SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just after President Donald Trump addressed the nation about border security, Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Barrio Logan held an event to recruit volunteers to help at asylum shelters. “The primary purpose was to let people know from a more personal perspective what’s taking place with the caravan,” said Father John Auther, pastor at Our Lady. The volunteers work with the San Diego Rapid Response Network to help the migrants who make it across the border.Several people who had volunteered in the past got up to speak about their experiences. “If I thought I was humble, it’s made me more humble. It’s rewarding,” said Martha Carriedo. She has volunteered for months at the shelter which is housed in an undisclosed location in San Diego. It serves as a temporary refuge for asylum seekers who have made it through the border legally but need help finding a way to meet with friends or family. Or if they don’t have any connections in the U.S., to find a sponsor or longer-term housing option while they wait for their asylum case to be heard. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – Just days into California's new stay-at-home order, many businesses say this time around they won’t comply with restrictions.Some restaurant owners tell ABC 10News they’re not doing it out of defiance, but as a way to survive.“We have to stand up for ourselves. We have to open or else we lose the risk of losing our business entirely,” said Annie Rammel, the owner of Oak + Elixir restaurant in Carlsbad.Rammel said she spent ,000 to have a deck built outside of Oak + Elixir on State Street to provide a safe dining option for patrons.It was going well until she had to shut things down once again this week as COVID-19 cases surged and the state put restrictions on in-person dining were put back in place.“Closed, open, closed, open,” she said. “A lot of us are not doing well; we’re not doing well, the take out and to-go we’re losing money on that.”Rammel and a group of small business owners in Carlsbad and Oceanside decided to reopen for in-person dining Friday and take their chances, including several restaurants in the Carlsbad Village.She said if she stayed closed, her 15 employees would be laid off during an already rough year.“It’s for our employees to put food on their tables; some of them have children that they have to provide for, the holidays are coming, and I’m just not going to do that,” she said.Her patio and additional outdoor sidewalk tables were ready for customers on Friday at 4 p.m. Rammel said she expected to seat approximately 100 customers.Just next door at Caldo Pomodoro, customers were seated outside for lunch Friday.“We’re basically fighting for our lives, and we’ve been here for 29 years, it’s a family-owned and operated restaurant, it’s not that we’re doing anything wrong, we just want to survive,” said Justin Davis, who works as a server at the restaurant. “If we shut down, we’re pretty much not going to open again. We did the plexiglass, redid our tables, and invested so much money into it, and we don’t see any reason why we should shut down again.”A Carlsbad Police spokesperson said officers respond to reports of businesses operating outside of the health orders, but the goal is to gain compliance through education.However, they said willful violations witnessed by officers will be reported to the county for documentation.“We’re scared to lose our ABC license, which is our liquor license,” said Rammel. “If that happens, the group of us is saying we’re going to push through, we have some attorneys on our side, and they say we have a really good fight because there is no evidence that these spikes are coming from us.” 2614

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- It’s now been a week since the first Americans began their quarantines at MCAS Miramar after evacuating from the epicenter of the coronavirus, and all Charles Wasserburger wants is one thing: a pizza.“I’m just eating the food they have here and suffering through all the pizza and burger commercials they have on TV,” he said.To be clear, the Nebraska native says he’s not complaining about conditions on the base where he has been on a mandatory 14-day quarantine since Feb. 5. The government has provided all 232 evacuees at Miramar with televisions and cell phones to call or video chat with loved ones, free of charge. Wasserburger works for a microbiology company. He was in Wuhan, China on business when the outbreak began. He hasn’t shown signs of the virus, but with two cases now confirmed among evacuees at Miramar, his wife in Omaha is a little worried on his behalf.“Even when you’re trying to keep a positive attitude, which he has done, there’s still going to be those days when you’re second guessing, “Could I be that person that comes down with that horrible thing next?” Fauniel Wasserburger said.The evacuees are allowed to mingle with each other in quarantine, although they’re supposed to stay six feet apart. San Diego International Airport was pretty empty Wednesday afternoon with no crowds or long lines and everyone was wearing masks.While it appeared to be smooth sailing for passengers, airline workers are faced with more of a challenge.“For United Airlines no one has been rehired for the holiday,” said Dante Harris. He’s a flight attendant of 21 years and President of the Association of Flight Attendants Southern California chapter. Harris was one of many hit by massive airline layoffs in October when stimulus money ran dry.“Industry-wide, more than 100,000 employees in the airline industry have been furloughed,” said Harris. “It has been absolutely a disaster.”While he’s not currently flying, some of his colleagues still are. Many of them faced with this problem:“Flight attendants are trying to enforce the mask policy, there are people who get belligerent, people who get non-compliant,” said Harris.Cases across the county are on the rise, yet Harris says some airlines are pushing towards getting back to normal.“Selling alcohol and serving food. We are fighting against that. that is not something we want to go back to right away.”The Auto Club estimates nearly 4 million Southern Californians will travel for Thanksgiving.
