading to a rise in the stock market.     Mainstream newspapers on the island hailed Wen's remarks of "Even if I can no longer walk, I will crawl to Taiwan" as a big goodwill sign from the mainland toward improving cross-straits relations.     The China Times, besides devoting its front page to the press conference, ran an op-ed piece saying that the premier gave an amazing answer to the Taiwan-related question.     The article said Wen used ordinary language in his speech to stay close to ordinary Chinese people, which sounded sincere and showed greater confidence from the leader.     The United Daily News also widely covered the press conference, saying that Wen's remark that "We can launch new economic stimulus policies at any time" demonstrates confidence and hope.     Zhang Wuyue, director of the institute of mainland studies in Taiwan's Tamkang University, told Xinhua that the premier's words would have positive influences on cross-straits relations and help them toward peaceful development.     A senior staffer at a Taiwan investment company said that the premier's warm remarks have prompted the surge of stocks that were originally facing pressure to fall.     Taiwan's benchmark weighted index rose by 142.74 points, or 3 percent, to close at 4, 897.39 on Friday, the highest since November.
