EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- El Cajon city leaders will consider the possibility of a ban on the sale of vaping products at their next meeting in November. Tuesday evening, city council leaders heard from dozens of people for and against the idea; but the issue was not on the agenda.Councilman Gary Kendrick first brought up a city-wide ban in July. Tuesday afternoon, he was joined by school leaders, doctors, health officials, and parents who all believe vaping is an epidemic targeting kids. "These people who are selling vaping devices and vaping liquids to our children are profiting from the suffering of our children," said councilman Kendrick. A member of the Cajon Valley Union School Board said vaping is rampant in children as young as elementary age. "The liquids that are being used our being promoted to our youth , having vaping devices available at a very low cost in our liquor stores or 7/11/'s for approximately a dollar is promoting to our children that they can easily have access to them," said Jill Barto. Joey Johnson works at United Smoke Shop and Vape. He says if it weren't for vaping, he'd still be smoking two packs a day. "It's astonishing how much it’s truly helped me," said Johnson. Johnson believes a ban punishes legitimate businesses and will only create a bigger black market. "Gas stations places like that don’t care, so it’s either that or people on the streets or getting THC cartridges from people on the street who don’t know what they’re doing , they’re adding stuff to it to make it “vapable” or able to smoke and that’s the people that are dying," said Johnson. At least twenty-three people across the country have died from vaping related illnesses. In San Diego County, there have been no deaths, but at least twenty-two people have been sickened. One high school student told the council that vaping is rampant in the school bathrooms."The athletic kids vape, the honors kids vape, the college prep kids vape and their parents vape and at this point, it's sad to say, I think it's become a part of high school culture," said the student. Deborah Kelly told city leaders she was outraged at the failure of government to protect children. "Flavored tobacco products taste like candy, but act as poisons and kids don't smoke marijuana, they vape it," said Kelly. The council decided more research is needed before it takes any action on a possible ban. City leaders did vote to increase suspensions and fines for businesses that sell tobacco products to minors. Under the new rules, fines start at ,500 instead of ,000. If a business has a fourth violation within a five-year period, the retailer is subject to a permanent suspension. 2692

Dr. Jill Biden is making history as the first first lady to have a full-time job in addition to her role in the White House.“I think this is an opportunity to bring the role of first lady into the 21st century,” Ohio University professor of history Katherine Jellison said.Jellison at Ohio University studies first ladies’ influence on gender ideology and how experiences of first ladies inform America's idea of U.S. family life.“We have a first lady who’s living a life more like the average American woman," Jellison said. "Who in our society in the year 2020-2021 balances her family life and her work life."Biden is an English professor at Northern Virginia Community College. Even though the pandemic has brought new challenges to teaching, she says she will continue her full-time job as an educator while standing alongside her husband in the White House next year.“She has said on many occasions ‘being a teacher isn’t what I do, it’s who I am,'” Jellison said.Kim Churches is the CEO of American Association for University Women. AAUW is an organization that works to advance gender equity for women and girls.“By seeing that Dr. Jill Biden is not only passionate about being a teacher, but really embraces it as part of her whole self, will really change the way that we think about women’s roles in all of society,” Churches said.Churches says Dr. Jill Biden is serving as a prime role model for young girls who want to create and sustain change.“For 231 years, we have seen a first lady as stepping back behind the president – her husband – in all of these roles," Churches said. "But now we’re in a time when women make up half of the workforce, and by Dr. Biden really emulating and showing that a woman’s place is in the family, and the woman’s place can be in the workforce – and she can choose both – is really allowing women to see themselves and how they’re operating in their families today.”Traditionally, when the position of first lady developed, her role was described as the pinnacle of advanced home making. Much of her attention was put toward fashion and entertaining guests. For the past few decades, Jellison says there’s been less focus on appearance, and more focus on substance like the professional strides she takes and her influence on politics.“Someone like an Eleanor Roosevelt, a Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama have been real players in terms of advising their husbands on policies and also being major players in their own right," Jellison said. "Going out and championing important causes.”Considering Dr. Biden is an educator and a mother, Churches says she’s optimistic about her time in office.“I really hope that as Dr. Biden embarks on working and on her bold agenda as first lady, that we can also begin to center the incredible need for care giving and valuing caregiving in our nation," Churches said, "Flexible work schedules – look, women make up half the labor force, but many of them are having to choose between family or paychecks right now because of all the uncertainties the COVID pandemic has laid bare.”Whether working a full-time job or not, both Jellison and Churches say they would like to see first ladies in the future given more freedom to be themselves. 3230

Mike Parson said in a radio interview on Friday that he still supports reopening schools in the fall despite the fact that he knows children will contract the novel coronavirus when they return to the classroom.Parson made the comments in a radio interview with Marc Cox, a talk show host on 97.1 FM in St. Louis. Cox asked Parson to respond to local politicians that he felt were "overreacting" to the pandemic, particularly when it came to youth sports."These kids have got to get back to school, they're at the lower risk possible," Parson said. "And if they do get COVID-19, which they will, and they will when they go to school, they're not going to the hospitals. They're not going to sit in doctor's offices. However, children are still able to spread the virus to friends and family members.And while children are often spared from the most serious cases of COVID-19, the CDC reports that the virus has sent dozens of children to the hospital. Currently, the agency's COVID-19 Associated Hospitalization Surveillance Network currently reports that for every 200,000 children aged 5-17, about 1 is sent to the hospital every week. The network doesn't monitor hospitals in Missouri, but if those statistics hold true, between four and five public school students in pre-K through high school would be hospitalized in the state each week. According to Education Week, there are more than 900,000 students in the state.Parson also did not mention teachers, administrators and other school staff members, all of whom could catch the virus from children or other adults in the school.Parson also argued that keeping students out of school could cause more issues than if students were to come back to class."The risk of not putting them back in school — I guarantee it will cause more problems than the virus than we'll ever think creates long-term for our state," Parson said.Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, has said that he feels schools outside of virus hot sports should try and reopen for that very reason. In addition to furthering children's' social and cognitive development, with schools open, more kids will have access to nutritious meals as well as mental and physical health evaluations. However, Fauci has said schools in areas where the virus is rampant need to be careful."We should try as best as possible to keep kids in school," Fauci said. Dozens of people are gathering outside of the TCF Center in Downtown Detroit, trying to get inside to challenge votes which are being counted.People outside of the center say they are not being let in to challenge the votes. The Detroit Health Department said TCF Center is at capacity and that's what police are enforcing.Republicans are hoping to challenge the vote and claimed they were unfairly being kept outside where the absentee ballots are being counted.
