Class can teach you new skills, from auto service to belly dancing to music.Here are a few interesting non-credit classes to check out locally:Beginning Upholstery (MiraCosta College): Learn the craft of upholstery in this hands-on class focusing on basic fundamentals, techniques, and terminology of upholstery. Students will learn how to properly plan and complete an upholstery project, perfect for newbies or do-it-yourselfers. Students can even bring their own personal projects to class to work on as well.Beginning Ukulele (MiraCosta College): Pick up the "uke" in a beginner course, where students will learn the basics of ukulele tuning and skills.Beginning Belly Dance (San Diego Continuing Education): Learn the foundation skills to belly dance, including techniques, posture, shimmies, edulations, and traveling steps. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It could take more than three weeks for out-of-work Californians to get unemployment insurance payments.The California Employment Development Department (EDD) tells 10News, during normal circumstances, an Unemployment Insurance (UI) claim takes approximately 21 days from filing to payment.Right now, the circumstances in California are anything but normal.According to a report from the state's Legislative Analyst's Office, "Given the extraordinary number of applications received recently, as well as the expectation that claims will continue to increase over the coming weeks, the Legislature should anticipate that first benefit payments will take much longer than 21 days."The report states similar delays occurred in the Great Recession. EDD tells 10News they are currently experiencing a large increase in claims filed in their programs and have staff working overtime to keep up with the demand."Given the unprecedented increase in UI claims due to COVID-19, we have taken several steps — working around the clock, including Saturdays and Sundays, and redirecting hundreds of staff to process UI claims — to ensure every Californian gets benefits as timely as possible. We do not expect any significant delays at this time. Should the situation change, and delays arise, we will notify the Governor's office, stakeholders, and the public as soon as possible," an EDD spokesperson told 10News."We're seeing impacts higher than what we saw at the Great Recession," said Andrew Picard with the San Diego Workforce Partnership.This week the organization put out a report on potential impacts of COVID-19 on employment in San Diego County.The report stated, "In the first three days of partial closures (March 16-18), Californians submitted 190,000 unemployment insurance claims — more than quadruple the weekly average — and the March 19 statewide order to shelter in place will bring more layoffs."Between March 16 to 22, the Workforce Partnership received notices or phone calls from 52 employers that are considering or have executed layoffs or work-hour reductions for a total of 3,865 impacted workers. EDD said they encourage Californians to apply if they think they may qualify for benefits. Officials suggest using online services for faster processing, if possible. 2306

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds welcomed veterans home Sunday from their honor flight to the nation's capital where they visited war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and other landmarks.Sixty-four veterans from WWII and the Korean War flew out Friday. The Honor Flights are free for veterans. Each trip costs 0,000 and relies on donations.Joining the veterans are escorts who will spend the weekend supporting the veterans, guiding them and making sure everything goes smoothly.WATCH: Honor Flight San Diego celebrates life of WWII veteran who died on tripThe veterans include Purple Heart recipients, a former German Prisoner of War, a veteran who served on D-day, according to the non-profit. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In 2004, San Diego taxpayers approved a transportation tax increase that earmarked 0 million for bike projects for more bike lanes, safety features on the roads for cyclists and foot traffic, and new walking trails.Friday, SANDAG said it's going to need more. Officials said rising construction costs have called for an additional million for the projects, many of which have been started.The money would come from funds already allocated for these types of projects.RELATED: Compromise proposed for 30th Street bike lanes in North ParkCritics of the increase in funding argue only one percent of San Diegans use bikes and costs of .5 million per mile built for these bike lanes is unjustified.The San Diego Bike Coalition says the funding is needed to provide San Diegans with more transportation options, reduce auto dependency, and increase safety of bicyclists. They add that an expanded bike network will help the county move closer toward greenhouse emissions goals.SANDAG has been working toward the biking goals since 2013, when the agency approved a 0 million Bike Early Action Plan.
