You’ll need a DTI below 50% to qualify with most lenders, and lower is often better.If you don’t urgently need the loan, pay down debt before you apply, Ross says. Not only will lower outstanding balances reduce your DTI, they will also lower your credit utilization, which is the amount of your available credit you use and a main factor in your credit score calculation.Add a co-signer or collateralA quicker solution may be to choose a lender that allows you to add a co-signer. A willing friend or family member with good credit and strong income can help you get approved, says Thomas Rindahl, a CFP with TruWest Wealth Management Services in Arizona.Tread lightly with co-signed loans, he says, because the person you add to your application will be required to pay the loan if you can’t.Some lenders may also offer secured personal loans that require you to pledge something you own such as a vehicle or savings account, he says. Borrowers with fair or bad credit may have a better chance of qualifying and getting better rates with a secured loan, but the lender can seize the collateral if you don’t make your payments.Make a repayment planChoose a lender that reports your loan payments to the credit bureaus, as this can help you build credit, Ross says. This means the next time you borrow money or apply for a credit card, you could get a lower rate.But because lenders report both on-time and missed payments, your ability to make them will determine if your credit improves or worsens.Be prepared to ask questions about rates, terms and extra fees so you understand exactly what you’ll owe each month and when you’ll owe it, Ross says. Knowing that will help you make a plan to manage your payments.Even with a solid payment plan, you could end up late on one or two payments along the way. Since lenders don’t immediately report late payments to the credit bureaus, Ross says, make the payment as quickly as possible to avoid the hit to your credit.Compare lendersComparing offers from online lenders, banks and credit unions can help you find the best rate and features for your situation.Some online lenders offer personal loans specifically for borrowers with low credit scores. Look for reputable lenders that cap their annual percentage rates at 36%, which consumer advocates and financial experts say is the highest rate an affordable loan can have.Bad-credit borrowers will likely qualify for rates close to a reputable lender’s rate cap, but nowhere near the 300% or higher APRs that payday lenders offer.Online lenders may also let you pre-qualify with a soft credit check, allowing you to see what rate and loan amount you could get without hurting your credit score. Many banks and credit unions require borrowers to formally apply to see their offer, triggering a hard check that can cause a temporary dip in your score. A drug used to euthanize animals has been found in canned dog food, prompting a recall.Low levels of the drug pentobarbital were detected in cans of Gravy Train dog food produced by the J.M. Smucker Company, the FDA said in a statement Friday. Pentobarbital is most commonly used as a sedative, anesthetic or to euthanize animals, it said."Pets that eat pet food containing pentobarbital can experience drowsiness, dizziness, excitement, loss of balance, nausea, nystagmus (eyes moving back and forth in a jerky manner) and inability to stand. A California police officer shot during the Las Vegas mass shooting outside Mandalay Bay hotel and casino is at home with his family for the first time in months.Friends and family welcomed Ontario police officer Michael Garcia home yesterday. Both he and his fiance were wounded during the Oct. 1, 2017 shooting. At one point she jumped on top of him to shield him from gunfire after he'd been shot in the head.Thanks to her bravery and months of medical assistance, Michael Garcia survived. He's now trying to move forward with his life and regain some semblance of normalcy."It's everything, it's been a long road, so I'm just grateful for everything," said Garcia.Garcia can't work at the moment due to his extensive rehabilitation but that hasn't kept him from being upbeat. A Christmas display that's a little too life-like has led to some panicked calls to 911.Chris Heerlein of Austin, Texas, recreated the famous scene of Clark Griswold hanging from the roof in the 1989 movie "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation." For a week, a dummy has been hanging perilously from the side of his house, unable to reach a ladder that's fallen.The knock-off was a bit too good. Last week, a day after the installation, Alfred Norwood Jr. stopped his car, jumped out and ran to help the man hanging from the roof.The tense moment was captured on the Heerlein's Nest camera."Can you reach it? Can you reach it?" Norwood calls up to the man on the roof, as seen in the video. "Help!" he yells toward the street, turns away and runs back to call the police.When Heerlein found out what happened, he and his family tracked down the good Samaritan to let him know the dummy was fine and thanked him for his efforts."The thing was out there only one day, and Alfred was running to save this man's life. Alfred is a veteran and it was his instinct. He was the only one who jumped out and tried to help," Heerlein told CNN on Monday."He thought the guy might have been electrocuted by the lights ... but the dummy wasn't responding," Heerlein said.A police officer who came to the door after the mixup said police had received several calls about the Christmas display saying there was a man hanging from the roof.After the attempted Clark Griswold rescue, Heerlein said he put up a sign letting people know Griswold is fine."Clark G. is part of our Christmas display. Please don't call 911," reads the sign. "That so far has been sufficient," Heerlein said.The homeowner and the good Samaritan reunited on Monday, a week after the incident. Norwood was rewarded for his efforts.Norwood was the only person to stop and try to save the man, Heerlein said. Norwood served in the US Air Force and was assigned at the former Bergstrom Air Force Base, according to Heerlein."At the end of the day we were able to contact him and had him over to the house and thanked him for his service. And gave him a gift card," Heerlein said.Norwood is now subscribed to a chili of the month club. It's a fitting gift inspired by the movie: Griswold received a jelly of the month subscription as a Christmas bonus from his boss.When Heerlein first talked to the veteran on the phone, he asked if he needed anything. Norwood said he wanted to buy some groceries because he hardly had money to buy food. Heerlein gave him a 0 gift card for groceries when they met."Ultimately it's awesome that in this day and age there's a real quality human being out there," Heerlein said. "He's a hero in one sense. A Dundalk couple says they’re trying to figure out who’s responsible after a carnival accident on Friday.A day at a carnival for David Nagel, his wife Stacy, and their 2-year-old grandson was going great until David and Levi were on board the carnival’s merry-go-round.“I grabbed my grandson,” David said. “Ran away from the [the carousel] and got my grandson over the fence to my wife, and then I went back to make sure that everybody else was ok because there was a young lady with two younger kids behind me.”Part of the merry-go-round collapsed with close to 40 people on or nearby.Stacy watched in horror, capturing the entire incident on her smartphone.“It was his first time ever on a merry-go-round. He’s two. He never wanted to get on before and we didn’t push him. He just wanted to get on the merry-go-round so we had to film it. Thank gosh we did,” she said.Firefighters along with ride inspectors worked on the ride for almost an hour.Then the ride went back into service – not against protocol according to state inspectors.The ride services’ owner, Shaw & Sons Amusements, says the state handles inspections.“A major breakdown is a stoppage of operation from any cause that results in damage, failure, or breakage of a structural or stress bearing part of an amusement attraction,” Matt Helminiak, the Commissioner of Labor and Industry – over the amusement ride and safety inspection division, said.By phone, he said if no one was injured or if there weren’t a major breakdown, the state wouldn’t even be alerted.The incident on Friday wasn’t enough to shut the ride down.Still, Helminiak says the state will look at what went wrong with the merry-go-round.“In the case of a mobile ride, every time that ride is set up, a state inspector inspects it before anybody is allowed to ride it, but the operators themselves have a daily inspection requirement and so they inspect it and keep a log of inspections and then have that available for us,” he said.An unsettling feeling for David, who says he wants to see a change in the inspection process, no matter if someone is injured.“I went, number one, to bring back memories and number two – to share joy. It was supposed to be a joyous time. It was until we got on the merry-go-round,” David said.The state will look at the merry-go-round before it’s set up again.No matter the issue, it’s up to the company to get the ride fixed before anyone is able to get on it again. 2447
