LOS ANGELES (KGTV) - A Los Angeles Fire Department swift water rescue team made a daring rescue in fast-moving water Wednesday. A man was stranded in the Los Angeles River at Atwater Village as a storm moved through, creating rapids in the normally driver riverbed. The firefighter who first made it to the man in a boat had to turn back due to the difficult position. A rescue swimmer joined the boat pilot and saved the man. The man was evaluated by paramedics. There was no immediate word on his condition. 517

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Lawyers for the family of a black man killed by police in a busy Southern California parking lot said Monday that an autopsy found he was shot 10 times and died from choking on his own blood. The autopsy concluded that 26-year-old Diante Yarber died of asphyxiation and that had he been given medical treatment, he would have had a chance at surviving his wounds, attorney S. Lee Merritt said at a news conference. The autopsy was conducted by a private medical examiner at Merritt's request. An autopsy by San Bernardino County authorities has not been released and it's unclear whether it's been finished.Merritt, who is planning on filing a civil rights lawsuit in the case this week, said the private autopsy found that Yarber had wounds to his chest, back and arms and that he wasn't given medical treatment for "a great deal of time.""The injuries are consistent with defensive wounds ... as he was shielding himself and trying to escape the onslaught of bullets," Merritt said.Merritt did not respond to a message seeking a copy of the autopsy report. Barstow police officers fatally shot Yarber on April 5 in a Walmart parking lot in the Mojave Desert city, about halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. At the time police said Yarber reversed into a police car, then accelerated toward officers and hit a second police car, prompting officers to fire. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, which is investigating the shooting, has said Barstow officers responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle believed Yarber was wanted for a crime involving a stolen car.Merritt disputes the account of the shooting by police, saying Yarber's car was barely moving. Grainy cellphone footage of the shooting shows officers fired their weapons at least a couple dozen times but doesn't capture the full incident.Barstow police didn't respond to requests for comment Monday and denied a request by The Associated Press for body cam footage of the shooting. It's unclear whether body cameras recorded the shooting, but Barstow police have been equipped with the devices since 2014.Police also haven't released the names of the officers involved. There were three others in the car with Yarber, a father of three, when police tried to stop him.His girlfriend was shot in the leg and abdomen in the backseat, while Yarber's brother jumped out of the car and his cousin wasn't hit."These officers are opening fire into a car with other passengers and in a Walmart parking lot in broad daylight with people walking all over the place that could have also been struck," said Dale Galipo, an attorney representing Yarber's girlfriend and cousin."It's obviously a totally excessive shooting."Yarber's brother also told attorneys that he heard one officer shout a racial slur before the shooting.Sharon Brunner, who represents Yarber's girlfriend, said she and the other lawyers involved have been unable to find another witness to corroborate that claim. 2978

