One person has died and 16 others have become ill from a salmonella outbreak linked to kosher chicken, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Wednesday.Eight people have been hospitalized, including the person who died.Illnesses were reported in Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania and Virginia. The death was reported in New York.According to the CDC, the agency began an outbreak investigation in June after several cases were reported in New York among people who said they had consumed kosher chicken."In interviews, ill people reported eating kosher chicken, and when asked about the specific brand eaten, several people reported Empire Kosher brand. The outbreak strain was also identified in samples of raw chicken collected from two facilities, including one facility that processes Empire Kosher brand chicken," the CDC said in its announcement.However, the agency is not telling consumers to avoid eating kosher chicken or Empire brand chicken. Rather, they should follow safe food preparation practices including washing hands before and after touching raw chicken and washing utensils, cutting boards and counters where raw chicken was prepared.Consumers should also cook chicken thoroughly, making sure the inside temperature reaches 165 degrees Fahrenheit. This is the temperature recommended to kill germs that cause illness such as salmonella.Salmonella illness usually begins between 12 and 72 hours after consuming the bacteria. Symptoms can include diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps and can last four to seven days.The earliest illness linked to this outbreak began September 25, and the most recent case began June 4.Severe illness may require hospitalization and treatment with antibiotics. Those most at risk for severe illness and complications are children younger than 5 and adults over 65, as well as people with compromised immune systems.The youngest patient in this outbreak is younger than 1 year old, and the oldest is 76.The US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service issued a public health alert "out of an abundance of caution," the agency said."FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers' freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged to properly handle, prepare, and cook these raw chicken products."The CDC and the USDA are working with state health officials on the investigation.Kosher food is prepared under supervision to ensure that the dietary laws followed by observant Jews are adhered to. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A 16-year-old girl told Oceanside Police a man, possibly homeless, tried to kidnap her Thursday morning as she walked to El Camino High School. The girl was walking east on Mesa Drive near Vanilla Way at 7:20 a.m. and passed the man heading the opposite direction. After she walked by, the man turned and grabbed her in a bear hug, police said. The man struggled with the girl, who was able to break free when he fell to the ground, according to investigators. The girl arrived at school and notified security about the incident. Oceanside Police units and a drone were deployed to find the man but were not successful. The girl described the man as dirty or "possibly homeless" according to police, white, in his 50s, 5’9 inches tall, and very thin. He was wearing a tan pullover sweatshirt with a zipper and baggy black jeans. Police said the man may be bald on top of his head with short light brown hair on the sides. OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A man died Thursday in an Oceanside home after a fistfight with a relative, police said.Officers were called to the home in the 600 block of Arthur Ave. at 7:17 a.m. because of an argument between two men in the front yard. When police arrived, they found Nestor Jurado, 37, not breathing. Jurado was pronounced dead at the scene."It appears he died as a result of the injuries he sustained during the fight," Lt. Kedrick Sadler said. Police arrested 35-year-old Joel Cardona and booked him into the Vista Detention Facility on a murder charge.Sadler said the reason for the fight is unknown and no weapons were found at the scene. Jurado's sister told 10News Cardona is their mother's cousin. 763

(KGTV) - An Oceanside family is grieving the loss of a 18-year-old honors student discovered dead from an overdose linked to fentanyl.For big sister, Jill, and dad, Duncan, it's hard to think of life without Brianna Moore."It's hard to talk about. She's my little sister," said a tearful Jill."We miss her so much. She had a bright future ... She was always so motivated," said Duncan.By the age of 14, Briana had run two marathons. She excelled at soccer and the violin. The honors student was accepted into a scholarship program at Stanford this summer but had to withdraw due to mental health issues, including depression.Amid the recent protests aimed at racial injustice, Brianna was called to action."She was inspired by the movement. She wanted her voice to be heard," said Jill.Her participation took her to Los Angeles."She started off with a good crowd that wanted to help people, and over time, she just met the wrong people," said Jill.Brianna was due back home Aug. 11 for orientation at Cal State San Marcos, but she never made it home.Inside a park in Echo Park, Los Angeles, a memorial marks the area where on Aug. 9, Brianna's body was discovered in a tent. The family says they were told by the medical examiner's office that Brianna died from an overdose: cocaine secretly laced with fentanyl.Earlier this month, law enforcement officials issued a warning about a large local spike in deaths linked to the synthetic opioid fentanyl. Experts say amid the COVID-19 pandemic, people may turn to substance abuse to deal with stress. Brianna's family suspects she recently began experimenting with drugs.
