SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Hours after Navy officials said all fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were extinguished, smoke was visible coming from the vessel at Naval Base San Diego early Friday morning.Radio scanner traffic obtained by ABC 10News indicated crews at the scene reported at least two fires onboard the ship and called for evacuations at around 1 a.m. Friday. The 10News Breaking News Tracker observed smoke coming from the ship’s front end.At around 5 a.m., a Navy spokesperson confirmed to ABC 10News that no evacuations were ordered and all fires were out. The spokesperson said investigators were looking into the matter.On Thursday afternoon, Navy officials said all known fires aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard were declared out. The blaze on the ship erupted on the morning of July 12, and the firefighting efforts involving hundreds of crew members and thousands of aerial water drops took four full days.Navy officials said they will not know the exact cause of the fire until the ship can be inspected fully.ABC 10News learned Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday will be at Naval Base San Diego on Friday to inspect the USS Bonhomme Richard.During a Thursday afternoon press briefing, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck described the 22-year-old ship as ravaged -- its melted aluminum superstructure bent at a 45-degree angle -- but not dead in the water."The ship can be repaired," he said. "Whether or not it will be repaired will be determined."A total of 40 sailors and 23 civilian firefighters suffered various minor injuries, mostly heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation, while taking part in the battle to defeat the blaze, Navy officials said.The Bonhomme Richard is the third warship in U.S. naval history to bear the name, which means "Good Man Richard" in French and honors Benjamin Franklin's "Poor Richard's Almanac."The vessel has been homeported at Naval Base San Diego since the spring of 2018, when it returned from a six-year port switch to Sasebo, Japan, while becoming the command ship for Navy Expeditionary Strike Group Seven.City News Service contributed to this report 2114

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Family Fun Center has returned to its roots in Kearny Mesa, reopening the Clairemont Mesa Blvd. location on Saturday.Following the closure of Boomers! last June after parent company Apex Parks Group filed for bankruptcy, the Huish family — who own the land — has revived the site under its original name.Shane Huish says his father built the original park at the site in 1974 and operated it for about 20 years before it was sold to Boomers! in the 1990s."With that happening, our family was excited to get them back. However, when we went back to the parks in June, we were floored," said Shane Huish.Huish says the former Boomers! was in need of several improvements and upgrades.Among those needed improvements, miniature golf, bumper boats, and an arcade all in need of a facelift.Saturday, the park reopened Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with mini-golf on its Storybook and Westernland courses and go-karting, featuring updated karts and track. Also returning, Bullwinkle’s Restaurant.Huish says the park's bumper boats will need to wait for state guidance since they are considered an amusement park attraction."We have been fixing up the miniature golf courses and that will continue ... we have completely gutted the arcade building and remodeled it," Huish said, adding that the arcade will also have to await state guidance to reopen.Huish says the future of the former El Cajon Boomers!, which is also owned by the family, depends on how the business landscape looks in the next four to six months due to the pandemic.For now, a dose of family fun in the outdoors has returned to the property."Our family is super excited to be back in San Diego, we all grew up there," Huish said.For hours and more information, head to Family Fun Centers' website here. 1794

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Gas prices continue to soar in Southern California, rising nearly two cents more Monday. According to figures from AAA, the price for a gallon of gas gone up more than 50 cents in less than a month. AAA also says that the price has risen for 21 consecutive days and 27 of the last 28 days in San Diego County. RELATED: San Diego's gas prices could soon hit average, something not seen for yearsThe price per-gallon is more than 20 cents more than a week ago, 51.7 cents more than a month ago and over 27 cents higher than a year ago. California's gas tax is also set to increase by 5.6 cents on July 1, 2019. Meanwhile, the national average for a gallon of gas Monday was .74.AAA says a series of refinery issues reduced gas supplies.Bloomberg Phillips 66 refinery in Los Angeles, and Chevron Corp.'s El Segundo plants all experienced shut downs and stalls in oil production due to various problems. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Freeway improvements will force westbound Interstate 8 to close this week.The westbound portion of I-8 at State Route 163 will close Wednesday at 11 p.m. until Thursday at 5 a.m. as part of an I-8/I-5 interchange improvement project, according to Caltrans.Westbound traffic on I-8 will be detoured onto northbound and southbound SR-163. The closure will stretch roughly five miles from Mission Valley to Ocean Beach.Officials ask motorists to observe Caltrans workers in the area and drive safely. 534
