SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man was stabbed in the hands and pistol whipped in North Park Saturday after refusing to carry drugs from Mexico into the United States, police said.The victim, 49, was pressured by six friends earlier in the day to transport drugs from Mexico across the border, but he refused, said Officer Tony Martinez of the San Diego Police Department.They saw him later at 3 a.m. Saturday in the 4000 block of 30th Street, Martinez said."They got into a confrontation with him, and during the confrontation the victim was stabbed in both hands and pistol whipped," the officer said.The victim received a laceration to both hands and a laceration to the top of the head from being pistol whipped, Martinez said.The main suspect was a man known to the victim, he said. The other suspects were three men and two women. They all fled in a white Kia SUV with Mexico plates.Mid City Division detectives will be handling the investigation. 950

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - California Sens. Kamala Harris and Dianne Feinstein introduced a Senate resolution Wednesday to condemn the deadly April 27 shooting at the Chabad of Poway synagogue. The resolution condemns anti-Semitism, white supremacy, white nationalism and other forms of hatred as antithetical to ``American values of dignity and respect for all people.'' It also expresses hope that the three injured survivors of the attack make a full and swift recovery and includes a call to honor the memory of Lori Gilbert Kaye, 60, who died at the scene of the shooting that occurred during a celebration of the end of the eight-day Jewish holiday of Passover. ``The rising threat of white nationalism and white supremacy is in direct contradiction with the highest ideals of our country, and I urge my colleagues to join me in supporting this resolution to condemn this despicable hate,'' Harris said. ``Hate has no place in our country,'' Feinstein said. ``Our resolution condemns the anti-Semitic attack on Congregation Chabad and reaffirms our nation's values of openness and tolerance so all Americans can worship freely without fear of violence.'' A similar Senate resolution condemning anti-Semitism was introduced last week by Sens. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and Tim Kaine, D-Virginia. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A UC San Diego epidemiologist was named today to Time magazine's 2018 list of the 50 most influential people in health care.Dr. Steffanie Strathdee, associate dean of global health sciences at UCSD's School of Medicine, was recognized for her successful efforts last year to keep her husband, psychiatry professor Tom Patterson, from dying due to a drug-resistant bacterial infection the World Health Organization classifies as the world's deadliest.Strathdee urged the team of scientists and doctors to use an experimental treatment for the infection using bacteriophages -- small viruses that act as parasites to bacteria by infecting and neutralizing them."It's a great honor to be recognized for my efforts to bring phage therapy into the 21st century in North America, but it all started with my single-minded desire to save my husband's life, and it truly reflects a team effort," Strathdee said.The magazine's list honors people who "have changed the state of healthcare in America this year, and bear watching for what they do next."Patterson was the first American patient with a systemic infection to receive bacteriophage treatment, according to Robert "Chip" Schooley, the lead doctor on Patterson's treatment team. UCSD Health doctors have since treated five more patients with bacteriophages. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- After two weeks under quarantine, 63 people initially evacuated from China amid the coronavirus outbreak were released from Marine Corps Air Station Miramar Thursday."When we in China we were afraid of the coronavirus," said Ti Fan who was released from quarantine with his wife and daughter. "When we came to America we feel safety and happy."Fan said he did not mind being quarantined and it gave him an opportunity to spend uninterrupted quality time with his family."You helped us overcome the fear of coronavirus.
