SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The Friar Faithful won’t be able to attend games in Texas to cheer on their San Diego Padres, but fans can support the squad in this week’s National League Division Series games at Petco Park while in their cars.The Padres’ drive-in watch events will take place at Petco Park’s Tailgate Lot at 1301 K Street.The first game of the best-of-five series against the NL West rival Los Angeles Dodgers is set for Tuesday, Oct. 6. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the series will be played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.Games will be shown on three separate large LED video screens, and fans who attend are encouraged to decorate their vehicles and don brown and gold in support of the team.Part of the drive-in experience includes dining options for four, a reusable bag with four rally towels, a car flag, and four hats.The team is reminding those who attend that health and safety measures will be in place, such as guests remaining in their vehicles unless they are visiting a retailer onsite or using a restroom.Face masks are required for all fans; the team says all staff members at the event will be wearing masks and conducting routine cleaning.There will be 20 feet of space between vehicles to promote more social distancing.Jaclyn Lash, the Padres’ Vice President of Special Events, said, “We’re still in a pandemic, we did everything we did that people stayed in their car or wore a mask. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The floral tributes shut down by the pandemic, blossomed into reality Memorial Day at several national cemeteries.Susan Williams first met Gregory Torres in 1973 while he was in the Air Force navigator training program. While the relationship didn't last, she never forgot him."Funny, smart and dedicated. One of the best people I've ever known," said Williams, 71.In 1978, while stationed in Germany, Captain Torres died when his plane crashed during a training flight. He was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery.Williams, who lives in South Carolina, had plans to visit his grave this Memorial Day before the pandemic hit.Covid-19 also turned the usual local services virtual. The flags laid out by the cemetery and flowers put out by a national nonprofit wouldn't happen this year."It made me feel crummy. He should be remembered in some way," said Williams.Enter Jenelle Brinneman, a Valley Center florist who started a Gofundme campaign. After a 10news story, the campaign took off. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The City of San Diego said Friday Lime Bike, Bird, Skip Scooters and Lyft had violated its terms of operation in regards to geofencing and other scooter operating restrictions. Geofencing forces riders to slow down to 8 miles per hour in busy areas “like Balboa Park and our boardwalks,” San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer wrote on Twitter. Bird had violations in nine different San Diego locations on July 13 and 14. Lyft and Lime Bike had violations in seven areas during that time, city officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The City of San Diego declared Thursday, August 6, as "Officer Jonathan Wiese Day."Wiese was the San Diego police officer who saved two-year-old twin girls after their father drove off Sunset Cliffs in June. The officer also saved the girls' father from the water.On Thursday, a proclamation was read and presented during a virtual Rancho Bernardo Community Council meeting.Wiese said he didn't rescue the girls for recognition, but said it was nice to see community support.The rescue happened early in the morning on June 13. Wiese, a K-9 officer, rappelled off a cliff using his 100-foot long dog leash to help.Wiese told 10News he is actually scared of heights and was thankful that it was dark the morning of the rescue.He joked that his wife told him he wouldn't have to wash the dishes on his day and that he hoped he'd get a free cup of coffee.Wiese was also the officer that helped take the suspected Poway Synagogue shooter into custody in April 2019. 989

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The escalation in Iran is stirring up terrifying memories for the family of a San Diego man, held there for more than a year during one of the most intense hostage standoffs in history."I was trying to get information. All I had heard from the State Department was that the embassy had been overrun," said Dotty Morefield, whose husband, Richard, was one of 52 people taken hostage in Iran in November 1979. "I picked up the phone and thought if anyone was going to know it would be the news agency, and Brad picked up."It's been more than 40 years since Morefield picked up the phone and called 10News for the first time. 10News assignment editor Brad McLellan picked up the phone."Mrs. Morefield told me her husband had just been taken hostage in Iran and I was shocked. I didn't know what to say," McLellan recalls. "I have to face the fears. The uncertainties and the worries. It kept me very busy and it kept me informed."Day in and day out, Morefield made sure the hostages were kept in the spotlight. Finally after 444 days, the hostages were released."I was just I was beyond excited," Morefield said. And here, Morefield and her kids — and a sea of supporters — celebrated her husband's return."He was stunned," Morefield said. "There were people from Lindbergh Field to the townhouse I was renting in Tierrasanta.
