Law enforcement officials in Oregon say there is no evidence that anti-fascists or right-wring groups were the cause of a series of devastating wildfires throughout the state.Oregon is one of about a dozen states in the western U.S. that are currently battling historic wildfires, which have spread due to heatwaves combined with dry and humid conditions. But as the fires spread in Oregon, so have conspiracy theories linking their origin. According to USA Today, several Facebook posts have gone viral in recent days that claim the fires were started in connection with ongoing civil unrest in Portland. One of those posts included a screenshot of what appeared to be a status update by the Medford Police Department. That post claimed that five members of the "Proud Boys" — a right-wing group known for inciting violence at protests — had been arrested for arson due to anonymous tips. 895

Lieutenant Madeline Swegle, who is the U.S. Navy's first Black female tactical fighter pilot, received her Wings of Gold on Friday.“I’m excited to have this opportunity to work harder and fly high-performance jet aircraft in the fleet,” Lt. Swegle said in a statement released by the Navy. “It would’ve been nice to see someone who looked like me in this role; I never intended to be the first. I hope it’s encouraging to other people.”The Burke, Virginia native, who graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 2017, received her Wings of Gold with 25 classmates during a small ceremony at Naval Air Station in Kingsville, Texas, the Navy said.“Lt. j.g. Swegle has proven to be a courageous trailblazer,” Commander, Naval Air Forces Vice Adm. DeWolfe “Bullet” Miller III said in the statement. “She has joined a select group of people who earned Wings of Gold and answered the call to defend our nation from the air. The diversity of that group—with differences in background, skill, and thought—makes us a stronger fighting force.” 1038

LEXINGTON, Ky. — A Kentucky man is accused of using other people's identities to buy luxury cars and lease apartments in Kentucky and Florida.39-year-old Kenneth Mobley was arrested earlier this month as part of investigations by Lexington Police and the Kentucky State Police-Vehicle Investigations Unit.Five cars valued at around 5,000 were recovered as part of these investigations.Lexington police say back in March, detectives learned Mobley used an Oregon man's identity and a fraudulent check to buy a BMW convertible from a Kentucky car dealership and rent an apartment. Mobley was arrested later that month in Tampa, Florida. In early September, police say detectives learned Mobley was possibly back in Kentucky. Evidence ultimately linked to him was found at multiple police scenes in Lexington, including the collision of a Dodge Charger Hellcat that was left abandoned on Chestnut Street. 912

Leonard Harrison tells everyone he meets to call him by his nickname, Country.“We've come to Lake Charles to see who we can help,” he said.Country came with "Goliath," his personal high-water vehicle, which can make its way through 5 feet of water and into areas hit hard by storms.“When I come in, I can literally rescue 18 at once, get everybody in the truck and drive them all out," he said. "Get them to safety and get back in and get 18 more."He’s part of the U.S. Veterans Corps and drove 14 hours from his home in North Carolina to support the so-called Cajun Navy, a nonprofit group of boat owners who began rescuing people after Hurricane Katrina.“That's what the Cajun Navy is known for,” he said. Now, they’re here for hurricane Laura, with storm damage that residents in this corner of Louisiana are just coming to grips with. There are some things that don’t mix: hurricanes, trees, and power lines. The damage is all over southwest Louisiana and it could be weeks before some people get their power back.Yet, that isn’t stopping some residents like Deitrick Broussard from trying to see if they can come back before then.“I was trying to rush and come and see the damage,” Broussard said, who evacuated with his pregnant wife.We followed Broussard as he looked around his home for the first time since Hurricane Laura hit.His relief was palpable.“I thought it was going to be worse,” Broussard said. “I don’t see any damage. I'm happy, so far. I just don't know what's inside there. But, yeah I'm happy it stood up. That’s great.”For many, though, getting back up on their feet will take a while. The long clean-up process is only just beginning. 1666