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Robert Forster, the handsome and omnipresent character actor who got a career resurgence and Oscar nomination for playing bail bondsman Max Cherry in "Jackie Brown," died Friday. He was 78.Publicist Kathie Berlin said Forster died of brain cancer following a brief illness. He was at home in Los Angeles, surrounded by family, including his four children and partner Denise Grayson.Condolences poured in Friday night on social media.Bryan Cranston called Forster a "lovely man and a consummate actor" in a tweet. The two met on the 1980 film "Alligator" and then worked together again on the television show "Breaking Bad" and its spinoff film, "El Camino," which launched Friday on Netflix."I never forgot how kind and generous he was to a young kid just starting out in Hollywood," Cranston wrote. His "Jackie Brown" co-star Samuel L. Jackson tweeted that Forster was "truly a class act/Actor!!"A native of Rochester, New York, Forster quite literally stumbled into acting when in college, intending to be a lawyer, he followed a fellow female student he was trying to talk to into an auditorium where "Bye Bye Birdie" auditions were being held. He would be cast in that show, that fellow student would become his wife with whom he had three daughters, and it would start him on a new trajectory as an actor.A fortuitous role in the 1965 Broadway production "Mrs. Dally Has a Lover" put him on the radar of Darryl Zanuck, who signed him to a studio contract. He would soon make his film debut in the 1967 John Huston film "Reflections in a Golden Eye," which starred Marlon Brando and Elizabeth Taylor.Forster would go on to star in Haskell Wexler's documentary-style Chicago classic "Medium Cool" and the detective television series "Banyon." It was an early high point that he would later say was the beginning of a "27-year slump."He worked consistently throughout the 1970s and 1980s in mostly forgettable B-movies — ultimately appearing in over 100 films, many out of necessity."I had four kids, I took any job I could get," he said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune last year. "Every time it reached a lower level I thought I could tolerate, it dropped some more, and then some more. Near the end, I had no agent, no manager, no lawyer, no nothing. I was taking whatever fell through the cracks."It was Quentin Tarantino's 1997 film "Jackie Brown" that put him back on the map. Tarantino created the role of Max Cherry with Forster in mind — the actor had unsuccessfully auditioned for a part in "Reservoir Dogs," but the director promised not to forget him.In an interview with Fandor last year, Forster recalled that when presented with the script for "Jackie Brown," he told Tarantino, "I'm sure they're not going to let you hire me."Tarantino replied: "I hire anybody I want.""And that's when I realized I was going to get another shot at a career," Forster said. "He gave me a career back and the last 14 years have been fabulous."The performance opposite Pam Grier became one of the more heartwarming Hollywood comeback stories, earning him his first and only Academy Award nomination. He ultimately lost the golden statuette to Robin Williams, who won that year for "Good Will Hunting."After "Jackie Brown," he worked consistently and at a decidedly higher level than during the "slump," appearing in films like David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive," ''Me, Myself and Irene," ''The Descendants," ''Olympus Has Fallen," and "What They Had," and in television shows like "Breaking Bad" and the "Twin Peaks" revival. He said he loved trying out comedy as Tim Allen's father in "Last Man Standing."He'll also appear later this year in the Steven Spielberg-produced Apple+ series "Amazing Stories."Even in his down days, Forster always considered himself lucky."You learn to take whatever jobs there are and make the best you can out of whatever you've got. And anyone in any walk of life, if they can figure that out, has a lot better finish than those who cannot stand to take a picture that doesn't pay you as much or isn't as good as the last one," he told IndieWire in 2011. "Attitude is everything."Forster is survived by his four children, four grandchildren and Grayson, his partner of 16 years. 4241

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced that the government is putting all of England under a monthlong lockdown next week after being warned that a resurgent coronavirus outbreak will overwhelm hospitals in weeks without tough action. Johnson said in a televised news conference night that the new measures will begin Thursday and last until Dec. 2. Bars and restaurants can only offer take-out, the Associated Press reported. The AP added that haircuts to foreign holidays must be put on hold once again.Non-essential shops must close and people will only be able to leave home for a shortlist of reasons. Unlike during the U.K.'s first lockdown, schools, universities and manufacturing businesses will stay open. According to a press release by the English Football League (EFL), "elite sport will be able to continue and EFL competitions will therefore remain as currently scheduled (in both England and Wales)" during the lockdown."Professional football has implemented some of the most stringent, robust and regularly reviewed protocols since the restart in June 2020 and our medical experts’ advice remains in place to fully adhere to these measures which are specifically designed to mitigate against the spread of the virus," EFL officials said in the release. "The health, safety, and well-being of players and Club staff throughout the pandemic have been our first priority and this will continue as we enter this next period of lockdown and beyond. In addition, we acknowledge the Government’s national efforts in tackling this outbreak and would hope that during this next phase of the crisis, our national sport, negatively affected by COVID-19 like many other industries, can continue to provide some form of welcome distraction and give people in our communities up and down the country a sense of normality in very challenging times."The U.K. reported more than 21,900 new confirmed virus cases on Saturday, bringing the country's total since the start of the pandemic to over 1 million. 2036
