SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego craft brewery hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic is taking the rare step of opening a restaurant, despite the region going into the state's most restrictive purple tier.Dennis O’Connor says the pandemic hurt Thorne Brewing Company the moment the first shut down kicked in back in March.“It wasn't so much that nobody was coming in, but you also lost all those bars and restaurants that were buying your product,” said O’Connor, who co-founded the brewery in 2012.Not to mention, the price of cans increased, hitting the craft brewer’s distribution.Thorne operates three locations in San Diego County, at least one of which will likely have to shut down as the region enters the most restrictive purple tier, outlawing indoor dining. The restrictions take effect midnight Saturday, to help stop the increased spread of the coronavirus. “We are nowhere near thriving,” O’Connor said. “It’s survival at best.”But O’Connor has a new tool for survival.Connected to Thorne’s Barrio Logan location is a new full service distillery and wood-fired pizza restaurant the brewery finished in march, but never opened. O’Connor says it was a multimillion-dollar project that took years.“It was pretty much just a big blank warehouse,” he said. While the interior can't open, Thorne is converting the restaurant’s outdoor patio into its own barbecue eatery, with a bar in the back called Sideyard Barbecue by Hot Mess (the name of the adjacent pizza restaurant) . It'll seat 84 people and opens to the public Nov. 19.“If outdoor is the new norm then let's do an outdoor and let’s kick (butt) on it,” O’Connor said. “Let's not put it in the street, let’s not put it in a barn tent, let's do something special. So that's what this is.”O’Connor said he hopes the barbecue can help get Thorne and its now-limited staff through the pandemic. 1861

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Mesa College professor has pulled thousands of World War II-era letters out of the archives at San Diego State University and written a new book highlighting the Aztecs' contributions to the war effort."No Forgotten Fronts" tells the story of Dr. Loren Post, a professor at SDSU during the war. He asked students to write him letters so he could keep in touch. He then took their letters and created "The Aztec News Letter" so students and families could keep in touch with each other during the war."The letters are very compelling," said Lisa Shapiro, who wrote the book. "They're inspirational and emotional."As a professor at Mesa College, Shapiro wanted a way to understand what some of her Veteran students had gone through. She heard about the letters and started reading them."Once I started, I couldn't stop," she said. "Little by little, what happens is you start to find the stories."Shapiro decided to turn those stories into a book, so more people could learn about the contributions SDSU students made during the war."That was the promise that Dr. Post made," she said. "No one would ever be forgotten."Shapiro said the newsletters that Dr. Post wrote became must-reads around campus. Over time they evolved from simple type-written pages to full-fledged publications."He didn't sugar-coat things," said Shapiro, noting that the newsletters had information about who had died, went missing or been injured. But they also had good news from campus to keep the soldiers connected to their home."By taking their words and sending them back out and showing them they weren't forgotten, this one professor made such an incredible difference in the lives of his students."Shapiro also noted that, through the letters, you get an excellent history of the entire war."You have eyewitness accounts of battles, this is what it feels like to jump out of an airplane. And you have these very touching, moving letters where people talk about grief."The book, "No Forgotten Fronts," is published by the Naval Institute Press and is available online and in stores around San Diego. You can find more information about it here. 2159

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A pregnant San Diego County woman found a shocking discovery in her baby’s ultrasound picture: what appears to be a photo of her late father kissing her unborn daughter. Shantel Carrillo, who’s five and a half months pregnant with her second child, had the medical exam Monday at Sharp Grossmont Hospital. She didn’t expect the photograph to go viral. “I didn’t see it; I just posted the original picture online,” said Carrillo. Friends quickly pointed out the ultrasound image resembled a picture of Carrillo’s father Charles, who died in 2016, holding Carrillo’s oldest daughter Myree. RELATED: Wild turkeys stop traffic in North San Diego County“How crazy, right,” asked Carrillo. “Looks like there’s an angel giving your baby a kiss on the lips,” Carrillo said her friends told her. Carrillo showed the photo to her stepmother who “broke down, freaking out crying.” For Carrillo, the idea her late father would show love to her child fits his character. “My dad was obsessed with my daughter,” said Carrillo. She added her father was always loud but “he would melt” when he was around Myree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A record number of voters have already cast their ballots in San Diego County. Registrar Michael Vu said of the 1.92 million voters in the county, 1,081,727 already voted as of Sunday. The Registrar of Voters pushed for early voting in 2020 to avoid crowds on election days and Vu said that hope has been met.“I’ve never seen numbers like this in advance of Election Day before,” said Vu.He said that they’re expecting between 80% and 85% turnout this year. With two more days to cast ballots, they’re not sure what method the remaining voters will use to vote. He added that in the 2016 presidential election, close to 500,000 people voted in person on Election Day, and it’s possible that many could still vote in person Tuesday, meaning the traditional Election Day lines could still be seen.“Hundreds of thousands of individuals we’re still expecting to vote and the question is will they vote with their mail ballot or will they vote in person,” said Vu.He said the fate of the next couple of days are in the hands of the voters and how they decide to vote.Vu added that if and when people vote, they’re encouraged to go to their designated super poll location. There are 235 super polls across the county. Residents can locate their polling place online here. Voters can also check the back of their sample ballots and voter information pamphlets for assigned polling places.Monday, super poll locations are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then Tuesday, polls are open 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Election Day. People have to be in line by 8 p.m. to be able to vote in person Tuesday, or mail has to be postmarked by Tuesday to count. 1650
