SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Google is running a secret research lab in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the tech giant invests to experiment and invent what may be world-changing technologies for the future, U.S. media reported on Monday.According to The New York Times, at the lab dubbed Google X, engineers are working at some 100 projects from robots, smart refrigerators to Internet-enabled dinner plates and a "space elevator," a proposed non-rocket space launch structure.An unnamed Google engineer familiar with the lab told the newspaper that it was run as mysteriously as the CIA with two officers, a nondescript one for logistics on the company's Mountain View campus and one for robots in a secret location.Scientists working at the lab include many roboticists and electrical engineers hired from Microsoft, Nokia labs, Stanford, MIT, Carnegie Mellon and New York University. Google's co-founder Sergey Brin is said to be "deeply involved" in Google X.The lab is reportedly headed by Sebastian Thrun, one of the world's top robotics and artificial intelligence experts. LOS ANGELES, Dec. 21 (Xinhua) -- The late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs will be honored posthumously with a Grammy award for his contributions to music technology, The Recording Academy announced on Wednesday.Jobs, who passed away Oct. 5 of pancreatic cancer, will receive a Trustees Award for helping create products "that transformed the way we consume music, TV, movies and books," the academy said in a prepared statement.The Apple Computer Inc. first received a Technical Grammy Award in 2002, for contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording field, the academy said.Along with Jobs, bandleader and composer Dave Bartholomew, recording engineer Rudy Van Gelder will also receive the award.The academy also picked the Allman Brothers, Glen Campbell, Diana Ross and Brazilian pianist/singer/guitarist Antonio Carlos Jobim as recipients of Lifetime Achievement Awards. BEIJING, Oct. 21 (Xinhua) -- China's State Councilon Thursday called ordered improved, innovative administration in environmental protection, according to a statement.In a statement published on the central government's website, the State Council listed a series of guidelines on environment-related issues, saying that it will step efforts to address prominent environmental problems that affect people's lives and sustainable development.The statement ordered strictly implementing environmental impact assessment, vigoroulsy developing environmental protection industry, and ensuring nuclear and radioactive safety.It called for implementing economic policies beneficial to environmental protection.The statement also ordered local governments at all levels to attach more importance to environmental protection, noting ecological conditions should be considered in evaluating the performance of local leaders.

BEIJING, Nov. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- The amount of trans fat and other nutritional information will be marked on the labels of prepackaged food, according to the country's first national standard for food nutrition. The labeling will take effect on Jan 1, 2013. "It will help standardize the nutrition facts labeling by food producers and facilitate consumers' rights to know and choose, while improving public awareness of food nutrition," said Yang Yuexin, a senior nutritionist with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The new regulation by the Ministry of Health stipulates that food labels have to include the food's nutrition information, including levels of energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate and sodium. Food products without proper labels showing the nutritional information will be banned when the new rule takes effect. The new regulation also stipulates that if any hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated fat is used to produce the food, the level of trans fat will have to be highlighted on the nutrition information label. Trans fat is usually produced during food processing when liquid oils are converted into semi-solid fats that help keep food fresh longer. However, the partially hydrogenated oil contains trans fat that can substantially increase the risk of heart disease. However, Zhang Jian, a researcher with CDC's National Institute for Nutrition and Food Safety, said that compared to Western diets, the Chinese diet contains a far lower level of trans fat and there is no need to over react.
