SAN FRANCISCO, June 28 (Xinhua) -- Google Android chief Andy Rubin said on Tuesday that the activations of Android-powered devices are growing at a rate of 4.4 percent on a weekly basis, with over 500,000 devices activated each day worldwide."There are now over 500,000 Android devices activated every day, and it's growing at 4.4 percent w/w," tweeted Rubin, Google's Senior Vice President of Mobile who oversees the development of Android, the open-source operating system for smartphones.Last month, Google said at its annual developer conference Google I/O that 400,000 Android devices were being activated each day, compared with 300,000 daily activations in December and 100, 000 in May 2010.More research data have shown Android system's soaring market share and popularity. Earlier this month, Internet market research company ComScore reported that Android remained the No. 1 smartphone operating system in the United States over the three months ending in April. The system captured 36.4 percent of U.S. smartphone subscribers, while Apple's iOS system for iPhone had 26 percent of all smartphone users.In April, market research company Gartner said in a forecast that the Android operating system will own 49.2 percent of the global smartphone market and Apple's iOS will have an 18.9-percent share in the second place.

MANILA, June 14 (Xinhua) -- At least 200 people, mostly children, have been taken to hospitals after allegedly suffering from food poisoning at a birthday party in the northern Philippine province of Bulacan, local newspaper Manila Bulletin reported Tuesday.Most of the victims suffered from stomach and chest pains, diarrhea and vomiting, local health officer Dr. Rizalli Lucas was quoted as saying.The victims claimed the cause of their food poisoning was the spaghetti served during a birthday celebration over the weekend in a village of Calumpit town.James P. de Jesus, mayor of Calumpit, said the situation is now contained and controlled but they still have to implement health measures and to determine the cause of the alleged food poisoning.Police have started investigating the incident.

BEIJING, June 27 (Xinhuanet) -- A lost tribe has been spotted in the Amazon rainforests of Brazil, according to the media report Monday.The discovery was confirmed by National Indian Foundation (FUNAI) of Brazil, a government body overseeing indigenous peoples.The tribe was initially found through satellite images earlier this year and later confirmed by the observers in aerial fight over the area.There are approximately 200 members in this isolate community who share three straw-roofed buildings and make their living from growing corns, bananas and other crops.FUNAI does not contact with the new-found tribe or give its exact location in order to protect its life from being disturbed."Among the main threats to the well-being of these groups are illegal fishing, hunting, logging, mining, cattle ranching and drug trafficking," FUNAI coordinator Fabricio Amorim warned."The work of identifying and protecting isolated groups is part of Brazilian public policy," he said, and "to confirm something like this takes years of methodical work."

Arianespace had planned six Ariane 5 missions through 2011.The satellite Arabsat-5C was developed for the Arab Satellite Communications Organization (Arabsat) to provide satellite capacity in both C-band and Ka-band frequencies for a wide range of communications services.Jointly produced by Europe's EADS Astrium and Thales Alenia Space, it will be positioned at 20 degree East orbital location to cover the Middle East and Africa.Manufactured by Orbital Sciences Corporation of the United States, SES-2 will join the fleet of European satellite telecommunications operator SES, and is to be positioned at 87 degree West for coverage over North America and the Caribbean.Both Arabsat-5C and SES-2 have life-spans as long as 15 years.This Ariane 5 dual-passenger mission was postponed from Tuesday due to local strikes of French Guiana workers.Founded in 1980 as the world's first launch service and solutions company, Arianespace planned to achieve six Ariane 5 missions through 2011. BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The provinces of Guizhou and Hunan reported their lowest levels of precipitation since 1951 in July, the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said on Monday.Precipitation levels across the country saw a decrease of 8.7 percent from the average level of 115.9 mm in July, the lowest levels seen in 11 years, said Chen Zhenlin, an expert with the CMA.The average temperature recorded across the country in July was 22.1 degrees Celsius, up 0.7 degrees Celsius from the average level.
