For students whose summer plans fell through, organizations across the country are working to make sure internships are still a possibility.The DeBruce Foundation is teaming up with partners to provide students a virtual head start in their careers.The national nonprofit foundation, based in Kansas City, Missouri, works to expand pathways to economic growth and opportunity. One of those ways is student success and internships.However, this summer, they had to pivot their summer plans due to COVID-19.According to Glassdoor, internship hiring fell 39 percent in April 2020 compared to the same time last year."We’re building talent and sometimes it’s talent for today, but sometimes it’s talent for tomorrow," The DeBruce Foundation Senior Director, Robin Smith said. "And so our work pipeline suffers if we don’t have those ways for people to gain work relevant skill. And so it functions on that level and then individuals' level of really connecting talent and opportunity."That's why the foundation is seeking out opportunities, not only to hire their own interns but partnering with area organizations that help students get internships."There are different partners that we work with that they wanted to test and try virtual internships," Smith said. "We were able to provide financial support for them and also different kinds of tools that we use."Hire KC, Startland Internship and Urban Leadership Fellowship are the partners the Foundation is working with and providing funding to allow more students the opportunity for a virtual internship.Alex Oleson, a rising senior at St. Louis University, is The DeBruce Foundation for this summer and says it's been a fairly smooth transition going into a virtual internship after completing online learning for the last three months."In some instances, it does give you a bit more flexibility," Oleson said. "It’s kind of like working from home but I like it and I like that there’s definitely an aspect of dependability."Oleson is studying political science with a minor in economics and urban poverty studies. He said he's been able to delve into various areas with the foundation, including strategic planning, media, marketing and communications and product development, where he's able to provide his insight.The foundation also has a product development lab. Former Gov. Deval Patrick has decided not to run for president and plans to announce his decision soon, a source close to the Massachusetts Democrat tells CNN.Patrick, a two-term governor and close ally to former President Barack Obama, had been considering a 2020 run after entering the private sector and taking a job at Bain Capital in 2015. He had upped his political involvement ahead of the 2018 midterms -- endorsing candidates in South Carolina, Texas, New Jersey and a handful of other states -- leading many to believe he was going to jump into the race.Patrick, despite the speculation that he was going to run, had repeatedly acknowledged the enormity of the decision."It's on my radar screen," Patrick told a public radio station in Kansas City during the midterms, adding that "it's a huge decision.""I am trying to think through 2020," Patrick said. "And that's a decision I'm trying to think through from a personal and family point of view."Patrick also expressed concerns about standing out in what is expected to be a wide-open Democratic field."It's hard to see how you even get noticed in such a big, broad field without being shrill, sensational or a celebrity," Patrick told David Axelrod, a former top Obama adviser, in September. "And I'm none of those things and I'm never going to be any of those things."A spokesman for Patrick declined to comment on the governor's decision not to run for President, which was first reported by Politico.Patrick has been receiving private support from many of the same aides and advisers who helped Obama vault into the White House in 2008."Deval would make an outstanding President," Valerie Jarrett, Obama's former senior adviser, told the New Yorker in November. With many counties in Florida reporting record number of vote-by-mail requests, some are wondering will more controversy emerge in 2020? Tuesday's primary may provide clues. TUESDAY'S PRIMARYWhile Tuesday's primary does not involve presidential politics in Florida, a number of races impacting the state legislature, Congress and local governments are taking place. HISTORY OF ISSUESFlorida's issues with elections goes all the way back to 1876. The presidential election was still undecided with Florida being unsure how to award its 4 Electoral College votes. Florida wasn't alone. South Carolina and Louisiana were also unsure. As a result, Congress had to step in and resolve the issue with Rutherford B. Hayes eventually becoming President. Most Americans know Florida because of the issues in 2000. With another presidential election hanging in the balance, Al Gore and George W. Bush battled for votes during a 36-day recount. Palm Beach County's butterfly ballot, with confusing placement of names for some voters, likely resulted in 2,800 votes for Pat Buchanan instead of Gore. "Hanging Chads" in the state became a household phrase nationwide to describe ballots with paper fragments still hanging from them. Ballots that year were hole punch style for many voters. Like in 2000 and 2016, Florida has long been an important state for nominees to win. It has helped choose the winning presidential candidate every election since 1992.RECENT ISSUESIssues in Florida's Elections have continued in recent years. In Broward County, nearly 1,000 uncounted ballots were found in a warehouse in 2012. In 2018, 22 ballots were counted that were supposed to be rejected.
