SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Saturday marks the first day of the electric scooter and motorized device ban on San Diego's beach boardwalks. They include La Jolla Shores, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and the bayside walk area of Mission Bay.The ban comes after multiple reports of wipeouts, severe injuries, and even deaths. It was finalized by a 5-4 city council vote in December. For the first 30 days, San Diego Police will be issuing warnings. After that, they will be giving out citations. Despite being illegal, the scooters will be geo-fenced to 3 miles-per-hour on the boardwalks. This is slower than the average walking speed and the safest way to enforce the ban.10News met Felicia Minton and her mommy group, walking along the boardwalk in Mission Bay. She said she feels much safer since the ban went into effect. "Is it a good thing. I think people are naturally starting to understand that it's not the safest way of transportation," Minton said. Some people said it is not fair to be lumped in with e-scooter renters who are not good at what they do.We also met Will Brockett, who owns and rides a device called the "One-Wheel." It resembles a skateboard with one giant motorized wheel in the center of the board. "I just hit 1,300 miles on it," Brockett said. He is in a Facebook group of enthusiasts who go on group rides, mostly in Mission Bay, including the boardwalk. Before the council vote, his group submitted a petition to stop the ban, arguing that as responsible owners, they take care of their rides and prioritize safety. "You don't ride completely hammered after a Saturday night, on a dark street with no safety gear," Brockett said. California law defines a motorized scooter as a vehicle that has two wheels, handlebars, a floor-board that can be stood up while riding, and a motor. But the local prohibition includes ALL electric devices, including e-scooters, e-bikes, Segways, and one-wheels. "If somebody is acting with no regard for safety or pedestrians, that falls on the individual. Not on a whole group of individuals," Brockett said. He is hoping that the ban gets reversed. The prohibition excludes motorized devices for people with disabilities. 2188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scooter riders near the beach are checking their rides a little closer following reports of a group of vandals cutting the brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "That actually happened to me once in Key West. I had rented scooters and somebody had cut the gas line and we had to walk several miles,” said Jamie Gustine. It was a gas line then, but Jamie says now she’s forced to worry about cut brake lines when she rides. "My kids have ridden them, I have an 8 year old and a 12 year old who was riding the scooter as well, so that's where it scares me the most," she continued. Several people took to social media after the holiday weekend reporting a group of people cutting brake lines on Byrd scooters in Pacific Beach. "It's always something you're thinking about as a parent,” said Michael Cole. Michael Cole, thinking about it as he teaches his 7-year-old daughter to ride. "Somebody is eventually going to get hurt when you're doing something like that, especially down here by the beach, you grab a scooter, you're not thinking that someone cut the break lines."San Diego Police say you should contact the scooter company directly so they can remove the damaged scooters from the streets. The companies would have to file a vandalism report with police. 10News reached out to Byrd for comment, they sent us the following statement: 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Several San Diego events this week will resume as planned in the face of the county's increased precautions surrounding the coronavirus.County leaders cautioned the public Thursday to practice common-sense actions to protect themselves from not only coronavirus but the current flu season as well, as several large-scale events are set to headline the weekend. This week, other major events in the U.S. were outright canceled over coronavirus concerns, including South by Southwest spring festival in Austin and Miami's Calle Ocho and Ultra music festivals. Locally at Pechanga Arena, concerts featuring country music star Blake Shelton and rockers Tame Impala will bookend San Diego Sockers and Seals games, drawing thousands to the arena over the weekend.RELATED: San Diego County officials urge coronavirus preparednessIn a statement to 10News, Pechanga Arena said they are aware of the latest COVID-19 developments and will continue to follow CDC protocol."Pechanga Arena San Diego and parent company ASM Global are closely monitoring the latest developments regarding the Coronavirus (COVID-19) globally and any potential impact it may have on our day-to-day operations.
