SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- As San Diegans come to grips with the violence that unfolded in a Paradise Hills home, leaving a mother and her young boys dead, District Attorney Summer Stephan tells 10News it is a problem that San Diego is becoming too familiar with.“Domestic violence remains the number one killer of women in the United States and right here in San Diego,” said Stephan.She revealed the County of San Diego had 18 murders last year related to domestic violence.RELATED: Resources available to domestic violence victimsStephan said a third of those murders involved people who had active restraining orders.“We want victims to know that a restraining order is a piece of paper and that it alone is not going to protect the victim,” she said.According to Stephan, the first 72 hours after filing a restraining order are the most vulnerable for retaliation and victims need to have a plan in place.RELATED: Document details chilling text messages sent to woman killed in Paradise Hills murder-suicide“In the first 72 hours after somebody obtains a restraining order the risk is heightened,” she said. “There is almost an escalation of risk.”One important piece of advice for victims after filing a restraining order, is to leave the home the offender knows of.“What we say is for a victim to get a restraining order, but only after there has been a safety plan and there has been a threat assessment by professionals.”Across the county, there are a number of resources available to help put a plan together.“There's a family justice center run by the City Attorney Mara Elliott, there's a center for community solutions with a 24 hour number,” she said.More resources are also listed on the DA’s website https://www.sdcda.org/helping/domestic-violence.html 1769

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Creating a future has its hurdles, and can be especially tricky for people facing poverty or with criminal backgrounds. A San Diego organization is making sure the future is within reach. “I was on probation… I had to go to sober living to get my life right,” said Anthony Johnson. Johnson is a recent graduate of Second Chance, an organization in Encanto that helps kids and adults who have criminal backgrounds or are facing poverty get back on the right track through their programs and job training. “They changed my life," said Johnson. Covering the walls of the classrooms at Second Chance are notes illustrate the hope and want students have for a better future. “Our mission statement starts with the word disrupt. If we can break the past now, then the future has a chance to come into that person’s life,” said Robert Coleman.Coleman is the President and CEO of Second Chance and has been helping people create a future where they can provide for themselves and their families. “Isn’t it better to have people in our community who have hope and have a sense of direction and career and housing and not a journey of crime? We give them a future, and we are actually making our community a safer place,” said Coleman.Coleman’s dedication to the people in Encanto and Southeast San Diego, along with the gratitude expressed by his students and colleagues, is why we have selected Robert Coleman as our 10News Leadership Award recipient. “Everyone has hope. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Bernie Sanders is showing his support for dozens of hotel workers on strike over their pay and benefits. The former presidential candidate stood alongside protestors at The Westin Hotel on Friday. “Nobody wants to do this. We would all like to work right now,” says employee Arturo Ramirez.Ramirez has been working at The Westin Hotel since February. With the high cost of living in San Diego, Ramirez says its sometimes hard to pay the bills.“My mother and I, we work at the same hotel. We’re struggling to pay ,100 in rent," Ramirez says.Bernie Sanders took the stage to show his support to workers during his visit to San Diego.“We’re saying to Marriott who owns Westin, we’re saying to every corporation in this country who make billions of dollars in profit, pay your workers a living wage," Sanders said to a crowd of protesters.Employees are asking for a raise of at least an hour and a chance to save for their retirement.“It’s a billion dollar company that needs to pay the workers a living wage so they can live in the city of San Diego," says Bridgett Browning, President of Unite Here Union. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Construction crews have started on about 4.5 miles of bikeways and safety improvements stretching from downtown to Hillcrest.The projects include separated and buffered bikeways on Fourth and Fifth Avenues, safety improvements such as lighting, upgraded landscaping, and improved crosswalks for people with disabilities and pedestrians.In all, the project will cost .2 million and cross from B St. in downtown, through Bankers Hill, and to Washington St. in Hillcrest."This project will make it safer and easier for people to walk and bike along commonly traveled streets to visit local businesses and reach destinations such as Downtown San Diego, Balboa Park, and Hillcrest," said SANDAG Vice Chair and Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. "San Diegans are walking and biking more during the pandemic and this project will provide safe and convenient options for people to continue to choose active transportation, even when the health crisis is far behind us."The new bikeways are part of the Uptown Bikeways effort proposed in 2012, meant to connect Uptown, Old Town, Mission Valley, Downtown San Diego, North Park, and Balboa Park. SANDAG says community members worried about the potential loss of parking due to the project worked with officials to find solutions, and ultimately were able to provide a surplus of parking.The agency adds that it has modified construction schedules to best minimize its impact on businesses currently using temporary outdoor setups to operate under coronavirus restrictions along Fourth and Fifth Avenues.Construction on the project is expected to be finished in 2022. During construction, nearby residents and businesses can expect intermittent lane closures, parking restrictions, construction noise, and dust. Most work will be completed Monday through Friday, holidays excluded, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., and occasionally on Saturdays. 1910

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Dangerously hot temperatures continue to scorch San Diego County's inland areas and deserts. Many of those areas hit peak temperatures well into the triple digits. Many inland residents chose to spend the day on the coast to escape the blistering heat.They say home is where the heart is. But for Peggy Dudenhoeffer, home is where the heat is. The Fallbrook resident drove 50 miles south Saturday, to enjoy the day in Bankers Hill, where it was about 15 degrees cooler."We feel like we're on vacation!" she said. "I like it better out here. We're lucky to be in San Diego to be able to sit outdoors in the summertime."She and her friend were at Barrio Star restaurant, which moved its operations all outdoors because of COVID-19 restrictions. But the restaurant was not going to let the heatwave turn customers away. They installed misters onto their rooftop overflow area."Right now, with this weather, it couldn't be better," Barrio Star General Manager, Michael Simpson, said. "Some nice mist, some nice picnic tables, and some nice margaritas!"Some preferred being closer to natural water. ABC 10News met professional skater, Lance Lynn, at Mission Beach."Inland, it's crazy hot," Lynn said. "Yesterday, I had to go to Ocean Beach just to escape the heat."Lynn said there was no way he could practice his skills back near his inland area home. With the ocean breeze, he said he can glide around without melting in the sun."When you get out towards the coast, then you can get to enjoy the beach," Lynn said. "This is what it's meant for!"The National Weather Service forecasts the heat advisory in the County's inland areas to remain in effect until 9 pm Saturday. The excessive heat warning in the deserts will remain in effect until 9 pm Sunday. 1778
