SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Tens of thousands of jobs are on the line as Congress struggles to save the airline industry, but a new bill announced Friday is giving some aviation workers hope.For Dante Harris, it’s more than a job.“It's a career that I would never want to exchange for any other,” said Harris.In his 21 years as a flight attendant with United Airlines, he’s traveled to every corner of the world. Now, he’s among the tens of thousands laid off after Congress failed to pass a stimulus bill this weekHarris is the president of the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA Council 12 union stationed at LAX, which also serves San Diego and Seattle members.He says about 2,500 United Airlines workers on the west coast lost their income and health care.It comes as an incredibly hard blow for the first responders of the sky who already faced countless challenges due to COVID-19.“We provide service to make sure that doctors and nurses get to where they need to go, to make sure that Americans are safe,” said Harris.On Friday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said if a bipartisan agreement is not reached, she’ll push for a standalone bill to extend payroll protections for airline workers for another six months.Harris is calling on Washington to extend that crucial funding so airline workers can get their wings back.“We need that bridge to get us to the point where we can bounce back,” said Harris. “And we can fly America to all corners of the earth again.” 1468
SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The County of San Diego filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the heads of Homeland Security, Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, calling for the reinstatement of the “Safe Release” program and reimbursement for the cost of treating a recent influx of asylum seekers. Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director Ronald D. Vitiello, Immigrant and Customs Enforcement Executive Associate Director Matthew T. Albence, Commissioner of Customs and Border Protection Kevin K. McAleenan, and Chief of Border Patrol Carla L. Provost are named in the lawsuit. The lawsuit claims the county has been harmed as a result of what it describes as a “sudden and unlawful change” in policy, releasing asylum-seeking migrants from federal detention into the county while “denying them previously-provided assistance in reaching their final destination(s) outside the County.” RELATED: Reaction: County of San Diego sues federal agency chiefs over asylum seeker careFrom 2009 to October 2018, ICE implemented a policy described in the lawsuit as “Safe Release”, which provided asylum seekers assistance in reaching final destinations outside San Diego, attorneys say. The aid came in the form of phone calls and transportation to other areas of the U.S. ICE officials said the policy ended last fall due to limited resources to support the program, according to the suit. The lawsuit claims some 40 asylum seekers and family members were dropped off at a San Diego bus station within 24 hours after the end of Safe Release. County attorneys say since then, as many as 80 parents and young children have been released into San Diego County each day. County attorneys wrote the vast majority of asylum seekers and family members must remain in the area without sufficient means to support themselves. Projected costs of the County’s assistance exceed .1 million as of Mar. 22, the county reports. County officials are calling for a judge to reinstate the Safe Release policy and rule that the change in federal government policy violated Administrative Procedure Act. The County of San Diego also wants a preliminary and permanent injunction requiring the defendants to resume providing asylum seekers and their family members assistance in reaching destinations outside the County. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The man who was convicted of driving drunk when he hit a Lyft car, killing the driver, was sentenced in court Thursday.Steven Quintero was sentenced to 16 years in prison following an emotional day in court in which three young women in the car at the time of the crash and the victim’s sister all gave statements. “The worst part of my story is that I remember every detail of the crash," said Kelly Hoffman with a shaky voice. "I am haunted by the memory of the violent, powerful impact and the sound of the bending metal and shattering glass," she added.A jury convicted Quintero of DUI causing injury, hit-and-run and driving on a suspended license in the crash that killed Henry Reyes along State Route 94 just east of downtown San Diego.RELATED: Driver who hit and killed Lyft driver in 2016 faces retrialThe crash happened on October 1, 2016. Reyes pulled over on the side of the road when one of the passengers inside the Lyft, Sarah Smith, got sick.When Reyes pulled over, he got out to help Smith out of the car and get her water. While walking around the front of the car to get back in, the Lyft was struck from behind, killing Reyes.Smith, Hoffman and Jessica Techel all suffered major injuries in the crash. “When I see photos of the car I am reminded that I’m lucky to be alive, have all my limbs and my mental capacity," Techel told the court.Reyes' sister brought photos of her brother to court. In one of them, he was with his 2-year-old son. Evette Rous testified how important her brother was to her and her family. He gave her away at her wedding, and was always around with a sarcastic comment for his sister. She said her life is forever changed. “When Steven Quintero made the decision to drink and drive, he not only killed my brother, he killed a part of each of us who lived Henry. He killed dreams, and memories yet to be made," she said.Rous said her mother didn't come to court because she felt there was no justice for Henry Reyes. The victims all testified they were disappointed when two different juries failed to convict Quintero of murder. In exchange for not trying Quintero a third time, he agreed to go to prison for 16 years, without the possibility of probation. Quintero also agreed not to appeal his case.Quintero did not address or even look at his victims as they spoke. His attorney told them he apologizes for his actions and is filled with remourse.Rous called the apology an insult.The 2016 crash wasn’t the first time Quintero was found to be driving under the influence. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The effort to establish a new independent police commission in the City of San Diego appears to be heading to victory.As of Wednesday afternoon, Measure B was leading with roughly 75% voting yes.There is currently a Community Review Board on Police Practices, but supporters of Measure B said that body is far from independent.“Their legal council is the city attorney, who represents both the Police Officers Association and the CRB so it represents a true conflict of interest,” Maresa Talbert with San Diegans for Justice told ABC 10News back in June.Proponents of the new Commission on Police Practices said they have been waiting for years for this to be a reality.“A lot of people will look at this and think, oh look, it happened overnight. Well, no,” said Martha Sullivan, one of the early members of Women Occupy San Diego. “It took nine years of very persistent [and] consistent, research, education, [and] lobbying.”One of the goals of Women Occupy San Diego ended up being police reform after the Occupy San Diego protests in 2011 and 2012. Sullivan said they submitted complaints to the review board at that time, but many of those complaints were lost.Since then, the push for an independent police commission grew. “This measure is the epitome of strength in numbers. It is the epitome of community support,” said Andrea St. Julian with San Diegans for Justice. She helped write the charter amendment that ultimately became Measure B.The Community Review Board will be dissolved and the new commission will be formed, once election results are certified. The commission will have independent counsel, subpoena power, and the ability to review officer misconduct and make recommendations.“They'll have greatly expanded powers, a lot more responsibility, and a lot more freedom to do the right thing,” St. Julian said.Jack Schaeffer, President of the San Diego Police Officers Association, said the POA took a neutral stance on Measure B.“We trusted the voters to decide on the type of oversight that they believe is necessary. We believe this election provided them an opportunity to do just that,” Schaeffer said in a statement to ABC 10News. “SDPOA will continue to support oversight in whatever form the community as a whole demands.” 2279
