Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, called for the U.S. to "double down" on what he called "common-sense" public health measures on Monday as the country faces a critical juncture amid the COVID-19 pandemic.After enormous surges in cases in the spring and summer, the U.S. was able to flatten the curve a bit in early September. According to Johns Hopkins, the U.S. dropped to a low point of about 34,000 new daily cases of COVID-19, down from a high of about 70,000 new cases in July.However, case rates have increased gradually in recent weeks, and Fauci warned that Americans need to take public health measures seriously as cold weather forces many indoors, adding that the country is "not in a good place" ahead of winter."(Some states) are starting to show upticks in cases and even some increase in hospitalizations in some states," Fauci said Monday during an appearance on ABC's Good Morning America. "You don't want to be in a position like that as the weather starts getting cold."Fauci added that despite the increase in cases, he did not believe the U.S. needed to go into another total lockdown similar to the one that took place in March and April."I would really like to not go there because it causes so many collateral issues and problems," Fauci said. "...obviously, if things really explode, you'd have to consider that. But we want to do everything we possibly can to avoid an absolute shutdown. In other words, get the cases under control by the common-sense types of things that we've been talking about all along, those public health measures."However, Fauci said he was "concerned" by Florida's decision to reopen bars and restaurants. On Friday, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis moved the state into "Phase 3" of its reopening plan, meaning that restaurants, bars and hotels can operate at full capacity. Local governments are also unable to restrict a business' operating capacity unless granted permission by the state.Fauci said he was specifically troubled by the state's reopening of bars."That is very concerning to me," Fauci said. "We have always said that — myself and Dr. Deborah Birx, who is the coordinator of the task force — that that is something that we really need to be careful about, because when you're dealing with community spread, and you have the type of congregate setting where people get together, particularly without masks, you're really asking for trouble."In the past, Fauci has advocated for five common-sense public health measures that all Americans should take amid the pandemic: Wearing masks, avoiding crowds, keeping six feet apart from others, constant hand washing and opting for outdoor activities over indoor activities. He says if the U.S. continues to follow those guidelines, the country can continue to open up the economy."If you (open the economy) in a prudent way — in a prudent way means focus on things that are important — you can open businesses, you can do things like that," Fauci said. "But when you start opening up bars without masks or congregate settings where people are indoors without masks, that's asking for trouble." 3136

During a time where a large number of Florida residents are without power in the wake of Hurricane Irma, two Florida men were caught attempting to steal a ,500 utility pole.42-year-old Blake Lee Waller and 46-year-old Victor Walter Apeler were arrested on grand theft charges Wednesday after someone reported seeing them load the pole onto the top of their car, according to the Jacksonville sheriff’s office.A police report says that the two were spotted driving with the pole on top of their vehicle, they were then stopped by officials and arrested.The report says that one of the men told officials that he had to move the pole because it was on the ground so close to traffic lanes, according to the Associated Press.The sheriff's office tweeted a picture of the shirtless men sitting handcuffed on the sidewalk next to the car carrying the utility pole.  895

Dunkin' Donuts is chowing down on the gluten-free craze.The company introduced its first-ever gluten-free bakery product: a fudge brownie. It's available in all of Dunkin's 8,500 US stores beginning Monday.Dunkin' said in a statement it recognizes "the importance of providing alternative choices for people with dietary restrictions or who choose a gluten-free diet."Gluten-free food has soared in popularity, projected to rake in billion in sales by 2020, a 20% increase from 2015, according to food industry research company Packaged Facts. EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. -- Paul and Jenny Fisch can't even step inside their home without wearing a breathing mask. Their dream home was destroyed after they thought the house was sold."I mean, there was just no words...the feces and the urine spread all over our white cabinets, all over our hardwood floor, it was even on the ceiling —10-foot ceilings," Jenny Fisch said.The Fischs put their home on the market for 0,000, and the first offer they received was for full asking price. They were elated, but there was a catch: The buyers wanted to rent the home with the promise they would close in three months."We were told these people were 100 percent qualified, there was no question about it," Jenny Fisch said.Everything seemed to be fine, and they had no reason to doubt the offer. The realtor drafted up a contract with information about the loan and a closing date of January 31, 2018. The deadline came and went without the buyers closing on their home even though they were already living in it."What do we do? The only thing we have left to do is start an eviction," Paul Fisch said.The couple even attempted to work out a new deal with the would-be buyers so they could continue renting and eventually purchase the home. The buyers stopped paying rent and they had no choice but to evict them. It wasn't a quick process. Paul and Jenny Fisch weren't prepared for what they were about to find when they showed up to their home with a sheriff's deputy to finally kick the renters out."When she walked out her face was like, 'it's bad," said Paul Fisch.Floors were covered in urine, there was feces everywhere and the smell was overwhelming. The house was absolutely filthy and completely trashed."And I lost it, I just lost it. I was like, 'I don't understand why we have to go through this.' I mean we hired people and now my beautiful dream home is covered in feces and I don't know how we're going to fix it," said Jenny Fisch.Records show the buyer was pre-approved for a loan, but only if he completed a program and improved his credit score. The lender said that never happened. This information was not made available to the Fischs, and they only found out after the deal fell through.The couple said their agent and the buyer's agent assured them everything was good when they agreed to let the buyers rent. A spokesperson for RE/MAX, the buyer's realtor, said realtors don't qualify buyers and it is up to the lender."It's their fault and nobody wants to help us," said Jenny Fisch.The Fischs tried to filed a report with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office, but they were told it was a civil matter. They also tried to contact Child Protective Services and animal control because a child, seven dogs and three cats lived in the home with the renters.The Fischs' insurance also won't cover the damage. A spokesperson for Auto-Owners Insurance said they had no comment on the situation.Now the couple is paying a mortgage on a home they can't live in and trying to figure out how to come up with the funds to pay for repairs. The would-be buyers are nowhere to be found, and Scripps station KMGH in Denver has not been able to make contact with them."It was insane to me how somebody could live in such a nice home and in a matter of months, destroy everything," said Paul Fisch. 3382
