SAN FRANCISCO, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- Microsoft's cloud-based software Microsoft Office 365 on Wednesday experienced its first major outage since its introduction in late June."At approximately 11:30 a.m. PDT, Microsoft became aware of a networking issue affecting customers of some Microsoft services hosted out of one of our North American data centers," said Steven Gerri, general manager for Microsoft Global Foundation Services, in a statement"We apologize for the inconvenience that Office 365 outage has caused today. We are working on resolving the issue," the software giant said via Twitter.Outages were reported in Chicago, Denver and New York City among other locations. According to tweets from affected users, they were unable to access their email and managers were unable to manage accounts.The outage lasted approximately five hours and services have been restored for the moment.According to Microsoft service-level agreement, Microsoft guarantees a 99.9 percent level of uptime. If it fails to reach 99.9 percent uptime, users are eligible for 25 percent service credit.As more industry giants try to entice users to move to the "cloud," a term refers to the management and provision of applications and data over the Internet, the downtime again reminds cloud computing users that they must prepare to deal with outages and rethink their dependency on the service, analysts said.Amazon has suffered two major cloud outages earlier this month and back in April, impacting some of its high-profile users like movie streaming service Netflix and location-based social networking Foursquare.Analysts recommend cloud users to store data with multiple service providers to minimize the risk and limit their dependency on cloud services for business-critical processes.Available in 40 countries and regions since June 28, Office 365, which Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said is "where Microsoft office meets the cloud," combines Microsoft Office, SharePoint Online, Exchange Online and Lync Online into a single cloud-based package for business users.

SINGAPORE, July 3 (Xinhua) -- The over 60 nursing homes in Singapore, especially those run by voluntary welfare organizations, are facing a bed crunch, local daily Straits Times reported on Sunday.The newspaper found in a check with 20 homes that more than half of the nursing homes were running at full or almost full capacity. Homes run by voluntary welfare organizations, where there are subsidized beds, have long waiting lists.The average waiting time for a bed in nursing homes run by voluntary welfare organizations rose from 50 days in 2008 to about 60 days early last year, the newspaper said.It is easier to get a bed in a privately run home, though only slightly and if you can afford it. Econ Healthcare Group, which runs eight nursing homes in Singapore, said the occupancy rate is 99 percent and it has waiting lists of up to 20 people at some branches.Demand for nursing homes in the city state can only grow given the aging population. BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhuanet) – The pressure of modern society is taking a toll on sexual satisfaction, experts say following the release of an online survey.About 34 percent of people polled in the survey said that they are unsatisfied with their sex lives, with 6.5 percent "very unsatisfied".Another 32 percent condemned their sex lives as "just so-so".The survey interviewed more than 3,000 people, aged between 15 and 55, with men accounting for 74 percent of the interviewees.It was conducted by the China Population Communication Center and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences from May 1 to June 20. The survey did not give a margin of error.Only 23 percent of respondents said that they are "satisfied" with their sex lives, with 3.6 percent "very satisfied", according to the survey.But women seem to have a higher rate of satisfaction than men, with only 26 percent saying they are unsatisfied. The rate for men is 42 percent.The rate of sexual satisfaction among Chinese people is below the global average of 44 percent, according to an earlier survey by Durex. The 2007 Durex Global Sexual Wellbeing Survey questioned more than 26,000 people in 26 countries about all aspects of their sex lives - including satisfaction levels.Jiang Hui, president-elect of the Chinese Society of Andrology, attributed the lower rate of sexual satisfaction among Chinese people to rapid economic growth, which inevitably increases work and social pressure.Health problems associated with a modern lifestyle, such as diabetes and hypertension, are also to blame, he said.Jiang said his department of andrology used to receive about 10 patients a day 10 years ago. LOS ANGELES, July 3 (Xinhua) -- Warming of the ocean's subsurface layers will melt underwater portions of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets faster than previously thought, increasing the sea level more than already projected, a new study suggests.The subsurface ocean layers surrounding the polar ice sheets will warm substantially as global warming progresses, according to the study led by researchers from the University of Arizona (UA).In addition to being exposed to warming air, underwater portions of the polar ice sheets and glaciers will be bathed in warming seawater, said the study appearing on the website of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) on Sunday.The research, based on 19 state-of-the-art climate models, proposes a new mechanism by which global warming will accelerate the melting of the great ice sheets during this century and the next."To my knowledge, this study is the first to quantify and compare future ocean warming around the Greenland and the Antarctic ice sheets using an ensemble of models," said lead author Jianjun Yin, a UA assistant professor of geosciences.According to the study, the subsurface ocean along the Greenland coast could increase as much as 3.6 F (2 C) by 2100.Most previous research has focused on how increases in atmospheric temperatures would affect the ice sheets, he said."Ocean warming is very important compared to atmospheric warming because water has a much larger heat capacity than air," Yin said. "If you put an ice cube in a warm room, it will melt in several hours. But if you put an ice cube in a cup of warm water, it will disappear in just minutes."Given a mid-level increase in greenhouse gases, the researchers found the ocean layer about 650 to 1,650 feet (200 to 500 meters) below the surface would warm, on average, about 1.8 F (1 C) by 2100. Along the Greenland coast, that layer would warm twice as much, but along Antarctica would warm less, only 0.9 F (0.5 C)."No one has noticed this discrepancy before -- that the subsurface oceans surrounding Greenland and Antarctica warm very differently," Yin said.Part of the warming in the North comes from the Gulf Stream carrying warm subtropical waters north. By contrast, the Antarctic Circumpolar Current blocks some of the subtropical warmth from entering the Antarctic's coastal waters.Even so, the Antarctic ice sheet will be bathed in warming waters, according to the study.This paper adds to the evidence that sea level would rise by the end of this century by around one meter and a good deal more in succeeding centuries, the study noted.The study, "Different Magnitudes of Projected Subsurface Ocean Warming Around Greenland and Antarctica," is scheduled for the upcoming edition of Nature Geoscience later this month.
