SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This weekend will be a show for San Diego stargazers.The Perseid meteor shower is expected to bring 60-70 meteors careening across the night sky every hour between Aug. 11-13. But the best times to view the shower will be overnight Aug. 12.One of the only things standing in your way is light pollution. Wherever you head, you'll want to avoid too much light pollution or possibly have a telescope ready to go.MORE: How to watch the best celestial show of the year in San DiegoHere are some areas around San Diego County to check out the Perseid shower. Some spots are far removed from the city, like in Julian or Anza-Borrego, while others are closer:Jess Martin Park (Julian): Head up to Julian this weekend to catch the meteor shower and also Julian's Natural Wonderfest.Blair Valley Campground (Anza-Borrego): There's really no bad spot in Anza-Borrego for stargazing. Its distance from San Diego makes it prime for some great viewing.Palomar Observatory: Palomar Mountain is the site of an observatory, so there's no wonder why the area is great for catching the stars.Laguna Campground: Mount Laguna has long been an area for camping and an escape from the city for San Diegans. While the Mount Laguna Observatory has the power to look deep into the galaxy, you'll have to bring your own gear at the campground to view the dark skies.Torrey Pines State Reserve: Torrey Pines State Reserve can provide some surprising star gazing despite being as close to highways as it is. The glider port has been a spot for those who don't want to make the hours-long trek east.Blue Sky Ecological Reserve: Poway's Blue Sky park is a great spot close to the county and away from too many bright lights for star gazing.Fleet Science Center (Balboa Park): Yes, Balboa Park is close to the city lights, but with some telescopic power, you can still catch some great sights like planets and bright stars.Mt. Helix Park: Mount Helix is another good option for those not wanting to drive too far away.Otay Lakes County Park: Otay Lakes park is another close option where local star gazers have had success staring into the night sky.Soledad Mountain: Another option close to home. Set your gaze or telescope in the right direction and Soledad Mountain is a great spot to star gaze.San Elijo Park: Head up to North County and catch some star-gazing at San Elijo Park. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This isn't the first time the idea of an aerial tram in San Diego has been floated around. But it is the first time the idea of one from the airport has been raised.A feasibility study, completed by engineering firm WSP USA, proposed a "skyway" to connect San Diego International Airport to the convention center could be built with current aerial cableway technology.The study suggests the aerial cableway "has the potential to enhance mobility within the study area." The transit system could include intermediate stations at Santa Fe Depot, Seaport Village, the Embarcadero, and in the Marina District.Riders would also be able to connect to MTS, Coaster, and Amtrak stations, the study says.The skyway would cost about 0 million to 0 million to construct and about million to million to operate every year, the study says.The study adds the skyway could make 1.1 million and 1.6 million trips a year, or about 3,600 to 4,900 trips a day. An aerial cableway could transport about 2,400 people per hour per direction, with cabins holding eight to 12 people, according to the study.In the study, the skyway begins at the Gaslamp Quarter trolley station near Harbor Dr. and 5th Ave., and roughly follow Harbor Dr., Kettner Blvd., Broadway, and Harbor Dr. again to the airport, ultimately ending at passenger terminals. IS IT POSSIBLE?While the study determined a skyway is feasible, it did not say whether it would be the best method for mobility to alleviate traffic between the airport and downtown.A system of this kind would also be a first in the U.S. New York and Oregon are both home to point-to-point aerial cableways: the Portland Aerial Tram and Roosevelt Island Tram. But a system with intermediate stops hasn't been implemented in the U.S.Large aerial systems already exist in South America, Europe, and Asia. Many of those systems make intermediate stops and help with transportation through topographically challenging areas, the study says.It's not the first time an aerial method of public transportation has been suggested in San Diego. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The place where an 87-year-old woman was hit and killed by a FedEx truck, is now covered with candles, flowers, and messages from loved ones.Mary Francel was a mother to eight and grandmother to dozens more.She was walking back from church and crossing a driveway on Balboa Avenue near Mount Albertine Avenue when the FedEx truck hit her. The driver immediately stopped after the crash."She was very much well-loved and she put all of us first at all times, it was never about her," said Joey Villegas, one of Francel's grandchildren. "I wrote her and told her thank you, for how much she taught us. Me and my brother, she basically helped raise us when we were young."Villegas says his grandma loved bingo, drove a big truck and was incredibly devoted to her family and friends.At this time the driver has not been arrested or cited for the accident.   890

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego Department of Agriculture is warning residents not to open unsolicited packets of seeds some people reported receiving from China.The department says it has taken 58 calls from people reporting receiving the seeds as of Wednesday afternoon and warns anyone who receives a package to not plant the seeds or throw them away. “The main concern with these seeds is that they were mislabeled and went through customs without an inspection. Seed from other countries might have pests or diseases that don’t exist here. The County Department of Agriculture, Weights and Measures is constantly looking for invasive pests which can be weeds, insects, or diseases. They can cause a lot of harm and we work hard to eliminate them.”RELATED: Mysterious seeds sent from China to US mailboxesThe department says unopened seed packets should be dropped off at drop boxes at 151 E. Carmel St, San Marcos 92128 or 9325 Hazard Way, San Diego 92123 address. They will then be sent to the USDA for analysis.Anyone unable to drop off the seeds should call 760-752-4700.Kimberly Pierce-Nolan is just one of the San Diego County residents to receive the seeds. She said she didn't think anything of it when it arrived at her Imperial Beach home a few weeks ago."I said 'I don’t remember ordering and I thought maybe I did, or maybe it was a free gift or something,'" she said.She put the package aside until recently, when posts and warnings about the seeds started circulating. She said she's happy she didn't throw it away or plant them, but is nervous that her name, address and phone number were all on the package.Reports of unidentified seeds from China have been popping up across the country. All 50 states have now issued warnings about the packages. The department believes it is all part of a “brushing” scam used to boost ratings for online vendors. The packaging label ranges from jewelry to "handmade flowers," and the seeds on the inside vary in size and shape.“At this time, we don’t have any evidence indicating this is something other than a ‘brushing scam,’ where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales. USDA is currently collecting seed packages from recipients and will test their contents and determine if they contain anything that could be of concern to U.S. agriculture or the environment,” the USDA said.Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China's foreign ministry, said at a briefing on Tuesday that the address labels were forged and that China Post has asked USPS to send those packages to China for investigation. 2618

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The Port of San Diego announced Wednesday they've selected a developer for a new pod hotel concept near San Diego Bay.STAY OPEN was chosen to develop and operate the new low-cost, pod-style hotel concept that would be located on Pacific Highway between the Port's administration building and Palm Street.The concept envisions 33 rooms with eight to 12 pods per room. Each pod would include a single-occupancy bed, storage locker, power supply, ventilation control, privacy screen, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms would share one bathroom with shower facilities. And space on the hotel's rooftop would be reserved for a restaurant, bar, and outdoor seating open to the public.An exact price for an overnight stay in a pod was not released, but STAY OPEN partner JUCY Snooze offers the pod rentals in New Zealand starting at about per night.The goal behind to concept is to offer an inexpensive for travelers, similar to a hostel.
