FUZHOU, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- China has begun efforts to build the largest regional cooperation platform, covering a geographical area that produces around one-third of the country's GDP.As key to this effort, on Friday, the 6th Pan Pearl River Delta (PPRD) Regional Cooperation and Development Forum opened in Fuzhou, capital of southeast China's Fujian Province.The forum, scheduled to run from Aug. 27-31, is celebrated the theme of "deepening cooperation and seeking common development". It has attracted more than 10,000 participants, including officials, entrepreneurs and celebrities from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions, as well as Taiwan.The forum, begun in 2004, seeks to stimulate the economy within the pan-Pearl River Delta region, which covers Hainan, Yunnan, Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi, as well as Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions.This move would help enhance regional cooperation, encourage labor mobility and accelerate the relocation of industry from China's well-off coastal region to the comparatively underdeveloped western region, said Xu Shangwu, secretary general of the Organizing Committee of the forum.This would improve the comprehensive economic strength and global competitiveness of the entire region, he said.During the previous five PPRD forums, more than 14,000 cooperative projects have been agreed, with their total investments exceeding 1.8 trillion yuan (264.71 billion U.S. dollars), according to government statistics.The GDP of the nine provincial regions in the Chinese mainland totaled 10.5 trillion yuan last year, up 11.8 percent from one year earlier. The proposals included creating a stronger voice for gender equality that should be heard by all people, especially male decision makers, she said. BEIJING, Aug. 28 (Xinhua) -- China's restrictions on rare earth industry will assist in protecting the environment, Chinese Commerce Minister Chen Deming said here Saturday."Mass-extraction of rare earth will cause great damage to the environment, that's why China has tightened controls over rare earth production, exploration and trade, " Chen told media during the third China-Japan high-level economic dialogue.He said what China had done was also consistent with the rules of the World Trade Organization.China is the largest producer of rare earth elements, which are used in hybrid car motors, computer hardware and components for high-tech products.Chen said the restriction policy would also have an adverse impact on the Chinese market, where parts for Japanese products were assembled.He stressed that in order to protect the country's environment, China had no choice but to take such measures.During the dialogue, Chen also called on Japan to ease high technology export controls to China and simplify visa procedures for Chinese business people.Japan had expressed concerns over China's export of mineral resources, independent innovation systems and information security policies during the meetings.Chen said, through the dialogue, that the two sides had enhanced communications and increased mutual understanding over these issues.

BEIJING, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) -- A public supervision scheme for China's prosecutors will be rolled out nationwide next month, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader said Tuesday.A pilot public supervisor scheme, which started six years ago, had proved effective in supervising judicial departments, said Zhou Yongkang, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, at a meeting in Beijing.From next month, the measure would be formally adopted nationwide, he said.More work should be done to improve the selection and management of public supervisors and to draft regulations, he said.Government departments, non-governmental organizations, state-owned enterprises and communities could nominate members of the public as supervisors to the procuratorates.The public supervisors would give opinions to procuratorates when prosecutors decided to drop corruption charges, or when a suspect in the corruption case complained about the arrest.They could also oversee the actions of prosecutors, to prevent illegal detentions, obtaining confessions through violence and torture, and illegal collection of evidence.A report by the Supreme People's Procuratorate to the National People's Congress in March 2008 said about 86 percent of procuratorates had taken part in the trial.At the meeting, Zhou admitted that the country still faced a tough task in judicial reform.The government would work out new policies to attract more prosecutors and judges to work in local judicial departments, he said.

GUANGZHOU, Oct. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao lit the Asian Games torch from a specially designed cauldron in Beijing's Temple of Heaven Tuesday morning, marking the official start of the month-long relay for the 16th Asian Games.The torch relay will cover Beijing, Harbin, Changchun, Shandong's Haiyang, and 21 cities in southern Guangdong Province before arriving at the Asian Games opening ceremony in Guangzhou on November 12.Guangzhou, capital city of Guangdong, has been preparing itself for the games for the past six years, after it won the bid to host the Games in July 2004.The construction of the venues and the Asian Games Village has been completed.
