SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein introduced a Senate resolution Wednesday to condemn the deadly April 27 shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue. The resolution condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism and other forms of hatred as antithetical to ``American values of dignity and respect for all people.'' It also expresses hope that the three injured survivors of the attack make a full and swift recovery and includes a call to honor the memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who died at the scene of the shooting that occurred during a celebration of the end of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover. ``The rising threat of white nationalism and white supremacy is in direct contradiction with the highest ideals of our country, and I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this resolution to condemn this despicable hate,'' Harris said. ``Hate has no place in our country,'' Feinstein said. ``Our resolution condemns the anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Chabad and reaffirms our nation's values of openness and tolerance so all Americans can worship freely without fear of violence.'' A similar Senate resolution condemning anti-Semitism was introduced last week by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Tim Kaine, D-Virginia. Chabad of Poway Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, who lost his right index finger in the shooting, attended the White House's May 2 National Day of Prayer event at the invitation of President Donald Trump. The president's adviser on Israel, Jason Greenblatt, called Goldstein ``a pillar of strength'' after a visit to the synagogue last week. 1626

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego judge's ruling today clears the way for the proposed Plaza de Panama project in Balboa Park to proceed.San Diego Superior Court Judge Gregory W. Pollack ruled both the project's proposed bond funding mechanism and an agreement of cooperation with the Plaza de Panama Committee to be legal, allowing the city to proceed with the plan to reduce traffic congestion in the park, according to the city attorney's office.San Diegans for Open Government argued that the city should have allowed voters to decide whether the city should rely on million in bonds to help fund the project. The City Council approved the project by a 7-1 vote in 2012, but six years of challenges and litigation stalled its implementation. The project will limit vehicle access and improve parking in order to restore the Plaza de California and Plaza de Panama as dedicated pedestrian areas."Balboa Park truly is the jewel of San Diego, and I am excited that the city can finally move forward with its plans to revitalize the Park for the enjoyment of San Diegans and tourists alike," City Attorney Mara W. Elliott said after the ruling. The Plaza de Panama project will also include improvements to more than six acres of park space and improved park access. The city will select contractors through a competitive bidding process and plans to break ground on the project as soon as next spring. 1407

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - In-state University of California students got a financial reprieve Thursday, with the system opting to forego a vote on a proposed tuition hike in favor of pushing the state for more funding."Raising tuition is always a last resort and one we take very seriously," UC President Janet Napolitano said. "We will continue to advocatewith our students, who are doing a tremendous job of educating legislators about the necessity of adequately funding the university to ensure UC remains a world-class institution and engine of economic growth for our state."The Board of Regents had been expected to consider a 2.7 percent boost in base tuition. While that vote will no longer happen, the regents could revisit the issue "depending on the outcome of budget negotiations in Sacramento."UC officials said they will look to secure an additional 0 million in state funding above what was already proposed for the coming year in the governor's budget proposal. The announcement echoed a decision announced last week by California State University Chancellor Timothy White, who said the CSU would also focus on lobbying the state for additional funds rather than pursuing a tuition hike."In light of California's strong economy, California's students and their families should not be saddled with additional financial burden to attain public higher education," White said. "We will continue to make the case to lawmakers, who represent all Californians, that an educated citizenry should be at the top of the state's highest priorities."In January, the UC Board of Regents approved a 3.5 percent increase in non-resident supplemental tuition, taking it from ,014 in 2017-18 to ,992 for 2018-19, a 8 increase. Board members said at the time that the increase could be eliminated if adequate state funding is secured. 1843

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego man who sexually assaulted three women, some of whom were unconscious during the acts, was sentenced Friday to six years in state prison and ordered to register as a sex offender for life.Juan Carlos Cordero, 37, pleaded guilty in September to three felony sexual assault counts stemming from allegations that he assaulted women he met on dating sites or in person between 2015 and 2019.Cordero pleaded guilty to penetration of an unconscious victim by a foreign object, forcible sodomy and sodomy of an unconscious victim, with each count corresponding to women identified only as Jane Does 1 through 3.RELATED: San Diego women face their accused rapist at preliminary hearingSome of the victims alleged they may have been drugged by the defendant and testified during a preliminary hearing last year that while with Cordero, they blacked out and woke up in his bed, with little to no recollection of the previous night. Many testified that they discovered they'd suffered injuries that led them to believe they had been sexually assaulted. Some women testified they felt drugged the following morning but had no memory of how that may have occurred, while others testified that Cordero forced alcohol or drugs on them.RELATED: Sex assault suspect may have more victims, San Diego Police sayIn addition to the three victims Cordero pleaded guilty to assaulting, testimony also came from several other women alleging he committed similar acts on them, as state law allows testimony from alleged victims of defendants charged with sexual offenses in order to establish a pattern of behavior.Cordero was arrested in March 2019.Following his arrest and the District Attorney's Office filing of felony charges, San Diego police put a call out for any potential victims, stating that Cordero had been known to identify himself as "J.C." to young women in the area. 1895

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - District Attorney Summer Stephan warned San Diegans, especially senior citizens, to beware of a scam in which callers are pretending to be from the Social Security Administration in an attempt to obtain Social Security numbers for financial crimes. There are multiple versions of the rip-off, Stephan said.In some cases, the caller may say a person's Social Security number has been linked to a crime and has been blocked, but that for a fee it can be reinstated. The caller then asks the victim to verify the Social Security number.Another variation involves the caller saying that a person's Social Security number has been used to apply for multiple credit cards, which could cause the person to lose Social Security benefits. Or the caller may say that acause the person to lose Social Security benefits. Or the caller may say that a person's bank account is on the verge of being seized and the victim should withdraw all cash from the account."All of these are scams," Stephan warned. "Do not provide your Social Security number or banking information to any caller, even if the caller ID shows Social Security's 1-800 number. Instead, hang up and call Social Security to verify. Unfortunately, scammers use technology to make any number they want appear on a caller ID."The Social Security Administration's phone number is (800) 772-1213. 1370
