The family of the Dayton, Ohio, shooter published glowing obituaries of both the gunman and one of the first casualties in the massacre -- his younger sister, 22-year-old Megan Betts. The obituaries were published Tuesday on the website for the Conner & Koch Life Celebration Home in Bellbrook, Ohio, but the remembrance for gunman Connor Betts was removed Wednesday at the family's request, according to the funeral home.Connor Betts' parents later updated the message on their son's obituary page."Stephen and Moira Betts apologize that the wording of the obituary for their son Connor was insensitive in not acknowledging the terrible tragedy that he created," the message said. "In their grief, they presented the son that they knew which in no way reduces the horror of his last act. We are deeply sorry."The obituary for Betts, who was killed by police after he took nine lives in the August 4 mass shooting, was shorter than his sister's. Both writeups encouraged people to donate to an ecology institute in nearby Yellow Springs instead of sending flowers.Friend who provided body armor faces chargesA now-removed page for the shooter also included 21 photos. They ranged from his younger days doing martial arts to more recent images of him drinking beer and smiling with family members. The obituary said he was a grill cook who loved reading, video games and music. He "will be missed immensely by his friends, family, and especially his good dog Teddy," it says.Neither obituary mentions the shooting, or that Betts was killed by her brother.A young man drawn to violenceInvestigators and those who knew Connor Betts have described him as bent on violence. Former classmates said he kept a list of people he wanted to kill or rape, and he was in a "pornogrind" band known for its graphic, violent lyrics. The 24-year-old also enjoyed shooting, a friend said. A Twitter account that appears to belong to him -- and whose bio proclaimed, "I'm going to hell and I'm not coming back" -- retweeted far left-wing and anti-police posts.Armed with a .223-caliber high-capacity rifle, Betts fired 41 shots in less than 30 seconds that night in Dayton, killing his sister as well as eight seemingly random bystanders, police said.In a statement following the shooting, the Betts family said they were "shocked and devastated" by what happened and were cooperating with police. They pleaded for privacy while they mourned.A woman answering the phone at Conner & Koch said the obituaries came from the Betts family. Another woman answering the phone on a follow-up call said Megan Betts' obituary also appeared in a local paper, while her brother's had not.A younger sister about to graduate from collegeThe Dayton Daily News published 2753

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention expressed concern on Monday as it released figures that show a significant portion of young Americans are at a high risk of developing type 2 diabetes. According to CDC findings, 1 in 4 young adults aged 19-34 and 1 in 5 adolescents aged 12-18 suffer from prediabetes. Those with prediabetes have elevated blood sugar levels, but have not reached the threshold to be considered diabetic. The report from the CDC stated that overweight young people were significantly more likely to have prediabetes. The report found that 25.7% of overweight adolescents had elevated blood sugar levels, compared to 16.4 of adolescents of normal weight. Those figures were even pronounced among young adults. 36.6% of overweight young adults were prediabetic compared to 16.6% of young adults with a normal weight. “The prevalence of prediabetes in adolescents and young adults reinforces the critical need for effective public health strategies that promote healthy eating habits, physical activity, and stress management,” said CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, M.D. “These lifestyle behaviors can begin early in a child’s life and should continue through adolescence and adulthood to reduce onset of type 2 diabetes.”The CDC expressed concerns that young Americans with prediabetes face significantly higher cholesterol levels, systolic blood pressure, abdominal fat and lower insulin sensitivity than those with normal glucose tolerance, which increased their risk of type 2 diabetes and other cardiovascular diseases. All told, 1 in 3 American adults are prediabetic. Another 1 in 4 adult American are diabetic anddo not know it.The CDC says that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy food, and being active. In the last 20 years, the number of adults in the US with diabetes have doubled, according to CDC figures. The Dominican Republic's top tourism official on Friday downplayed a spate of deaths among American tourists as an exaggeration."It's not true that there has been an avalanche of American tourists dying in our country, and it's not true that we have mysterious deaths here," Tourism Minister Francisco Javier Garcia told reporters.Garcia said toxicology reports were still pending in some cases but that autopsy results and causes of death have been released. He said his country has been in constant communication with US Embassy officials. The characterization in some media outlets of an "avalanche of deaths does not correspond to reality," he said.At the news conference, the minister read the names of the Americans who have died in the past year, with the official cause of death -- noting that all died of natural causes.Garcia said Americans are not canceling their vacations to the Dominican Republic. His country was working to clear up what he called misrepresentations and "exaggerated" reports about the deaths."We want the truth, not a special treatment," he said.At least nine American citizens have died at Dominican Republic resorts -- or after falling ill at one -- over the past year, according to information from the US State Department, victims' family members and the resorts involved. The deaths have left some Americans wondering if they should cancel upcoming trips to the Caribbean nation.Officials there have called the deaths isolated events as they work to reassure travelers their country is safe.Of the nine Americans who have died while or after visiting a Dominican Republic resort since June 2018, it's not clear how many deaths owed to natural causes.Samples taken from at least one minibar at the Bahia Principe Hotel were being tested by the FBI as part of the agency's collaboration with Dominican authorities, the country's public health ministry said this week.Officials in the Dominican Republican or the United States have not said the deaths are connected.Three of the Americans died at the Bahia Principe resort in La Romana within days of each other. Two died at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana. The investigations into the deaths have included visits from health inspectors, including environmental health and epidemiology specialists, according to Carlos Suero, spokesman for the public health ministry. The State Department has a standing travel advisory for the Dominican Republic, urging travelers to have caution because of crime, but it has not issued a travel alert specific to the traveler deaths. From 2012 to 2018, 128 Americans died in the Dominican Republic from something other than natural causes, according to US State Department statistics. That averages about 18 annually. The Dominican Republic is one of the Caribbean's top tourism destinations, with more than 6 million stopover tourists last year, including 2.2 million Americans, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization.Tourism represented more than 17 percent of the country's economy last year, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council. 3098

The lives of the rich and famous are about to get a lot less smoky after the Beverly Hills City Council voted to ban the retail sale of most tobacco products Tuesday night in a first-of-its-kind ordinance. The law will go into effect New Year's Day in 2021.The retail sale of cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco, chewing tobacco and electronic cigarettes sold in gas stations, convenience stores, pharmacies and grocery stores will be banned. This is the first U.S. city to end most tobacco sales. There are some exceptions though — existing cigar lounges can still operate and hotels will be able to sell cigarettes and other items to its guests."We pride ourselves on being a healthy city and I feel so proud that we are really about to prove that we are taking steps to be among the healthiest city in the world," said Council Member Lili Bosse. Beverly Hills was the first city in California to ban smoking inside restaurants and most public places back in 1987. 979
