SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Eight San Diego County gyms have filed a lawsuit against state and county leaders over the public health orders due to the coronavirus pandemic.The gym owners say that restrictions on their business by California and the county have caused, "difficulty in satisfying their financial obligations, having been forced to lay off a significant number of employees" and they have "expended large sums of money in an effort to comply with Defendants’ vague orders."Gym owners say they have lost tens to hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some cases, retrofitting their businesses to be compliant with reopening measures.The Plaintiffs include Metroflex Gym in Oceanside, Ramona Fitness Center in Ramona, Boulevard Fitness in University Heights, Deadweight Strength in Grantville, Convoy Strength in Kearny Mesa, IB Fitness in Imperial Beach, and Being Fit in both Clairemont and Mira Mesa.The owners added that they have sought clarification of the orders and how they're enforced by law enforcement and the county, but have not received any clarification from officials.The lawsuit claims that public health orders labeling their businesses as nonessential without allowing them to challenge it, and mandatory closures, are not constitutional.Defendants include Gov. Gavin Newsom, all five San Diego County supervisors, and the mayors of each city where the gyms are located. Various local law enforcement and public health officials, including Wilma Wooten, Sheriff Bill Gore, and SDPD Chief David Nisleit, were also named. 1548

Daniel Dorado is testifying in his defense.Eight women have come forward saying Dorado drugged and sexually assaulted them over the course of a decade. The owner of the Voce del Mar restaurant in Birdrock faces 35 felony charges for allegedly raping women after drugging their drinks. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Federal agents have been added to the investigation of a Kearny Mesa fire that gutted an off-roading business early Thursday morning.About 25 agents with National Response Team (NRT) of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) out of Los Angeles were requested by San Diego Fire-Rescue to assist with the probe.The NRT agents will arrive Friday and begin processing the scene at Off Road Warehouse Saturday, according to the ATF. They join other officials with ATF Los Angeles, SDFD, and the San Diego Police in the investigation. The fire comes five months after another fire ignited in November 2018. That fire, however, was reportedly ruled as an electrical fire.“ATF is committed to working alongside state and local law enforcement by bringing its resources to determine the origin and cause of this fire that resulted in a total loss for this business,” said Carlos Canino, the special agent in charge of ATF Los Angeles Field Division. “ATF will provide whatever is necessary to thoroughly investigate and provide answers.”Thursday's blaze was reported at about 1:30 a.m. at the ORW building (7915 Balboa Ave.) The fire caused an estimated .5 million in damages and the warehouse's contents were deemed a total loss. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Families across the San Diego region are continuing to battle record high home prices and rents.But there are now several plans in the works to boost supply - and hopefully bring prices down."There's no magic bullet, no magic wand," said Rick Gentry, who heads the San Diego Housing Commission. "I don't see there's one solution. There are a host of solutions that we can bring to bear that over time will reduce the problem."Jimmy Ayala, who heads Pardee Homes of San Diego, says the biggest change that could lower prices is reducing the time it takes to get permits. He says builders can work impact fees into their budgets, but over-regulation and delays from community opposition adds costs to projects that cause some developers to shy away.FULL COVERAGE: Making It in San Diego"If you start on this day and perhaps you end on a more certain date, then more people would enter the industry, more people would enter the market, we'd eventually get more homes," Ayala said, noting that Pardee's 415-home master plan community in Santee called Weston took 10 years for approvals.Local and state governments appear to be on board. The city of San Diego is now offering density bonuses and streamlined review for some projects. It also is encouraging builders add more, smaller units in the same building, with less parking requirements. The county is exploring other options to reduce hurdles to development.That, however, is adding to some San Diego neighborhood group concerns about overdevelopment."My group and my associates just want to see it remain a nice place to live," said Tom Mullaney, who heads Uptown United. "We think we can do that with lots of new development and lots of new housing, but we can't do it if our city government is going to throw out the rule book."Additionally, the San Diego Housing Commission is now able to help finance apartment projects with units for middle income earners, according to a new state law."The challenge for us is how do we develop lower than market rate product for this new customer base without taking away from the customer base that we've traditionally served," Gentry said, noting turnover has dropped drastically at its 3,400 affordable apartments in San Diego.Mark Goldman, a real estate lecturer at San Diego State University, said it would take decades to really balance out supply and demand. But he said any assurances could ease risk for developers who may not want to get involved."You don't know when you're going to get that potential profit dollar," he said.
