Large U.S. employers saw their smallest health care cost increase in more than two decades due to COVID-19, and workers may benefit from that next year, according to the consulting firm Mercer.Patients stayed home and out of doctor’s offices this year to avoid the global pandemic, and that led to an average 1.9% cost hike for companies with 500 or more employees, Mercer found in a national survey.Those employers were expecting a 3.5% increase, said Beth Umland, Mercer’s director of health and benefits research.The lowest cost increase since 1997 will help many large employers avoid raising deductibles or doing other things to shift costs to workers in 2021, Umland said.Many companies also will spend some of what they saved adding programs that help improve the health of those covered by their plans. That could include expanding telemedicine, improving access to behavioral health care like therapy or adding programs that help people with a specific condition such as diabetes.Large employers pay their own health care claims. LA JOLLA, Calif. (KGTV) -- Many beach parking lots remain closed because of the coronavirus pandemic. Members of the Surfrider Foundation of San Diego say someone is making it even harder to find public street parking by illegally painting curbs red.Surfers who frequent La Jolla Shores noticed something was a little off."Me and my friend came here the other day… and we're like, 'What? What the heck?'" surfer, Maddie Sadlier laughed.They say the public parking on Camino Del Collado, a small street that runs parallel to La Jolla Shores Drive suddenly vanished."It's been like this for a really long time, up until recently, it just turned red," surfer Zach Rudy said.It turns out, the red curb on Camino Del Collado is fake and illegal."It's really a problem that somebody took it upon themselves to take away public parking right next to the beach," Kristin Brinner, a volunteer with the Surfrider Foundation San Diego, said.Some parts of the curb are only painted red on top, and there are several splotches of red on the road - clear signs that it was not a professionally painted curb. Brinner says this is the second summer in a row that this small street curb has been illegally painted."I do hope that people realize that this is more than just a simple bucket of paint," Brinner said. "It's vandalism, and it's preventing people from accessing the beach that belong to all of us. For someone to do this and say that 'No you can't access the beach near me,' is a really pretty hateful act, in my opinion."According to San Diego Police, painting a curb red is a misdemeanor crime of vandalism. If caught, a person can be cited or arrested.The Surfrider Foundation does not know who keeps doing this. But they say every summer, as the beach crowds increase, so does the problem."It does seem like it was somebody in this neighborhood that just was maybe sick of outsiders coming in, wanted to claim it as their own street," Rudy said.San Diego Parking Enforcement is aware of the vandalism on Camino Del Collado and is already in the process of getting it repainted. But Brinner says the best way to fix the problem quickly is to be aware."They should document their parking spots they often use, and then they will have proof so they can say 'Hey, this used to be here, and now it's not!' So documentation is part of the solution," Brinner said.If you suspect that a curb has been illegally painted, report it to the police. 2442

LA MESA, Calif. (KGTV) -- The family of a La Mesa woman says their mother in a medically induced coma after getting shot with a projectile that lodged between her eyes.Leslie Furcron was among thousands of people protesting Saturday night in front of the La Mesa Police Department. She was recording on Facebook Live. You can hear her yelling, then the phone drops, and the screen goes black."She was brutally attacked on a peaceful protest. If I commit a crime. I'm going to jail, no if's and or buts about it," said one of her sons, Ahmed Furcron.He says bystanders rushed her to the hospital. Her prognosis is unclear, but the family says she may lose an eye.Attorney Dante Pride is representing the family. Pride and other family members held a news conference outside the La Mesa Police Department Tuesday. "We are going to get justice. We will not be silenced, everyone who is watching this I want you to call the La Mesa police department and ask them what is that officer's name who decided he could attempt to murder a non-violent protestor?" asked Pride.Pride says the police department hasn't provided any information about what happened. The family believes she was hit with a rubber bullet or bean bag casing, but they're waiting for the hospital to confirm.During the news conference, a reporter said they had witness information that Furcron through a bottle, but the family says that is absolutely false."I have no evidence that she threw anything, she dropped a can when she got shot," said Pride."Even if she did throw a can, does she deserve to get shot in the face, that's all we want to know," said Ahmed.Pride also points to the La Mesa Police Departments' own training rules, which say bean bag munitions should not be aimed above the waist. "Why is supposed to be below the waist, a shot above the chest can be fatal," said Pride.La Mesa Police have refused to talk to the media about the incident. 1931

LA MESA (KGTV)— Meteorologists are predicting a wet Christmas week in San Diego. 10News revisited residents at the San Diego RV Resort in La Mesa that dealt with a Thanksgiving flood to see if they are prepared for the next set of thunderstorms. Taylor Jaime showed 10News around the RV resort. "She [My mother] was cooking a turkey at my sister's house for Thanksgiving," Jaime remembered. She said she never got to enjoy that turkey after her home got washed away. Jaime and her family live at the San Diego RV Resort full-time. On Thanksgiving day, heavy rains inundated the ravine that runs parallel to the resort. "So the water started coming over this [the wall]," Jaime motioned. The retaining wall collapsed and the water came up waist-high, destroying two of her cars, their 40-foot trailer and everything inside. Unfortunately, their the new RV was insured at the time of the storm. "The water was so nasty. There was crab, there was fish in the trailer," Jaime remembered. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the RV resort is right in the middle of a heavy flood zone. The resort staff told 10News they just finished rebuilding the wall Saturday. In the last month, Jaime said she saw Caltrans and California Conservation Corps workers clean up some of the debris, but she fears another collapse. "The water won't be able to go through. It'll get stuck down there, like last time," pointing at the west end of the resort lot.With heavy rains forecasted during Christmas week, some of Jaime's neighbors have already lined sandbags along their lots. Lucky for Jaime and her family, they have a spare trailer, albeit an older and smaller one. They parked it away from the ravine and closer to the entrance gate. Six people and several small animals are now crammed inside the trailer. They didn't skimp on holiday decorations, though."We are still in the spirit," Jaime said. "It's not going to bring us down. We are still a family. We still have each other. And that's what matters the most."10News reached out to San Diego RV Resort's parent company for comment to see if they are making other preparations ahead of the storm. (KGTV) - Dozens of people lined up for hours, as Play it Again Sports reopened in La Mesa on Thursday morning.Alfredo Lopez was the first in line, hoping to buy new weights."It says they're really resilient. So I think that's definitely part of what La Mesa has," Lopez says.The store had been closed since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. But it had to stay closed longer than expected after looters destroyed the store following protests in La Mesa on May 30.The protests were over police violence, but the angry mob that attacked the Play it Again Sports came long after the protests ended."I was not happy. I was upset that night, for sure," says owner Dan Buxton. "So much had been put into the store and for all it to be taken away at that moment, it hurt."Buxton says he had to replace the ceiling, the light fixtures, the flooring, windows, displays, and much of his inventory.But he says the community helped rebuild and showed its true colors."Clearly, the real La Mesa is what we saw after May 30 and we're proud to be part of it," says Buxton.As for the line that greeted him when he opened the store Thursday, Buxton simply said, "Thank you.""Just like the support we've been receiving for the past 7 weeks, it's the same thing," he says. "People are unbelievable with the support they show. So, we're ecstatic about it." 1364
