In total, the average San Diego household spent nearly ,000 per year on expenses, according to the report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. From 2017 to 2018, more than ,000 went to housing for the average San Diegan, accounting for nearly 36 percent of families’ household budgets. San Diego (KGTV) -- A local enterprise center for at-risk teens in City Heights is doing what they can to help those struggling during the pandemic. Their weekly food distribution is serving hundreds of people.The Union of Pan Asian Communities, also known as UPAC, works with at-risk teens in the City Heights community. The organization strives to lead the teens on a successful path.“We provide all the mentorship and guidance that we can for these kids to follow the right tracks but employment is such a critical feature,” says Director Dante Dauz.In 2018, the Enterprise Center was created to help the teens gain employment and entrepreneurial skills. The center consists of the “Neighborhood Cafe,” a commercial kitchen, print shop and technology center.“They are prepared to open up their own business,” says Dauz. “They’ve been instructed from top to bottom about what licenses they need, business formation, marketing plan.”When the pandemic hit, Dauz says many people in the City Heights area were in need of food.“This community was already experiencing challenges and barriers before COVID-19 hit.”UPAC distributes 6,000 pounds of food through care boxes every Friday.“In addition to the distribution boxes our cafe also pumps out roughly 1,000 hot meals for the families.”Dauz says the teens serving the families not only get a chance to better their professional skills but also give back to the City Heights community they love.“Food for the next few days isn’t going to solve all their problems but, its definitely going to help,” says Dauz. “We take a lot of pride in being able to do that.”The organization says to ensure there is enough for everyone, they encourage people to call and reserve a donation box ahead of time. 1750

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A local family is desperately pleading to individual ICE officials to let them see their patriarch for the first time in 19 months. The Bakala family is seeking asylum after they say they barely escaped death in the Republic of Congo. Once they reached San Diego, the family of nine was separated.17-year-old Marie Louise Bakala should be focusing on college. But right now, that is on hold. "I am getting stronger, but it is not enough because I need my father back," Mari Louise said to the St. Luke's Episcopal Church congregation in North Park. The Bakala's left a comfortable life in the Republic of Congo. Father Constantin was a computer engineer for the Ministry of Health. His wife Annie Kapongo was a shop owner and mother of seven. The Bakalas say it all changed when the new government stepped in. Kapongo says because of Constantin's occupation, the family was targeted, brutalized, and even sexually abused by Congolese authorities. Fearing for their lives, they came to San Diego in 2017 to seek political asylum."This family came across a world come to a country that will protect them, but instead, it has only been a continuing nightmare," Pastor Colin Mathewson said. Annie Kapongo was released with an ankle monitor with the seven kids in San Diego. Immigration and Customs Enforcement [ICE] authorities detained Constantin in the East Coast alone. In February, a judge rejected Constantin's asylum case and appeal. But in March, he as given an emergency stay. Just last week, he earned the right to appear in front of a judge again, this time with a lawyer. Friends and staff of St. Luke's are now pleading with ICE to grant Constantin parole, to be with his family. They say it would be a show of good faith, just as the Good Samaritan did in the Bible."There is an assistant field director, and there is a deportation officer out there in Atlanta," Pastor Mathewson said. "We are asking Christine and Michael today to help somebody that needs so much help. After 19 months of detention, to bring him back home with his family as he awaits his next court date.""I hope that he will be here with us and we will be a family again," Marie Louise said."Please, please help me," Kapongo said through a French translator. "Send me back my husband."Last year, the couple missed their 20th wedding anniversary because Constantin was detained. If he is not paroled soon, he will also miss his eldest daughter, Marie Louise's 18th birthday. The family's next court date is September 25, 2019. 10News reached out to ICE for comment on this case. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego financial expert in San Diego has a message for women looking for success: a man is not a financial plan.Most women would rather talk with the grandmothers about their love lives than talk about financial planning, according to an investment survey done by Oppenheimer Funds.CPA Ginita Wall has a clear message.“Every marriage ends in either divorce or widowhood and 70 percent of the time it’s the woman who’s left alone,” said Wall. “Then thinking that magically, someday, I’ll start saving for retirement, someday I’ll be able to buy a house; living in the someday and not really planning for it today.”Wall moved her CPA practice to San Diego 31 years ago. She realized there was a need.“Women were out in the marketplace, but they weren't managing the money, and sadly, often nobody was.”Wall and financial planner Candace Bahr launched the Women’s Institute for Financial Education (WIFE), a nonprofit to give women the tools to start making a difference.“We didn't have anything to sell anybody. Our whole goal was and continues to be ‘our goal is education,’” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr established Second Saturday, a monthly workshop to teach women what they need to know during divorce. Each session brings in an attorney for matters of the court. Wall gives financial advice, a counselor helps with family issues, and a mediator can settle the differences. The experts volunteer their time.“It’s a decision for many people that may be the largest financial decision of their life, and if you're going through it uninformed or too emotional, it's going to be difficult to make the right choices.”Wall says love and money go together, but so do arguments.“if you loved me more, you wouldn't be spending this money, spending more on me, or you would understand how I feel.” Wall advises couples to talk about what’s important to them, make goals, create a concrete plan and monitor it.“So we want women to be partners in a relationship, not dependents,” said Bahr.Wall and Bahr’s money message has gone national. Second Saturday is now in 115 other locations around the country, and there are plans to be in 500 cities soon.“It's amazing because we didn't set out to do this for 31 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A new report from California State University, San Marcos, shows San Diego County's craft beer industry continued its uphill climb last year.In 2018, San Diego County saw its craft brewing family grow to a total of 155 independent craft brewers, bringing the region to a total of 202 operating brewery locations, the report revealed. The study was compiled by CSUSM, the school's Office of Business Research and Analysis, and San Diego Brewers Guild.Data did show that brewery openings slowed starting in 2017, but have rose slightly since.The majority of breweries are packed into Central San Diego, hosting 55% of craft breweries in the county, the report says. North County holds the second largest piece, with 32.5% of breweries, following by East County with 8.1%, and the South Bay with 4.4%.RELATED: First-of-its-kind craft beverage project planned for EscondidoYear-over-year, craft beer's economic impact to San Diego grew 6% in 2018 to an estimated .2 billion. The index surveys how respondents feel about barrelage production, distribution, employment, and capital expenditures.The report, adding that San Diego will soon see its own Museum of Beer in 2020, highlights the region's outlook for craft beer, breweries, and the industry's impact.When it comes to the style of beer drinkers prefer most, nationwide IPAs took 25.2% of the market, followed by belgain white (20.6%), other styles (14.5%), seasonal (13.6%), and lagers (11.1%).
