SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KGTV) — The California Medical Board is looking into a case where a San Diego doctor is accused of using dirty needles on pediatric patients. Newly released documents by the California Medical board states Dr. Bret Robert Gerber used dirty syringes on a 2-year-old and a 10-year-old in July 2016. At the time, Dr. Gerber worked at Scripps Coastal Medical Center in Hillcrest. The documents state a medical assistant reported seeing the doctor bring in two boxes of unauthorized needles from home. Upon closer review, she noticed that the syringes had expired in 2008, and the boxes contained dead insects and what looked to be rodent droppings. Three years before this alleged incident, Dr. Gerber was arrested by Mono County Sheriff's deputies for having psychedelic mushrooms, cocaine, and ecstasy. Deputies found the drugs inside his Winnebago during a traffic stop as the doctor was on his way to the Burning Man Festival. He later admitted to using ecstasy at the festival.Instead of court, Dr. Gerber went through a diversion program and the Medical Board put him on probation. However, in March 2018, documents showed Gerber violated his probation after failing to provide a bodily fluids sample for a drug test. Despite his prior offenses, Dr. Gerber’s medical license was never revoked. Dr. Gerber continues to practice pediatric medicine twice a week, most recently at Mid-City Community Clinic in City Heights. 10News contacted the California Medical Board for comment. SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) — Searchers are combing a section of the San Bernardino Mountains for signs of a missing off-duty firefighter. The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department says the search Saturday is focusing on an area of Highway 18 where Carlos Baltazar’s car was located by the California Highway Patrol on Sept. 20. Baltazar is a member of a U.S. Forest Service Interagency Hotshot Crew. He was reported missing by family members on Sept. 24. At the time, he was off duty and not in the area of the El Dorado Fire in the San Bernardino National Forest. Another hotshot, Charles Morton, died while fighting that fire on Sept. 17. 654

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A 29-year-old patron of seafood restaurant in Mira Mesa is grateful for his wallet Friday evening as it stopped a bullet fired from a passing vehicle.The shooting happened about 9:10 p.m. at the Crab Hut restaurant, 8280 Mira Mesa Blvd., according to Officer Robert Heims of the San Diego Police Department.Several rounds were fired and one of the bullets struck the man in the buttocks area, but his wallet stopped the bullet and he was not injured, Heims said.A description of the suspects or suspect vehicle was not immediately available. 567

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A City Council committee Wednesday unanimously directed the City Attorney's office to draft an emergency declaration over a lack of shelter space, which has exacerbated a deadly outbreak of hepatitis A among San Diego's homeless population.A declaration regarding shelters is already in place.
