A proposed state fund would pay rent for people on the brink of eviction to help them avoid homelessness.The 0 million fund is a key part of Gov. Gavin Newsom's budget proposal to address the state's homeless crisis. The fund, called the California Access to Housing and Services fund, could also be used to support the creation of more housing units and help stabilize board and care housing facilities. Newsom is proposing a .4 billion plan as part of his annual budget. Of that, 5 million would go to investments in Medi-Cal. The proposal also calls for the state using its own excess land for the site of new shelters. That includes open space near freeways, decommissioned hospitals and fairgrounds. The Del Mar Fairgrounds board has held preliminary discussions adding housing on the property. In San Diego County, excess property locations are also in downtown, El Cajon and Oceanside. An additional location deemed excess has instead been assigned to serve as a shelter for migrants seeking asylum. Jewish Family Service will operate the facility, and has requested the location not be disclosed due to security reasons. A Republican state lawmaker in Michigan has been removed from his committee assignments after saying he couldn't guarantee a safe day in the state capital on Monday as Michigan's electors gather to vote for Joe Biden.When asked if he could ensure that Monday's Electoral College vote could be held safely without any violence, Michigan Rep. Gary Eisen, R-St. Clair, said he couldn't."I don't know because what we're doing today is uncharted. It hasn't been done," Eisen told WPHM, a radio station in Port Huron, Michigan.During the 11-minute interview, Eisen didn't give details about what he thought could happen but said he was asked to help.In announcing discipline against Eisen, Michigan House Speaker Lee Chatfield and Speaker-elect Jason Wentworth — both of whom are Republicans — denounced calls for violence."We have been consistent in our position on issues of violence and intimidation in politics – it is never appropriate and never acceptable," their statement read.Chatfield and Wentworth also said that violence has no place in the democratic process and that Eisen has been removed from his committee assignments for the rest of the current term, which ends at the close of this month. A mother in Mesa, Arizona is voicing concern after her child's 4th-grade teacher changed words in the Declaration of Independence, and made the students recite the altered version in class.The teacher at Salk Elementary school crossed out the words "man" and substituted it with "human".The mother, Elizabeth Vaillencourt said the teacher's goal may have been to include women as well, but she went too far in altering a historical document.When Vaillencourt took this concern to school officials, she was initially told she had "hurt the teacher's feelings" by posting about it on social media.The school reacted by removing Vaillencourt's child from that teacher's classroom, and placing them under a different teacher.On Wednesday, Vaillencourt said the superintendent's office contacted her to tell her what the teacher did was against school policy.A Mesa Public Schools spokeswoman says they have policies in place when it comes to school ceremonies which includes reciting the Declaration of Independence. 1030

A Solon man was conned out of 0 earlier this month after a scammer told him he was holding his father hostage with a gun to his head.According to a Solon police report, the 22-year-old victim thought the scam was real because the caller knew his name.The scammer told the victim to go to the nearest Walmart and wire the money to a person in Puerto Rico or his father would be killed. The victim, who was in Pennsylvania at the time, drove to the nearest Walmart and sent the money as requested. He paid a total of 1.50 for the transaction, including the service fee.The victim told police the whole ordeal lasted around five hours. After he wired the money, the victim reached out to his father, who said he was not in any danger and had been at work.  787
