President Donald Trump's nominee for an Alabama federal court judgeship is being criticized for not disclosing in his confirmation process his wife's role in the White House.Brett Talley did not disclose his wife's position as chief of staff for White House Counsel Donald McGahn on his Senate questionnaire, according to The New York Times.Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the top Democrat on the Senate judiciary committee, said the full Senate should not consider Talley's nomination until he explains why he failed to disclose the potential conflict of interest."By failing to disclose that his wife is one of President Trump's lawyers," Feinstein said in a statement, "Talley has betrayed his obligation to be open and transparent with the Senate and American people."The Senate judiciary committee advanced Talley's nomination along a party-line vote Thursday and a full Senate vote is expected soon.Question 24 of the disclosure form asks nominees to "identify the family members or other persons ... that are likely to present potential conflicts of interest." Talley did not mention his wife in the answer to this question, only responding: "If confirmed, I will recuse in any litigation where I have ever played a role." Additionally, Talley wrote, "I will evaluate any other real or potential conflict, or relationships that could give rise to appearance of conflict, on a case-by-case basis."A spokesman for the Republican-controlled Senate judiciary committee said Talley was not required to list a spouse' occupation on his questionnaire."It's no secret that that Mr. Talley's wife, Ann Donaldson, is the chief of staff to the White House counsel," judiciary spokesman Taylor Foy said in a statement. "She was sitting behind Mr. Talley at his nominations hearing. Anyone who had any concerns about his wife's occupation could have raised them at the hearing."He added, "Any insinuation that there's any conflict with the special counsel's investigation is absurd, as charges are being filed in the District of Columbia, not the Middle District of Alabama, where Talley is nominated to be a judge.Democrats have already criticized the 36-year-old Talley for his lack of legal experience. While the 2007 Harvard Law School graduate has clerked for federal district and appellate judges, Talley has never tried a case, and he received a rare "not qualified" rating from the American Bar Association.Talley had a prolific online media presence prior to his nomination; Talley referred to Hillary Clinton as "Hillary Rotten Clinton" on his public Twitter account which has since been made private, and pledged his total support for the National Rifle Association one month after the Sandy Hook school shooting where a gunman killed 20 elementary school children in Newtown, Connecticut in 2013.Talley is currently a deputy assistant attorney general in the Office of Legal Policy at the Justice Department. 2918

President Donald Trump, during a White House Cabinet meeting Wednesday, said he wants to terminate the Diversity Visa Lottery, a program that distributes around 50,000 visas to countries where there is a low rate of immigration to the US."I am, today, starting the process of terminating the diversity lottery program," Trump said, seated next to Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis. "I am going to ask Congress to immediately initiate work to get rid of this program, diversity lottery, diversity lottery. Sounds nice, it is not nice, it is not good. It hasn't been good and we have been against it."He added: "We're going to quickly as possible get rid of chain migration and move to a merit-based system." 746

RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) - The Fund for the Animals Wildlife Center is at capacity while it cares for a record number of patients. At the center, experts rehabilitate animals they hope to release back into the wild. Most of the predators are kept in the back of the 13 acre property to keep humans from imprinting on them, affecting their ability to survive after release.Staff take extreme care and 'secretly' feed their animals. From January 1to July 1, the center cared for 588 animals. As of Friday, they're currently caring for more than 100, and at capacity. Some of their animals documented in pictures provided to 10News, like an orphaned badger, the first badger the center has had in 20 years. They also have a Great-Horned Owl which was hit by a car."Our patients are one of three things, they're unfortunately orphaned, or ill or injured," director Matt Anderson said. They've seen 35 percent more patients compared to the same time last year, meaning they're caring for 154 more animals."It's what we call baby season, everybody expects it, it's a hectic time, all hands to the deck, the staff are wonderful so we're pushing forward and already have some success stories," Anderson said. The Center is funded through donations and The Humane Society of the US, those dollars critical now more than ever. Another factor behind the boom, higher rain levels meant more food all the way up the food chain."Lots more plant life, and lots more to eat for the prey items that our predators eat," he said that's also what brings predators into our neighborhoods."They're really really good at finding their own food, and so it's best to let them alone in their habitat and enjoy them from a distance," Anderson said.Reminding us how important it is to leave the animals alone so they can survive, go back into that sensitive ecosystem and keep it in balance. 1863

RANCHO BERNARDO, Calif. (KGTV) - The Rancho Bernardo Development Review Committee heard comments Tuesday night regarding an application for a recreational marijuana store. The owners of the store Urbn Leaf have applied to open a new location at 16375 Bernardo Center Drive, the site of the former Mexican restaurant El Torito. The committee was expected to vote on whether or not they would recommend approval of the conditional use permit, a non-binding decision that would be sent to the Rancho Bernardo Planning Community Planning Board. However, in a 3 to 2 decision, they voted to postpone the vote to a later date pending traffic and environmental studies of the potential impacts. 692

RANCHO SANTA FE (CNS) - In the wake of COVID-19 shutdowns, the Helen Woodward Animal Center will launch online educational programming for children stuck at home. The center's Humane Education department will stream baby animals from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with a focus on a new animal every hour.Helen Woodward Animal Center has offered humane education programs dedicated to appreciating animals since its founding. The center also runs a pet encounter therapy program."The enormous growth of adoptions is based on the undeniable way pets create a happier, more loving home," center spokeswoman Jessica Gercke said. "With this in mind, Helen Woodward Animal Center is dedicating this time to bringing the gifts of animals into the homes of friends, supporters, and animal-lovers struggling with social distancing."In order to take precautions against the COVID-19 pandemic, all on- site humane education programs at the center are closed until April 6.A live stream of the animals, including puppies, rabbits, baby goats and parrots, can be viewed at animalcenter.org/programs-services/education/critter-cam. 1134
