SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person was killed and five people were injured after a crash near Scripps Ranch Sunday afternoon.The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Pomerado Road and Avenue of Nations near Thurgood Marshall Middle School.Police said an 18-year-old driver and one passenger in a gray BMW were heading home from a basketball tournament when they swerved into oncoming traffic.They crashed into a white Chevy with four people inside, all between the ages of 70 and 90.The driver of the Chevy sedan, a 90-year-old woman, died from her injuries, police said.At least five ambulances were requested at the scene, according to authorities.The cause of the crash is unknown at this time, but the driver told police he had mechanical trouble with his brakes. Alcohol and drugs are not considered a factor in the accident, police said.   917

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Police are investigating the murder of a man stabbed in the chest during a fight in San Diego's Southcrest neighborhood.San Diego Police homicide detectives were called to the 3400 block of Newton Avenue Wednesday just before 11:30 a.m., near Interstate 15 and just a block away from Emerson/Bandini Elementary School. Police said they found a man stabbed in the chest at least once, following a fight at a homeless encampment under I-15.The man died at UCSD Medical Center.Police said they have the suspect accused of the murder in custody after several homeless people who witnessed the fight helped police track the suspect down at a nearby park.Police have identified the victim but are not releasing his name. The suspect was only identified as a 30-year-old man by police. 865

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One man was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while leaving a flower shop in Rolando.The 68-year-old man was walking northbound in an intersection in the 7000 block of El Cajon Blvd. at about 12:30 p.m. when he was hit be a Honda Fit traveling eastbound, San Diego Police said. The man was taken to a nearby hospital and treated for life-threatening injuries.The driver remained at the scene. Police do not suspect alcohol to be a factor.Witnesses at the scene told 10News the man had just purchased flowers from someone nearby before being hit.SDPD's traffic division was investigating the incident. 643

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of La Jolla's most scenic spots is also the scene of a 20 year battle that has left the community divided.The Coastal Commission voted unanimously Thursday night to approve a measure to renew a 10-year permit to close the Children's Pool to human access during Harbor Seal Pupping season.The Children's Pool was built in 1931 to give kids a safe place to enjoy the beach.In the late 1990's, harbor seals moved in on the area creating conflict.Surveillance cameras captured visitors getting dangerously close to the seals causing the city to take action.In 2014, they decided to close the Children's Pool from December 15th through May 15th. This is typically the time period when mother seals use the beach to birth their calves.The California Coastal Commission agreed to try out this plan for five years.Dr. Jane Reldan, President of the Seal Conservancy, said the beach closure was an "elegant compromise." Reldan added that the closure happens during a time of year when it's cold and people don't want to go swimming anyways.Opponents say there's plenty of coastline for the seals to use and that it's time the Children's pool was given back to the kids. 1190

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Political analysts said Congressman Duncan Hunter's guilty plea and expected resignation would likely keep California's 50th congressional district Republican. "Mathematically, this is clearly by registration should be a Republican seat and Ammar Campa-Najjar possibly could get in the runoff if he's the only Democrat, so I do predict it will stay in Republican hands," said political analyst John Dadian.Dadian calls it a horse race with three high profile Republicans vying for the seat.RELATED: Rep. Dadian points to the recent resignation of Democratic Congresswoman Katie Hill as one potential scenario. "Her special election and the regular primary is on March 3. There are different rules on a special than a regular, so there might be, for her, four races within six months, that might happen with Duncan Hunter depending on when he resigns," said Dadian.Duncan did not bring up resignation after his court appearance Tuesday morning. 1953
