SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The University of California Board of Regents announced Wednesday that it will ease admissions requirements for students applying to its nine campuses, including UC San Diego, during the coronavirus pandemic. The board voted Tuesday to suspend using SAT scores and letter grade requirements for A-G courses completed within the 2020 school year for all students who apply."We want to help alleviate the tremendous disruption and anxiety that is already overwhelming prospective students due to COVID-19," said John Perez, chair of the UC Board of Regents. "By removing artificial barriers and decreasing stressors ... for this unprecedented moment in time, we hope there will be less worry for our future students."RELATED: San Diego Unified School District to begin online instruction in AprilAdditionally, the Board of Regents suspended standardized test requirements for students applying for fall 2021 freshman admission. For transfer students, the cap on the number of transferable units with pass/no pass grading applied toward the minimum 60 semester/90 quarter units required for junior standing will be temporarily suspended."The COVID-19 outbreak is a disaster of historic proportions disrupting every aspect of our lives, including education for high school students, among others," said UC President Janet Napolitano, who endorsed the changes. "The university's flexibility at this crucial time will ensure prospective students aiming for UC get a full and fair shot, no matter their current challenges."RELATED: San Diego County school districts providing free meals to students amid closuresThe nonprofit College Board, which administers Advanced Placement testing, recently announced changes to its testing system, but the board said UC will honor credit for 2020 AP exams completed with scores of 3, 4 or 5, consistent with previous years.Students will not be punished for missing transcript deadlines during this time.Final transcripts are due by July 1, but if schools are unable or unsure about their ability to issue transcripts by that date, they may notify the UC at AskUC@ucop.edu with a date of when they may be available.More information on the changes can be found at https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/response-covid-19.html. 2286

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2015 trip Duncan Hunter and his family reportedly took to Italy was a personal vacation unrelated to his work as a member of Congress, according to new court documents. The documents state that Hunter proposed and then canceled a visit to a base in or around Naples, Italy “in conjunction with the hunter family vacation.”According to the documents, “Hunter’s primary motive in attempting to schedule the November 2015 visit to a base was to generate a pretextual purpose so that he could misrepresent his personal use of campaign funds for the family vacation.” RELATED: Federal judge denies Rep. Duncan Hunter's request to dismiss case, change trial venueThe court documents are dated Tuesday and come one day after a federal judge Monday denied Rep. Hunter’s request to dismiss a 60-count indictment that accuses the Congressman of misusing campaign funds. Hunter is accused of spending the funds on personal expenses, including family trips. In June, Hunter’s wife, Margaret Hunter, changed her plea to guilty in a plea deal with the federal government. RELATED: Wife of Rep. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A fourth suspect has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 44-year-old in Bay Terraces back in June.San Diego Police say 27-year-old Leaoaisemativa Sandoval was arrested on Dec. 19 and charged with the murder of Sean Nixon. Prosecutors say on June 6, Nixon was strangled with a strap from a marijuana grow tent inside a home on Freed Manor Lane.SDPD officers have also arrested Glenn Montano, Alfredo Sales Montano Jr., and Joshua Barnum. All were booked into County Jail for murder. The District Attorney’s Office says that Glen Montano wrapped the strap around the victim’s neck, while Alfredo Montano struck Nixon multiple times and kicked him while he was being strangled. Two of the suspects, who are brothers, were allegedly running an illegal gambling den and cannabis grow operation at the home. 840

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A beloved Poway tradition is facing accusations of animal cruelty and breaking the law.A lawsuit filed this week claims horses were illegally shocked in the 2018 Poway Rodeo to cause them to buck wildly for crowds. Two animal activist groups filed the suit; Showing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) and Animal Protection and Rescue League (APRL).Investigators with SHARK captured video during the 2018 Poway Rodeo, which they say proves an illegal device was used. The video appears to show someone with the rodeo shocking a horse in the holding chute just before releasing them into the rodeo arena.California law outlaws an electric prod or similar device from being used on any animal once the animal is in the holding chute, unless necessary to protect the participants and spectators of the rodeo. The plaintiffs are seeking a temporary restraining order before September's rodeo in hopes to get a court order preventing these devices from used. The animal groups notified the San Diego Humane Society of the alleged abuse, but humane law officers say they got the complaint too late to do a proper investigation. The Humane Society tells 10News their officers will have a heightened presence in this year's September rodeo.10News reached out to the Poway Rodeo for comment and received this response: 1335

The two other family members were asleep in the house so small "you can hear someone breathing in the next room," the woman testified.During the alleged assault, the woman said she asked Elkins what would happen if she cried out for help. "He said, ‘I would kill you,"' the woman testified. After the incident, the woman said she found another family member in the house and they called police. At a hospital, the alleged victim's blood-alcohol level was determined to be .09 percent, according to witness testimony.Besides forcible rape, Elkins is charged with rape of an intoxicated person, forcible digital penetration, two counts each of forcible oral copulation and oral copulation of an intoxicated person, forcible sexual penetration and sexual penetration of an intoxicated person.Elkins -- a seven-year veteran of the Yuma Police Department who later resigned -- faces 14 years in prison if convicted, according to Deputy District Attorney Lisa Fox. 1834
