BEIJING, Mar. 1 -- Mrs Zhang is very much looking forward to the opening of Beijing's new Line 10 metro route.    On Friday, the 72-year-old was buffeted and bashed as she tried to get on a bus at Guomao, where she had been visiting her son at his office.     She wanted to get to Shuangjing, she said, but the crowds were so big and boisterous, she kept getting pushed to the back of the queue.     However, she knows that when the new Line 10 opens, her journey will be a lot less stressful.     "I really wish I could take the subway. It's faster and less painful," she said, doing her best to avoid the crowds and passing buses.     Scheduled to open in June, Line 10 will provide a high-speed link for commuters - and their elderly relatives - between Bagou in the west and Jinsong in the south.     On Friday afternoon, Zhou Zhengyu, deputy director of the Beijing municipal committee of communications, joined a group of journalists to try out the new route.     The 15.5-billion-yuan (2.18 billion U.S. dollars), 25-km line, along with two other routes linking the airport and the Olympic Green, will open in June, once testing has been completed - just in time for the millions of Olympic visitors, he said.     "But we won't slow down our construction plans once the Games have finished," Zhou told China Daily inside one of the line's new carriages.     "In fact, we will accelerate our development plans to provide an even better service for the people of Beijing."     Since the opening of Line 5 in October, the number of passengers using the subway has risen by more than a third, he said.     By 2015, Beijing's metro will stretch more than 561 km and feature 420 stations, Zhou said.     The existing network spans 155 km and has 93 stations, with the cost to develop each additional kilometer averaging out at about 500 million yuan, Liu Hongtao, a senior official with the Beijing railway transportation construction corporation, said.     He told China Daily the massive infrastructure project was already progressing well.     "Three lines are close to completion, one is under construction, and ground has been broken at six others," he said.     "The total cost of all the extra lines will be something like 200 billion yuan by 2015," he said.     "The government's usual annual budget for public transport is about 1 billion yuan," Zhou, who will be in charge of public transport in Beijing for the next five years, said.     Wang Hailong, who has worked as a taxi driver in the capital for the past five years is not worried about the metro taking away his business.     "The new subway does us little harm," he said. "And it will certainly ease the pain of millions of people who now travel by bus."

GUANGZHOU: The Guangdong People's Procuratorate on Thursday called on the public to continue to help it identify and prosecute government officials found to be guilty of dereliction of duty. Figures show that of the 2,200 such cases reported by the public since 2005, 738 people in 678 cases were subsequently prosecuted. Of those, 65 were county-level officials, with five holding more senior positions. Since the beginning of 2006, the procuratorate has rewarded 23 people for providing information on such cases, Huang Liming, director of the anti-dereliction of duty division of the provincial procuratorate, said. Also on Thursday, the provincial disciplinary watchdog disclosed details of four its most serious cases. In one, two police officials in Huazhou, Guangdong, were charged with torturing to death Huang Weiqing in November 2002, who had earlier been arrested for being a grifter. A court heard how police officer Huang Weiguang, who had been drinking alcohol prior to interrogating the suspect, repeatedly beat the man about the head, chest, back and legs until he lost consciousness, in a bid to extract a confession. Huang Weiqing later died of his injuries on November 14. A second police officer, Li Hanyu, was found guilty of failing to intervene; he instead simply left the room. Almost 40 police officers from the station unanimously testified that the suspect had killed himself by hitting his head on a table while being questioned. However, the dead man's family continued to appeal to government departments for justice. The provincial procuratorate eventually set up a special team and after a two-month investigation reached its decision on the police officers involved. Huang was sentenced to life imprisonment, while Li got two years for dereliction of duty. A number of other police officers were also punished. In another case, Fu Zuoqing, the former president of the Qingyuan Intermediate People's Court, received 11 years' imprisonment for misuse of power, bribery and embezzlement.

Aerospace experts saved the country's first ever manned space mission as the spaceship faced a potentially lethal impact while flying through the communications blackout area before landing, the country's space authorities revealed yesterday.China became only the third country to put a man in space, after the former Soviet Union and the United States, when Yang Liwei orbited the Earth in 2003 in what was a resounding success for its space program.But Xinhua News Agency reported that this was almost not so, quoting the Xi'an Satellite Monitor and Control Center's report on the dangers the Shenzhou V rocket faced."Yang lost every means to communicate with the ground command and control headquarters as he entered the ( Earth atmosphere), which fell in the worst-case scenario prepared by the space mission team," Xinhua quoted Dong Deyi, head of the center, as saying.Communications go down when any spacecraft re-enters the Earth's atmosphere, but in Yang's case, "even radar could not capture any signal from the returning module", Dong was quoted as saying. "After the Shenzhou V came out of the blackout area, the echo signals from the spaceship were still volatile, which sufficiently threatened the safe landing of astronaut Yang."Mission control promptly ordered optical guiding and tracking instead of a communication-guided landing, Dong was quoted as saying."Aerospace technologists used cinetheodolites (optical trackers) on the ground to measure the spacecraft's position and record movements. Precise positioning of the spacecraft enabled officers to properly control the slow-down parachute, which was vital to a soft landing."But the landing was 9 km east of the planned site, Dong said.China began its clandestine manned space program in 1992. China's work safety agency denied claims that current coal shortage was due to the closure of small, illegal pits."China is not short of coal as the country turned out 2.53 billion tons last year, a rise of 8.2 percent year on year. Output could jump by 3.3. percent this year", said Huang Yi, spokesman for the State Administration of Work Safety (SAWS).The campaign against the illegal collieries is aimed at those without production permits working under risky conditions. The shut-down of 11,155 small coal mines in the past two years means the elimination of that number of potential pit tragedies, said Huang in an online interview with www.ce.cn on Friday.Among the suspended collieries, 7,000 to 8,000 have merged with larger mines. The output of small coal mines still account for one thirds of the national total, or near 900 million tons, the same share before the reshuffle, said the spokesman.The current coal supply strain is temporary and regional, according to Huang.The heavy snow that has fallen since mid-January, the worst in 50 years in much of China, has paralyzed transportation, frozen the power grid and caused serious economic losses. Up to 17 provinces experienced blackouts in the snow-hit areas.Coal mines nationwide are urged to beef up production to ensure power coal supply in the disaster-hit regions.The government has also ordered the railway system giving top priority to power coal transport.Power supply and coal reserves continued to resume in China. Reserves of coal for power generation increased 800,000 tonnes to 25.2 million tonnes on Thursday, equaling 13 days' supply for the country's power plants, said the Disaster Relief and Emergency Command Center under the State Council on Friday night.
