DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) – The Bing Crosby Season at the Del Mar Racetrack kicks off Saturday with new rules to keep everyone involved healthy and safe.Del Mar Thoroughbred Club Media Director Mac McBride told ABC 10News, "We normally have one large jockey's room. What we've done now is made three jockey’s rooms to thin out the ranks so they're not sitting on top of each other like they do normally.”Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this racing season will be noticeably different than years past. This season, jockeys will also wear masks on and off the horses, test daily for the coronavirus, and if anyone receives a positive result, they'll be required to quarantine for at least 10 days."When we put that into place in the summer after our first hiccup, it worked out well. We had no further incidents with our riders,” McBride said.McBride added that even though the club took a big hit with empty stands this summer, folks were still tuning in and bets were still flying high."We thought we might do well, but we had no idea how we were going do that well, and we did. The jump from million to million average a day staggered us, it was amazing,” said McBride. Thanks to betting profits, the racetrack was able to maintain their four-legged showstoppers, which is their top priority, among keeping everyone safe."Even if we raced and lost money, it still would've been a good thing because horses in the end would be taken care of, and that's the focus right now. Keep horses well fed and safe,” McBride told ABC 10News.Organizers will also be keeping an eye out where San Diego County stands in the state's COVID-19 tier system. If the county were to fall from the red tier into the yellow tier, outdoor sporting events like theirs could allow them to fill seats."Obviously, we wouldn't look for 40,000 people, but if we had 4,000 or something like that sure, we could bring them in, and space them out. We'd love to bring them back,” said McBride.Another big event in the future is the world-famous Breeder's Cup. It's slated to take place in Del Mar next November and organizers said they're preparing now, COVID-19 or not. 2154

DEL MAR, Calif., (KGTV)— “Enter at your own risk”— That’s what the signs at Del Mar Beach say after at least three shark sightings in as many days. There was also one sighting off the Coronado Coast around noon Wednesday.Del Mar is precisely the escape Kathleen Pierce and her family were after. “We have been suffering in the hundred-degree weather in Temecula so we thought we’d come down to the beach,” Pierce said. It was a great plan until she saw the warning sign at the beach entrance. ADVISORY: SHARK SIGHTED. ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.“I saw the sign, and I had to pause,” Pierce said. But they jumped into the water anyway, because she figured, the likelihood of actually coming up onto a shark was low. But a few minutes in, her son spotted a few. “When the wave was about to crash, I just saw all of them swimming in a group,” her son Drew said. Drew said they were only about three to four feet long, so he ignored them. His friend was frightened and ran to the shore. “The sharks that were seen off of Del Mar, based on the size, we know that they were juveniles,” Research Biologist at the Southwest Fisheries Science Center, Heidi Dewar said. Dewar said if the sharks are under six feet, they are juveniles. They eat smaller fish, so they pose no threat to people. It is their parents we need to worry about. “If I saw a sub-adult or anything over 6 feet, I would probably personally get out of the water,” Dewar laughed. Pierce decided to say and keep an eye on her children at all times, because leaving early to get back to triple-digit temperatures, was not part of her plan. “If nothing else, we would just go a little bit more shallow water,” Pierce laughed. “We would not turn around and go back.”Dewar’s best advice to avoid shark attacks:1. Avoid the beach at dusk and dawn2. Stay away from river mouths3. Pay attention to lifeguards and their warnings10News also asked Dewar, why does it seem like we are seeing more sharks in the water, recently? Dewar said, in the 1990s, regulations were put in place that helped the fish population grow. Banning net fishing off the coast of California allowed for more fish to survive. More fish means more food for sharks, allowing them to grow and prosper. That is the cause of the increased shark population, and more sightings in recent times. 2317

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) -- It can be used to open doors, press buttons at the ATM, open trash cans and help with other things you'd normally use your for in public."It's ergonomically designed so it has this nice curvature on the backside, a nice grip feature because you're going to be using it through the day to pull door handles." They call it the Doorman, it was created by marketing guru and engineer, Vanessa Tan Kate and Jake Feuerstein, all before COVID-19."I was at work and noticed a coworker struggling to avoid touching door handle in the restroom," said Feuerstein. "I noticed this issue and being an engineer I went to work on looking for a solution. I went home and started to look for some sketches, made prototypes and started bouncing ideas off Vanessa."The duo is ready to launch their product and in a world where preventing the spread of germs is now the new norm, it will probably be in high demand. "Our mission really is to make people feel more comfortable when they're going out in public and navigating this new world we live in. Anytime they're touching a door handle or surface they can feel a little better knowing they're taking a precaution to keep them and other people safe," said Tan Kate. The pocket-sized Doorman weighs less than an ounce and will cost you . The couple's kicking off sales with a Kickstarter campaign set to start in a couple of weeks."If we bring this product to market and it helps even one person avoid getting sick or feel better going out in public, that means we've accomplished our goal." 1560

Democrat Cal Cunningham formally conceded on Tuesday to Republican incumbent Thom Tillis in the US Senate race in North Carolina that could help pave the way toward Republicans retaining Senate. The race in North Carolina has not been formally called by the Associated Press as there are an unknown number of provisional and uncured ballots that are left to be counted in North Carolina.Cunningham once held a significant lead in polling, but the last few polls that were released before the election were within the margin of error. Another race Republicans are likely to win is in Alaska, where Sen. Dan Sullivan is expected to maintain his seat.Assuming Tillis and Sullivan win re-election, Republicans will control at least 50 seats in the new US Senate come January. Two remaining seats will be decided in a runoff in Georgia. Democrat Jon Ossoff just barely forced a runoff against Republican David Perdue last week. In a special election, Democrat Raphael Warnock and Republican Kelly Loeffler will meet after Loeffler held off a Republican challenger to finish in the top 2 of last week's general election.Democrats would need both seats in Georgia to force a 50-50 tie in the US Senate, with Vice President-elect Kamala Harris acting as a tie breaker on the Democrats’ behalf. The two Georgia races will likely draw a lot of attention as Democrats will be hopeful to gain the two seats in order to have an easier path to get judicial and administration nominees approved by the Senate.Regardless, Democrats will gain some ground following the 2020 election, netting an additional seat after flipping seats in Colorado and Arizona. Democrats lost a seat in Alabama as Democrat Doug Jones lost to Republican and former college football coach Tommy Tuberville. 1773

DESCANSO (KGTV) -- A San Diego County couple is warning others after getting a flat tire from an unusual source. Pamela Jessup was running errands in her Toyota RAV4 on SR-79 near Old Highway 80 last Thursday when she heard a thump.Jessup says she pulled over and looked at her back tire. After not seeing anything wrong, she went on her way.The thumping, however, only intensified after she drove onto Interstate 8. When she drove home, Jessup says her husband Davis found a temporary lane marker nailed in to the tire. While doing their due diligence, the Descanso residents found dozens of temporary nail markers along the side of the road in the same area where Jessup ran into issues.A local tire shop was able to fix the damage to the tire, but it cost the pair . Other residents in the area took to social media to complain similar events that happened to them.On Facebook, at least three others said they also got flat tires after driving through the area. From Tuesday through Friday, neighbors reported a road construction project that included restriping.A spokesperson for the Caltrans subcontractor Granite Construction issued this statement: 1179
