(AP) — A jury is deliberating in the trial of a Southern California man charged with killing a family of four and burying their bodies in the desert.Jurors on Thursday got the case brought by San Bernardino County prosecutors against 62-year-old Charles "Chase" Merritt.Merritt's business associate Joseph McStay, McStay's wife Summer and the couple's 3- and 4-year-old sons vanished from their San Diego County home in 2010. Three years later, their bodies were found in shallow desert graves more than 100 miles away.Merritt was arrested in 2014. Authorities said they traced his cellphone to the gravesite area and to a call seeking to close McStay's online bookkeeping account.The trial began in January. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A flash fire at the Ballast Point Brewing Company kitchen in Miramar sent one person to a hospital Saturday.Just after 9 a.m., firefighters were alerted to a kitchen fire at the brewpub, in the 9000 block of Carroll Way, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesperson Monica Munoz said.A man in his 40s had to be taken to a hospital for burns, though they were not considered severe, Munoz said.No one else was injured.The brewery announced on social media that it will be closed all day Saturday and open for normal business hours Sunday.The San Diego County Department of Environmental Health will need to be called in to inspect fire safety equipment that was used by the restaurant before it can re-open, Munoz said. 745

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — The California Medical Board is looking into a case where a San Diego doctor is accused of using dirty needles on pediatric patients. Newly released documents by the California Medical board states Dr. Bret Robert Gerber used dirty syringes on a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old in July 2016. At the time, Dr. Gerber worked at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Hillcrest. The documents state a medical assistant reported seeing the doctor bring in two boxes of unauthorized needles from home. Upon closer review, she noticed that the syringes had expired in 2008, and the boxes contained dead insects and what looked to be rodent droppings. Three years before this alleged incident, Dr. Gerber was arrested by Mono County Sheriff's deputies for having psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. Deputies found the drugs inside his Winnebago during a traffic stop as the doctor was on his way to the Burning Man Festival. He later admitted to using ecstasy at the festival.Instead of court, Dr. Gerber went through a diversion program and the Medical Board put him on probation. However, in March 2018, documents showed Gerber violated his probation after failing to provide a bodily fluids sample for a drug test. Despite his prior offenses, Dr. Gerber’s medical license was never revoked. SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. (KGTV) - Border Patrol agents arrested a teenager Tuesday on suspicion of smuggling heroin along Interstate 5 in San Clemente. The 19-year-old man was weaving in and out of lanes near Camino de Estrella about 3 a.m., agents said. He drove his 1997 Chevy pickup truck to a nearby gas station and agents followed to conduct a safety check. “During the encounter, the agents grew suspicious of the driver’s behavior and they decided to request for a K-9 team to respond. The K-9 alerted to the truck’s engine compartment,” agent Theron S. Francisco said in a news release. Agents said they found four packages of heroin inside the truck’s air intake box. The drugs weighed almost five pounds and had a street value of about 7,000. The driver, a U.S. citizen, faces felony drug smuggling charges. 824
