SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The Del Mar Thoroughbred Club announced new and enhanced safety protocols for horses and jockeys Wednesday which will be in effect for the Del Mar race track's 80th racing season which begins July 17.The initiatives include a mandate for a five-person review panel to analyze each horse's racing, medical and training history to ensure each horse is safe to race and a ban on the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication fewer than 48 hours before a race or a workout. After remaking its dirt track with the help of race track consultant Dennis Moore and implementing additional safety measures like adding a radiology and ultrasound facility along the track's backstretch, only five horses died during Del Mar's 2017 season and six during its 2018 season.After instituting the changes, Del Mar has been rated one of the safest horse racing venues in the U.S., tallying only 0.79 horse deaths per 1,000 starts last year, according to the Jockey Club Equine Injury Database. Every seven years, NIH competitively renews its funding of the HIV clinical trials networks operating in the United States and internationally.During the current application process, the UC San Diego AntiViral Research Center, University of Colorado Hospital, Houston AIDS Research Team and Durban International clinical research sites were chosen to work collaboratively on research priorities for the NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases HIV/AIDS Adult Therapeutics Clinical Trials Network.The Chennai Antiviral Research and Treatment Center, University of Southern California and University of Miami clinical research sites were also chosen to join UCSD to serve as qualified reserve or protocol-specific sites as needed for future clinical trials."UC San Diego has helped shape HIV/AIDS research and treatment through innovative research since the inception of the adult and pediatric therapeutic clinical trials networks in 1986," said principal investigator Dr. Constance A. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego County arson investigators were called to the scene of a commercial structure fire today in Spring Valley, authorities said.The fire began at 8:02 a.m. at a structure in the 300 block of Elkelton Place, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department reported.The fire was put out by San Miguel Fire District firefighters shortly afterward. The fire was isolated to the commercial structure, sheriff's officials said.No injuries were reported. Roads were closed at Paradise Valley Road and Elkelton Place, as well as Paradise Valley Road and Worthington Street, officials said. 607
