There was a mixture of excitement and nervousness Monday, as nearly 600 spellers kicked off the 2019 Scripps National Spelling Bee with a test. The preliminary test is made up of 12 spelling words and 14 vocabulary words.“I think it was fun, but also stressful in a way because it was difficult,” says speller Tommy Cherry of Florida.Cherry says he’s happy with how he did. His friend, Arik Karim, feels the same.“I think I learned a lot from it,” Karim, who is also from Florida, says.The friends help each other study. “There's just going to be a lot going on, so sometimes I think it's good to like take a break and, you know, just get to study,” says Karim.The two met at last year’s Scripps National Spelling Bee, but they hadn’t seen each other since. They were able to connect at this year’s competition. “I like socializing with a lot of people who I have a lot in common with,” Cherry says.They’re looking forward to hitting the stage again.“I feel pretty confident, considering that, yes, we do have a list that we study from, and I think I'm well acquainted with the words that we receive,” Karim says.The spellers will take the stage Tuesday for the second round of preliminaries. There were false reports of an active shooter after a theft at the Harker Heights Walmart, according to the Harker Heights Police Department. Harker Heights PD says around 6:31 p.m. on August 8, officers were dispatched for a theft in progress at the Walmart, located at 2020 Heights Drive. When officers arrived. the suspect had evaded Walmart asset protection and ran across Interstate 14. Harker Heights PD says as the suspect ran, an arriving officer saw a large crowd running out of the store from a reported call of an active shooter. More officers then responded to the Walmart for the reported active shooter. Officers cleared the store and determined the reported active shooter was a false alarm. A Walmart employee told Central Texas News Now that employees and shoppers were told to exit the building, but allowed to return after 30 minutes.Harker Heights PD says at this time, Walmart is back to normal operations. 940

The US signed an asylum agreement in the Oval Office with Guatemala Friday, President Donald Trump said.The agreement commits Guatemala to extending asylum to migrants who seek it when they're moving through the country, according to a US official.The White House called it a "safe third agreement," but it is unclear if the agreement carries the same legal weight as a "safe third agreement" that would have the effect of preventing some migrants from applying for asylum in the US.Instead, Friday's agreement is a show of cooperation between the two countries, as they've done numerous times before, on the heels of the President's frustrations with the Guatemala for not moving pressing forward with a "safe-third" agreement.Earlier this month, the US appeared close to signing a safe-third country agreement with Guatemala.
