(KGTV) — A Chula Vista homeowner encountered an intruder as she was getting dressed in her bedroom, before giving chase.Russell Buckley was alerted to his Ring doorbell video around 6:45 a.m. Friday. A person in a red hoodie was lurking near the front door of his home off Otay Lakes Road, while Buckley was out of town on business."Tried to text my wife to let her know someone was in front of my house," said Buckley.About 25 minutes later, he got another alert. The video showed his wife screaming, as she chased that same man across their lawn."Absolute panic," said Buckley.He phoned his wife Victoria and learned what happened. She was in her bedroom getting dressed while their housekeeper was working in the house. His wife had just put on her shoes when the door opened. A young man with a red hoodie walked in. "She screamed. He screamed and turned around and ran back down the stairs," said Buckley.As he ran, her fear turned into rage."How dare you come into my home ... She has a protective instinct," said Buckley.His petite, 52-year-old wife - all of five feet tall - gave chase."From what I'm told, he dove across the counter and out the window," said Buckley.Buckley showed us a shattered kitchen window, which he says was both the entry and exit point. He says his wife ran out the front door and sprinted toward the intruder, screaming."At one point, she's able to grab him," said Buckley.She tugged at a pillowcase he was holding, stuffed with her daughter's jewelry, but the man got away and into a getaway car - a silver sedan. Buckley is grateful his wife was not hurt, fand still shaking his head over her leap into action."Told her it wasn't the wisest decision, but I'm very proud of her. It was a fight or flight instinct, and more of a fight for her," said Buckley. Buckley says among the items stolen: a gold Chilean communion medallion in his wife's family for more than a century. Police told the Buckleys four young men were recorded in the neighborhood stealing license plates right before the break-in. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) - Video shows a frantic rescue effort in Chula Vista after a car went off Interstate 5, leaving two adults and a child trapped upside down. “We got a kid! We got a kid! Oh my god,” said Jay Corona, one of the good Samaritans who rushed to help when they spotted the overturned car near H Street around 10 a.m. Corona and his girlfriend Priscilla Valdovinos were on their way to a salon when they came across the wreck. “I was shocked, I was nervous, I was scared, all that,” said Valdovinos. "Somebody's in there. Somebody's in there."Smoke was rushing from the muffler so furiously Corona thought the car would explode. He saw the family hanging upside down by their seat belts and was able to save a mother and her young child. However, the front door of the sedan was stuck. “It wouldn't open. Because it was really jammed. I just kept pulling and pulling, and then the next thing I know I yanked it open,” Corona said. “I got it open and [the grandma] was in the front seat like, traumatized. She was like, 'Help me please, my back is hurting.'” RELATED: Good Samaritan recovering after getting hit by carValdovinos and Corona said the sedan hydroplaned in wet weather. With the help of other drivers, Corona escorted the grandmother back to the roadway. She was shaken up, but not seriously injured. Corona, who works as a security guard at a North Park bar, says his training kicked in. “I was very proud. He makes me proud every day! I fall in love with him every day, but today I told him, this is one that I'll remember,” said Valdovinos. The couple was struck by how many other people stopped to help. CHULA VISTA (KGTV) -- A nearly million dollar grant was recently awarded to the Chula Vista Elementary School District to focus on Science Technology Engineering and Math Programs.Some parents noticed the recipients of the grant were all schools in the east side of Chula Vista.“It’s not equal,” one dad told ABC 10News. He didn’t want to use his name, but both of his children attend a school on the west side of Chula Vista.“They need to find the exact same thing that covers the west side schools,” he said.The Military-Connected Student Academic and Support Program grant—which is 0,000—is a five-year commitment to STEM, according to a news release from the district.The schools that will be receiving that grant money included:- Enrique S. Camarena Elementary-Corky McMillin Elementary-Saburo Muraoka Elementary-Olympic View Elementary-Wolf Canyon ElementaryAll the schools are in the Otay Ranch area.Matthew Tessier, the Assistant Superintendent for Innovation and Instruction, said the schools were chosen based on the number of military families.“Part of the grant application is there needed to be 10 percent or higher military-connected children at the school and we picked our top five military-connected schools,” Tessier said. District spokesperson Anthony Millican said the requirement was set by the Department of Defense and no schools on the west side meet the requirement for the grant. There are 12 schools in the district that have more than 12 percent of enrollment identified as military-connected students, according to the district website.“We’re really cognizant of supporting our military-connected children because I think a lot of times we forget that they have a lot of unique needs… whether their parents are deployed, whether they have one parent leading a household for multiple months,” Tessier added.According to numbers given to ABC 10News by a district spokesperson, there are more than 1,000 military-connected students in the five schools that received the grant. 30 percent of Wolf Canyon’s population are military-connected students, which is the highest in the district.Camarena, Muraoka, and Olympic View all reported more than 20 percent of their students as military-connected. McMillin Elementary was at 19 percent.The school district’s project is calling “STEAMing into the Health Sciences.” The grant will allow participating schools to have the opportunity to attend the district’s Health Station, which is the latest in a series of hands-on learning stations creating with community partners.The participating schools will also have access to an online platform to introduce students to industry professionals, host weekly after-school STEM programs for select military-connected fourth graders, as well as provide a 1-week long summer camp for some military-connected students.Tessier said the Health Station experience will not be limited to the schools who received the grant. “We are committed—all means all. CHULA VISTA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect after two women discovered the body of a homeless man in Chula Vista Tuesday morning. According to police, two sisters were walking on the 1400 block of Broadway around 1:20 a.m. when they discovered a man who wasn’t breathing.Officers tried to save the man, later identified as 56-year-old Ivan Velez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later found signs of trauma and are currently searching for a suspect. No description of the suspect was given. Children should be learning in classrooms.That was the message from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday, less than 24 hours after the Palm Beach County School Board reached a consensus to start the 2020-21 academic year with online-only classes."Educating our kids is absolutely essential," DeSantis said during a news conference at the Jacksonville Port Authority. "I have no doubt we can do this safely."Claiming that students across the state have suffered an "education gap" from online distance learning, he urged school districts to consider opening brick and mortar schools right away for the 2020-21 academic year."I want our kids to be able to minimize this education gap that I think has developed," DeSantis said. "In spite of good efforts with the online, it's just not the same. So I worry about that gap."The governor added he's concerned about the social impact that distance learning is having on children."There's something to be said for being in school, seeing people you know, growing up like a normal kid," DeSantis said.On Wednesday, the Palm Beach County School Board reached a consensus to start the 2020-21 academic year, which is slated to begin on Monday, Aug. 10, with online-only classes due to the ongoing threat of the coronavirus pandemic.A final vote will take place on July 15.DeSantis, whose three children are not old enough to attend kindergarten, said he would send them to elementary school if they were of age."I would not hesitate to put them in, in terms of the risk. Because the risk, fortunately for kids, is extremely, extremely low," DeSantis said.While the governor supports having children in classrooms, he did admit that exceptions should be made for students with significant health issues, and ultimately, the choice is up to parents."Different parents have different calculations. If a parent wants to opt for virtual education, they should absolutely be able to do that.
