Of those statistics, there is an all-time-high in the number of undeclared or “No-Party-Preference” voters. San Diego County Registrar of Voters, Michael Vu, said there are 1.77 million registered voters in the county, the highest it has ever been. That number surpasses the November 2016 election statistics, where there were 1.65 million registered San Diegans. SAN DIEGO, California — One year ago, life forever changed for Navy EOD technician Kenton Stacy and his family.He was in a Syrian hospital clearing IEDs when one exploded, leaving him with a two percent chance of survival. His comrades fought to save his life and did, but Kenton was left paralyzed and unable to talk.He's now receiving care at the VA Medical Center in La Jolla.“We’re all ready for him to come home, it's just been hard juggling being here, being with the kids," said Lindsey Stacy, Kenton's wife.The couple has four children, one with special needs.As they work through Kenton's recovery, the family was hit with yet another unexpected hardship.They've been renting their Chesapeake, VA home for the last two years, not realizing tenants were destroying the house.The carpet and blinds were destroyed as well as much of the hardwood floors. The tenants also smoked cigarettes in the home."I just couldn't believe that people would destroy someone else’s property like that, shocking and it hurt,” said Lindsey.She shared what happened on their Facebook page #StacyStrong.It didn't take long for the community to step up and help make it right, with members of the EOD community spending hours to repair the house.Real estate agent Julie Fish, wife of an EOD tech, also stepped up to help.She's going to help sell the house without taking a commission and has enlisted help for labor and needed repairs. "The EOD community, they really have made it that they're taking care of it and it's one less thing I have to worry about," said Lindsey. "It really hits home that everyone really does just care and sees how much he has sacrificed for our country."Fish says many have already stepped up to help with the house but that they may still need a sliding door and fence.Those wanting to help the Stacy family can also donate to their Go Fund Me page.  1885

SAN DIEGO, Calif. (KGTV) - Honor Flight is a National organization that takes older veterans to Washington D.C. to visit war memorials, and the nonprofit just announced that all flights in 2020 will be postponed. For Honor Flight San Diego, the two canceled trips in 2020 means 160 World War II and Korean War veterans will have to wait until May of 2021 to take the trip, putting a year and a half between trips. Nationally, an estimated 20,000 veterans are being impacted by 2020’s cancellations.Holly Shaffner is the Director of Public Relations for Honor Flight San Diego and said the local chapter is still trying to find ways to keep the excitement for the veterans who are unable to travel this year. She said one of the emotional surprises for the veterans on the trip is “mail call,” when they surprise the group with a package of letters from family, friends and strangers thanking them for their service. This is to pay tribute to getting letters from home while they were in the service.“In World War II they didn’t have the technology that we have today where you can do FaceTime and emails,” said Shaffner.Honor Flight San Diego has already collected about 1,900 letters that they had planned to give out to the veterans on the 2020 trip, so organizers decided to use these letters to lift the spirits of the veterans who now have to wait a year for the trip. Honor Flight will be putting together mail call packages to mail to the veterans homes for them to open, hopefully giving them something to look forward to.Shaffner said one of the hardest realizations for them is acknowledging that of the World War II veterans on the list, not all of them will still be alive.“The reality for us is that when we start making the phone calls for them to go on that trip in May, there will be veterans that have passed away and there will be veterans that cannot travel,” she said.She hopes sending the letters to their home will help keep their spirits high during this lull.Winona Ruth Gunther is 100 years old and is one of the World War II veterans who was supposed to go in 2020. She said she’s worried about public places right now so she respects the decision to wait until 2021.“At my age you really take a chance when you get into a crowd and an airplane particularly,” she said.She worked as a corpsman in the Hospital Corps of the Navy in World War II. She has stories of caring for injured people in California and says those hard memories are the ones that stay with her. She’s already seen many of the memorials in Washington D.C., but said she was looking forward to going with the Honor Flight group because of the connection they all will feel seeing these memorials together.“It’s the camaraderie that you have with people that have similar experiences that you look forward to,” she said.Now, she waits for May of 2021, with some surprise letters heading her way thanks to Honor Flight.Shaffner said another obstacle the nonprofit is facing is keeping funding up. When the veterans are taken to Washington D.C., they don’t pay a dime. Everything, from the flight to the food, is paid for by donations. She said it costs about 0,000 for the two trips from San Diego. Shaffner said right now, they only have enough money raised for one trip in 2021. She said if they could, they would take even more than the planned 160 people next year to make up for the two lost trips in 2020, but that would be dependent on funding, which isn’t possible right now. 3487

SAN DIEGO COUNTY (KGTV)— Many residents in San Diego County woke up to a big mess after yesterday’s storms brought in the steady rain. Many people witnessed an early morning recovery mission in San Diego Bay Sunday. A 30-foot boat was found partially underwater at La Playa Cove near Shelter Island. San Diego Harbor Police believed no one was inside. But, a friend of the boat owner thought last night’s weather and rough waters might be the reasons it sank.“They may have come in last night during the storm and coming in, the boat sank on them,” friend of the boat owner, Jeff Gough said. Meanwhile, in North County, a large pine tree toppled down onto Eldorado Drive in Escondido.“There was room for like one car width for people to go around it,” homeowner Richard Bensinger said. Bensinger remembered when he planted what was a tiny Christmas tree in his front lawn 15 years ago. It has since grown to be more than 30 feet tall. Bensinger was shocked it came down this morning. He knows now, not to underestimate the power of mother nature.“It was angled a bit, but the roots were spread all over the place. So I'm surprised it actually fell over, but it’s just been so wet and muddy out there, and as you can see, all that mud pulled the whole thing over,” Bensinger said. He now has to live with a pile of pine chunks on his front lawn until county crews come to pick them up. Still, he is relieved no one was hurt.“I’m glad it didn’t fall onto somebody as they were falling down the street,” Bensinger said. The next storm is headed to San Diego County on Wednesday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV)-- Flags are being flown at half-staff around the country today to honor fallen firefighters and to promote emergency preparedness. Sunday is also the kick-off of National Fire Prevention Week.Cher Smith's home in Crest has a 360-degree view of nature. It's beautiful to look at, but dangerous during fire season. "Somebody is throwing a cigarette out, sparks from a car, whatever," Smith said. "There's always that fear that something is all of a sudden going to cause a fire to get out of control."In the last month, she and her son-in-law spent hours clearing up the dead brush on her 2.5 acre property. "We just barely made a dent on what needed to be done," Smith said. Smith said she couldn't afford to pay a landscaper to finish the job, but that all changed when she looked out her window earlier this week. "They are all up there like ants on the mountain bringing down the brush," Smith said. She saw CALFIRE and inmate fire crews working earnestly, with shovels in hand, to create a safe, defensible space. The space won't just create a defensible space for Smith's home, but for the entire Crest community. "I said, 'You have no idea how jazzed I am that you guys are doing this for us!'" Smith said enthusiastically. That's because just last month, she watched the Dehesa fire, creeping up toward her home. Also, back in 2003, her son-in-law lost his childhood home to a wildfire."A lot of people in Crest had their homes burned, so I think people are on high alert and sensitive to the dangers," Smith said. That's why to kick off National Fire Prevention Week, she wants to thank the fire service for their hard work. She also wants to remind her East County neighbors to be prepared. "I like to see our tax dollars going to being proactive, rather than having them create these fire barriers after the fact," Smith said. 1861
