Stefani Carroll-Kirchoff always checks the washer and dryer to make sure none of her three cats have climbed inside. Well, almost always.Last week, after fetching more clothes for a load of laundry, she shut the door without thinking. She set the machine to express wash -- warm water, cold rinse -- and walked away.Thirty-five minutes later, when the cycle was done, she noticed the clothes were still dripping wet. She was just about to shut the door again when she saw a single white paw sticking out from the wet laundry.Somehow, her 1-year-old cat Felix had found his way into the machine. She quickly took him out and called her father, who raced them to the Animal Emergency and Referral Center of Minnesota.Although Felix had lost his vision and had pneumonia from the amount of water in his lungs, he survived and is doing better now -- he can see and has started eating. He's still on oxygen.Though the vets told her it's just a matter of time until Felix fully recovers, Carroll-Kirchoff said she'll never forgive herself. "I've been in shock the last few days," she said. "I mean, this is going to haunt me for the rest of my life."The costs are going up, too. Carroll-Kirchoff's daughter began a GoFundMe appeal for Felix to help offset the rising medical bills, which she said are already up to ,000. She said it's the least they could do after Felix fought to stay alive."After this has happened, I'm going to find a way to give back," she said.Carroll-Kirchoff works at a pet grooming salon and has been a cat owner for 11 years. TAMPA, Fla. — A Florida family was attacked outside their home by a swarm of yellow jackets over the weekend.Hundreds of them covered the husband, wife and their 8-year-old son.“We just ran, and ran and ran until they finally decided to leave us alone," Luis Figueroa said.The swarm of yellow jackets, disturbed by a falling palm frond, attacked Figueroa and his family on the way to church."When the fire captain came,” Figueroa said, “he came back to me and he said, ‘you guys are lucky to be alive. You got over 10,000 (wasps) on top of your car.’ ”Conner Keller, an exterminator for Insect IQ, said he had a similar experience when he went out to the scene.“There were hundreds on my truck two days later when I pulled up. Once they’re disturbed and that nest has opened up, it’s on," Keller said.When yellow jacket nests open, Keller and Insect IQ respond all year round. They were the ones called since the nest was originally on Hillsborough County property."A yellow jacket tornado ensued and there was just a huge tornado of yellow jackets. SHARON, Penn. – Tariffs raise prices on items companies import to sell or make products with, which affects small businesses across the U.S. Two thirds of Americans say owning a small business is part of their American dream. Seven years ago, Carla Infante made that dream a reality in the small town of Sharon, Pennsylvania. “It was frightening. After I got everything all set up for the grand opening, I thought ‘what if nobody comes?’”Despite that fear, that was never Infante’s problem. Knitting and crocheting enthusiasts have been streaming in since Never Enough Yarn opened, either for her variety or her knitting nights. “I have people who come regularly every Thursday night for our knitting group. Sometimes we knit and drink coffee. And sometimes we get a bottle of wine out instead of coffee,” said Infante. “It's been amazing.” As amazing as it has been to have loyal customers and consistent demand, Never Enough Yarn is closing. “The Internet has really done a lot of injury to local small businesses,” said Infante. “So that had been creeping up on me. But when they put the tariffs in, that really pushed me over the edge.”There have been a half dozen rounds of tariffs imposed on Chinese goods over the past year and a half. The latest have really affected businesses like Infante’s. The prices of all Infante’s yarn and knitting supplies has had to go up. For example – just one knitting needle in her shop has gone up by in less than a year. “First it was we'll wait and see, let's see what happens because I thought when the first 50 cents came on each package of needles like we can live with that,” said Infante. “I didn't realize it was going to keep coming. When that dollar came it was like I can't survive. I just can't pass this on.”So, before a new round of tariffs hit, she’s ending this chapter of her American dream."I made it seven years and I would have liked to stay a little longer,” said Infante. “But I also know when it's time to go you know the old saying ‘know when to fold them.’”"A lot of shops are closing, it’s not just Carla’s,” said a customer of Infante’s. “We had one in Grove City and she went out of business. It’s heartbreaking.”Analysts expect continued higher tariffs on Chinese goods could lead to 12,000 more retail businesses closing within the next year."One thing I'd like to say to most people is, if you don't believe it's happening, take a closer look because it is and if it hasn't affected you yet, keep your eyes open because it's going to it's going to affect everyone at some point.
