SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Several designated cool zones around San Diego County are open to help San Diegans stay cool amid extreme heat conditions.Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, public health and safety measures will be in place at each of the locations. According to county officials, all visitors and staff at the cool zones will be required to wear face coverings and practice social distancing. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego politicians are rallying for businesses affected by the county's move to the purple most restrictive tier.Coronado Mayor Richard Bailey said the purple tier is taking a toll, hurting businesses that can't withstand another months-long closure.He said it could make or break them and their employees, "many of their employees have been let go now their second or third time as of yesterday and it's really heartbreaking to hear their stories."Bailey said he voiced his concerns on Instagram after learning Public Health Officer Dr. Wilma Wooten filed an adjudication request that stated, "San Diego's increased cases are not due to the sectors impacted by moving into a more restrictive tier." The most recent information from the county shows work is the location with the highest transmission rate at 30%. Businesses like restaurants and gyms that are affected by the purple tier restrictions make up about 20% of exposures altogether."So if these businesses are not actually contributing to the spread of COVID based on information from the County Health Officer then why would we be shutting them down in the first place?" Bailey said.Coronavirus cases are higher than they've ever been, at 64,768 as of Sunday.“This is a stark reminder that COVID is real, is spreading and must be taken seriously. At this point, we are pleading with the public to take action to slow the spread: wear a mask, physically distance, and limit contact with those outside of your household,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chair, County of San Diego COVID-19 Subcommittee.The purple tier closures went into effect Saturday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University is celebrating yet another MVP athlete on one of sports' biggest stages.Wednesday, former SDSU baseball ace Stephen Strasburg was award the 2019 World Series MVP award after the Washington Nationals won Game 7 against the Houston Astros.As special an honor as that is, the award also means SDSU has two former players that have been named MVP in their respective sports — in the same season. In June, former Aztec star and then-Toronto Raptor Kawhi Leonard was named the NBA Finals MVP. The pair of postseason MVP awards in the same season are a first for the university. 625

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Symphony's new bayside concert venue is set to open just as San Diego's summer begins.Once completed in July 2020, Bayside Performance Park will be the first and only permanent waterfront venue on the west coast, according to the symphony's latest post online. Mikha rushed over and found the front door shattered. A look at surveillance video from nearby businesses reveals the culprits. Around 5:15 a.m., a black sedan pulls up and parks in front of the restaurant. Two people emerge. The lookout appears to be a woman, who covers her face. Minutes later, the other person makes a move.
