Bulked-up, mutant “mighty mice” held onto their muscle during a monthlong stay at the International Space Station, returning to Earth with ripped bodybuilder physiques, scientists reported Monday. The findings hold promise for preventing muscle and bone loss in astronauts on prolonged space trips like Mars missions, as well as people on Earth who are confined to bed or need wheelchairs.A research team led by Dr. Se-Jin Lee of the Jackson Laboratory in Connecticut sent 40 young female black mice to the space station in December, launching aboard a SpaceX rocket. In a paper published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Lee said the 24 regular untreated mice lost considerable muscle and bone mass in weightlessness as expected — up to 18%.But the eight genetically engineered “mighty mice” launched with double the muscle maintained their bulk. Their muscles appeared to be comparable to similar “mighty mice” that stayed behind at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. In addition, eight normal mice that received “mighty mouse” treatment in space returned to Earth with dramatically bigger muscles. The treatment involves blocking a pair of proteins that typically limit muscle mass.A SpaceX capsule brought all 40 mice back in good condition, parachuting into the Pacific off the California coast in January. Some of the ordinary mice were injected with the “mighty mice” drug after returning and quickly built up more muscle than their untreated companions, Lee said. The scientists completed the experiment just as the coronavirus was hitting the U.S.“The only silver lining of COVID is that we had time to write it up very intensively” and submit the results for publication, said Dr. Emily Germain-Lee of Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, Lee’s wife who also took part in the study. Both are affiliated with the University of Connecticut. While encouraged by their findings, the couple said much more work needs to be done before testing the drug on people to build up muscle and bone, without serious side effects.“We’re years away. But that’s how everything is when you go from mouse to human studies,” Germain-Lee said.Lee said the experiment pointed out other molecules and signaling pathways worth investigating — “an embarrassment of riches ... so many things we’d like to pursue.” His next step: possibly sending more “mighty mice” to the space station for an even longer stay.Three NASA astronauts looked after the space mice, performing body scans and injections: Christina Koch and Jessica Meir, who performed the first all-female spacewalk last fall, and Andrew Morgan. They are listed as co-authors.___The Associated Press Health and Science Department receives support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute’s Department of Science Education. CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) — A pair of brothers was arrested this week after police say they tried to carjack a man working on his vehicle on Interstate 5, assaulted him, and fled onto Camp Pendleton property. The brothers were traveling on southbound I-5 on Tuesday at about 10 a.m. when their Ford Mustang broke down just north of Las Pulgas Road. The pair walked to Vista Point and asked a truck driver for a ride to Long Beach, but the driver said no, California Highway Patrol said. The brothers then approached a 58-year-old man from San Diego who was working on his broken-down vehicle. The man was leaning over the engine of his vehicle with the hood up when one of the brothers placed the man in a headlock while the other brother assaulted the man in the face and body, CHP said. The truck driver who denied the brothers a lift saw the attack and came to the victim's aid. The brothers fled the area west, and climbed over a fence onto Camp Pendleton, said CHP.Camp Pendelton Police were nearby and quickly found and detained the two. CHP officers responded to the scene as well. The victim received moderate to major injuries during the assault and is expected to recover.Gonzalo Lopez, 24, and Eusebio Lopez, 19, both from Long Beach, were arrested and charged with assault and battery, and attempted carjacking. Gonzalo was also charged with driving under the influence while Eusebio was charged with being drunk in public. 1444

CHICAGO, Ill. – So far this year, the coronavirus pandemic has cut international tourism in half. But one Chicago mom decided she would take her family globetrotting anyway without an airplane.High school English teacher Lynn Gilbertsen says remote learning got her two young children, 6-year-old Max and 3-year-old Beth, interested in far-off places.“They'd started to ask lots of lots of questions about all the countries and you know they know all the continents,” said Gilbertsen. But with COVID-19 grounding true world exploration, she opted for a different approach.“It occurred to me that we could do something where we could go places instead of being stuck in our house,” said Gilbertsen. She started with a list of landmarks and monuments that could stand in for the real thing. That included places like a golf course Eiffel Tower for France, a Hindu temple and Taj Mahal mural for India, and a public park with a statue of Athena helped them learn about Greece.“I wanted to feel like it does when you travel, where you get to really immerse yourself in wherever you are for a little while,” said Gilbertsen. All of her travel destinations are within an hour of her Chicago home. For their visit to Italy, they chose the Leaning Tower of Pisa. In actuality, it’s a half-scale replica attached to a suburban YMCA.Another favorite was an architectural scavenger hunt for pagoda-inspired structures in Chinatown.“It seems to me like such low hanging fruit. But they loved going to Chinatown,” she said. “If you ask them what their favorite country is that we visited. They're like, ‘oh China.’”Along the way, they sample international cuisine.“I think it's hitting a lot of the sort of social, emotional pieces about why we learn about the world and why we study other people and other cultures,” said Gilbertsen. And of course they take a selfie to document each trip.Lynn’s husband, Joe Troutman, an elementary visual arts teacher says absent actual travel, this is an activity that any family can do anywhere.“I think this is our eighth or ninth country and our study so far,” said Troutman. “So, it's been quite a journey in its own right.”Gilbertsen has posted their international adventures online and is getting inundated with requests to share her ideas. Right now, she’s working on a curriculum and PDF guide to virtual travel. Her ultimate goal is to help her children become good citizens of the world.“I want them to have a broader understanding of the world younger. I think you have a lot of catching up to do if you're an adult and you're finally figuring out that the world is really big.” 2614

CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) — NASA announced partnerships Tuesday, including one with Carlsbad business Vulcan Wireless, to advance Moon and Mars technology.Thirteen U.S. companies will work with NASA to fast-track "space technologies and help maintain American leadership in space." You may know the name Vulcan Wireless because their transceivers about the size of your hand are helping NASA map the universe. "Of course we're the communication link so the images that come in they get transmitted through our radio waves," Kevin Lynaugh, Founder of Vulcan Wireless, said.ASTERIA launched in 2017, "ASTERIA (Arcsecond Space Telescope Enabling Research in Astrophysics) is a technology demonstration and opportunistic science mission to conduct astrophysical measurements using a CubeSat." Basically the telescope uses light to map stars and planets. That was their biggest project to date. Now NASA hopes their partnership will help increase connectivity for deeper space missions."When you have a spacecraft floating out there, if you don't have a data link it's a brick right? So we provide the communications," Lynaugh explained it's similar to how your Wifi modem works at home.In Vulcan Wireless's Lab, you'll find the same technology NASA uses."When we close this thing down and we lock it we're able to pump all the air out of it so we can simulate space environment with this," Lynaugh said. They have a machine that simulates heat, extreme vibrations, a vacuum among other equipment. All this to ensure their equipment is prepared for space. The transceiver is equipped with rechargeable batteries, fueled by solar panels, and compact, making it ideal for NASA, military and commercial projects. Lynaugh launched Vulcan Wireless in 1993. His passion was instilled by his father throughout his youth. He still remembers how his dad built a TV in the living room like it was yesterday. The next step Lynaugh sees is increasing connectivity around the globe, a little closer to home, but still while using space technology. 2033
